National Hispanic Heritage Month

The theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month in 2025 is "Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future". This theme, chosen by the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), celebrates the rich history and achievements of Hispanic and Latine communities while emphasizing their role in shaping the future

What the theme means:

Collective Heritage:

  • This highlights the shared cultural traditions, stories, and experiences that unite Hispanic and Latine communities.

Honoring the Past:

  • It recognizes and learns from the historical journeys, lasting achievements, and vital contributions of past generations.

Inspiring the Future:

  • The theme also focuses on the present and future, celebrating the unique voices and experiences of those who continue to pioneer change and guide the path forward for upcoming generations.

Notable Hispanic Figures

  • Cardinal Robert Prevost made history on May 8, 2025 with his selection as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church. Taking the name Leo XIV, the 69-year-old became the first pope from the United States and only the second from the Americas after Pope Francis.

Prevost was born in on September 14, 1955, in Chicago to parents Mildred Martínez, of Spanish descent, and Louis Marius Prevost, of Italian and French descent. After graduating from Villanova University with a mathematics degree in 1977, he was ordained a priest then relocated in 1985 to Peru. He spent more than a decade serving the church there. Leo has dual citizenship in Peru and the U.S. and is fluent in five languages, including Spanish and Portuguese. He was made a cardinal in 2023 and elected pope during the fourth vote of the conclave following Francis’ death this spring. Progressive on several social issues, Leo has been outspoken in his support of migrants, the poor, and climate change.
  • Julia Alvarez, 75, Dominican American writer has been enchanting readers with her words since the early 1990s. She was born in New York City in 1950 before her family moved to the Dominican Republic when she was a baby. They stayed there throughout Alvarez’s childhood until her father’s involvement in a failed attempt to overthrow the militant dictator forced the family to flee to the United States in 1960. The traumatic event has since made its way into several of Alvarez’s works, including the poem “Exile” in which she recounts the night her family fled. She has become one of the most critically revered Latina writers and has published poems, novels, and essays throughout her career.
  • Jenna Ortega, 22, is a Hispanic actor of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent who is widely known for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s wildly successful series Wednesday. She is only the third Latina leading actress to be nominated for an Emmy.

Born and raised in California, Ortega began acting from a young age and has since appeared in several TV shows and movies including Disney’s Stuck in the Middle and the rebooted Scream franchise. In 2024, she starred in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

10/22- Wednesday Wear Orange For Unity!

October is Bullying Prevention month! Please wear Orange on Wednesday, October 22 in support of Kindness, Acceptance and Inclusion!

What is Bullying?

Bullying is repeated, intentional behavior meant to harm, intimidate, or humiliate someone who has less power—whether physical, social, or emotional. It can take many forms, including physical, verbal, social, or online (cyberbullying). In contrast, not all unkind acts are bullying. A single argument, accidental harm, or friendly teasing between equals is not bullying, though it can still be hurtful and should be addressed. Unity Day, observed each October, is a time to come together against bullying by wearing orange to show kindness, acceptance, and inclusion—and to remind everyone that even small acts of respect help create a safe and supportive community for all.

So what is Unity Day?

"Unity Every Day": This complementary theme emphasizes that the principles of Unity Day—kindness, acceptance, and inclusion—should be practiced every day, not just on the designated day. Unity Day will be taking place on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the signature event encourages participants to wear and share the color orange to send a visible message against bullying.

Parking Lot Expectations!

Recently, there have been growing concerns about students driving recklessly and at unsafe speeds in the school parking lot. This behavior puts everyone at risk—drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and staff. The parking lot is a shared space where safety must come before convenience or showing off. Speeding, cutting through spaces, and driving on access roads are unacceptable and may result in a loss of parking privileges. All students are expected to drive responsibly, follow appropriate speed limits and remain aware of their surroundings at all times.

Student Video Contest!

My name is Franki Moscato (girl, 23, Oshkosh). I am “that Wisconsin girl” who won a Gold Ticket on ABC’s American Idol. Perhaps you’ve seen me sing the Anthem for the Packers (5), Bucks (7), NASCAR (1), or Whitehouse (2). I am writing to ask you for help communicating a project I am working on to fight teen suicide.

My story includes being bullied out of two schools and finding myself in a dark place. Today, I use my platform and my non-profit, Franki Moscato Foundation, to advocate for teen suicide prevention.

I am inviting Wisconsin students in grades 6-12 to make a 60-second video about being kind, anti-bullying, or somehow preventing teen suicide. See my contest here: http://BeKindContest.com

Video submissions are due by November 1st. We have to hurry! The winning video will be professionally produced and broadcast as a televised Public Service Announcement across Wisconsin. The kids and adults who worked on the project will be invited to be cast in the production spot, and the author’s parents will win a FunJet vacation to the Dominican Republic!

Just for Fun! Do You Know....?

...the air from a sneeze can travel at speeds of up to 100 mph! It’s involuntary. You can’t control when a sneeze happens, and you should never try to hold one in. When you sneeze, it removes irritants like dirt, dust and pollen from your nose or throat. It’s your body’s way of getting rid of things that can make you sick or cause inflammation.
