Thank You for Coming to Fall Conferences!
Thank you to all those who took time out of your very busy schedules to meet with me during Fall Conferences. It is always such a pleasure to connect with you, celebrate your child’s growth, and discuss their progress so far this year. I truly value the partnership we share in supporting your child’s success.
If you ever have questions, concerns, or would just like to touch base about how your child is doing, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any time. I’m always happy to chat and work together to help your child continue to thrive!
Young AmeriTowne Field Trip – Coming Soon!
We’re so excited for our upcoming Young AmeriTowne field trip on Tuesday, October 8th! This hands-on experience is always a highlight of 5th grade, giving students the chance to apply what they’ve learned about economics, teamwork, and citizenship in a real-world setting.
- We’ll be leaving shortly after the bell rings, so please don’t be late! We’ll be gone all day.
- Please make sure your child brings a sack lunch labeled with their first and last name and a water bottle (label here would be good, as well.)
- No money is needed so please do not send your child with any!
To ensure your child can attend, please complete the field trip payment and permission slip through MySchoolBucks using the link below:

A huge thank you to our amazing PTO for awarding us a grant—thanks to their generosity, we were able to keep the field trip fees much lower for families!
📸 We’ll be taking lots of pictures throughout the day and can’t wait to share them with you!
For our volunteers chosen to attend the trip, more information will be coming soon!
Outdoor Ed and King Soopers!
Hello 5th Grade Families!
Just a reminder that 5th graders will be going to Outdoor Ed during the Spring of 2026! More details are to come with the trip but we want to make sure you are set up with the King Soopers Community Rewards now, which can be used towards your child’s Outdoor Ed costs.
What you need to do: Make sure your King Soopers card is raising money for Heritage PTO.
Here are steps to set this up:
1. Sign into your digital King Soopers account
2. Click on MY ACCOUNT and select COMMUNITY REWARDS on the left side of the page.
3. If it already shows Heritage Elementary School PTO, you are already signed up and no further action is needed. If you need to sign up, you can search for Heritage Elementary School PTO or use our code JP355. Make sure it shows exactly as written or it won't go to our school.
4. Shop as normal at King Soopers and watch the funds add up!
What to do later: Every quarter you can take a screenshot of your Community Rewards contribution. You can keep track of it yourself or send it to the email address: ptoheritage.outdoored@gmail.com.
You can also request King Soopers to send you your rewards for all of 2025 in a report. This is an easy way to get your totals and we will request this report (or the screen shots) next Spring.
This is a great way to raise money for our school and to help offset some of the Outdoor Ed costs for your family!
If you have any questions, please email ptoheritage.outdoored@gmail.com.
Thank you!
Heritage PTO
What We Are Learning
Reading
In our next Wonders unit, students will dive into nonfiction texts and learn how to identify and use text features—like headings, captions, and diagrams—to better understand what they read. We’ll also explore argumentative writing, focusing on how authors make a claim and support it with clear evidence and reasoning.
To make this unit meaningful and engaging, we’ll be reading an article that’s close to students’ hearts: “Are Electronic Devices Good for Us?” As we read, students will examine both sides of the argument, identify the author’s claim, and evaluate the strength of the evidence provided. This will help them think critically and form their own opinions based on facts!
Math
This week, we’re working on mastering multi-digit multiplication using the standard algorithm. Students are practicing solving larger problems accurately and efficiently while also building their reasoning skills. In addition, we’re focusing on Math Practice Standard 3 (MP.3)—learning how to explain their thinking, justify their answers, and critique the reasoning of others. Through word problems and error analysis activities, students will analyze different solution strategies and determine whether the reasoning is correct or needs revision.
Encourage your child to talk through their math thinking at home—explaining how they solved a problem is just as important as getting the right answer!
Writing
Our young writers are diving into the ocean’s energy cycle this week! Students are learning how producers, consumers, and decomposers each play an important role in moving energy through ocean ecosystems.
We’re using this fascinating science content to strengthen our informational writing skills — organizing essays into clear paragraphs for each group, weaving in science vocabulary from the text, and practicing how to explain why our evidence matters (a skill we call Detailed Examination).
Students are also exploring what makes a strong ending paragraph using the “Here’s What, So What, Now What” strategy. In addition, they’re learning to revise and edit their writing using a rubric as a guide and will even score their own work this week to reflect on their progress.
It’s been exciting to watch our writers grow as both scientists and authors!
Social Studies/Science
We’re continuing our Young AmeriTowne unit, where students are learning real-world skills like budgeting, saving, investing, and being responsible citizens. Last week, students participated in their job interviews, and they were absolutely amazing! Everyone came prepared, professional, and confident—our interviewers were so impressed!
Students have now received their job assignments and will spend the next couple of weeks preparing for their big day in AmeriTowne. They’ll practice using their checkbook registers, attend staff meetings, and learn more about their individual roles and responsibilities. It’s such an exciting opportunity for them to apply what they’ve learned about economics and teamwork in a hands-on, meaningful way!
