School Board: October meeting info

Hundreds of SBLSD students and staff participated in the 23rd Annual Beautify Bonney Lake event on Sept. 19.

Clubs, sports teams, leadership students, coaches, advisers, school board members and our superintendent rolled up their sleeves to pick weeds, spread bark and tidy up spaces.

Among the 24 cleanup sites, six of our schools got some attention: Tehaleh Heights, Emerald Hills and Victor Falls elementary schools, Mountain View and Lakeridge middle schools and Bonney Lake High School.

Big thanks for the community service of these groups: drama, robotics, JROTC, band, drill, dance, swim, AAPI, FFA, HOSA, golf, ASB, tennis, soccer, art club and more!

This fall, second- and fifth-grade students will take the CogAT Universal Screener, a cognitive abilities assessment that serves as the first step in the district’s Highly Capable (HiCap) identification process.

SBLSD’s HiCap Program provides services and learning opportunities that extend and enrich students’ educational experiences while supporting students with advanced academic abilities.

Specific testing dates vary by school. Classroom teachers will communicate testing dates and additional information to families.

SBLSD is offering a free vaccine clinic for all K-12 students on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 3:30–6:30 pm at Daffodil Valley Elementary, 1509 Valley Ave in Sumner. All vaccines are provided at no cost. Families can preregister online or walk in (with parent/guardian consent).

This is a great opportunity to ensure your student meets school immunization requirements, including the Tdap booster required prior to starting 7th grade. Current 6th graders are welcome to get their booster now and avoid the rush next summer.

For our youngest learners, kindness is a skill that can be taught, practiced and shared, and books are a great way to begin.

For the fifth consecutive year, every kindergarten student in the district received a free copy of

“How to Be Kind in Kindergarten.” The book is a collection of short, one-page poems that spans the entire year of kindergarten, offering tips on sharing, taking turns and making friends.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Trilogy Men’s Club, part of Tehaleh’s 55+ community, the Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation purchased books locally for our more than 640 kindergarten students.

We’re grateful for the donation and partnership in helping our littlest learners begin their school journey with kind hearts.

READY! for Kindergarten is a free program that helps ensure success in school for early learners, offering age-appropriate targets, training and tools for parents and caregivers of children birth to age five.

Families new to READY! must attend orientation from 6-6:30 pm before your registered class session.

Fall session dates:

Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Sumner Early Learning Center
Thursday, Oct. 22 at Donald Eismann Elementary
Monday, Oct. 26 at Emerald Hills Elementary

Time: All sessions are held from 6:30-8 pm

Register: www.readyforkindergarten.org/sumner

All fall sessions will be held in person. If you have more than one child, you need to attend more than one session.

The district’s 12-member Bond Oversight Committee met Sept. 21 to receive detailed updates on all nine bond construction projects.

Before the meeting, committee members toured Bonney Lake High School and viewed several temporary modifications supporting construction of the expansion project, including a temporary front office, classrooms in the library, a temporary mechanical room in a former copy room, and the temporary wall, nicknamed the “Big Beige Beast,” separating the school from expansion work.
