Advanced Coursework Notification - May 2025

Advanced Coursework Notification
Dear WSCSD Parent/Guardian,
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the benefits and opportunities for your child to participate in advanced coursework.
While advanced coursework provides an opportunity for your child to gain skills and demonstrate competencies at a higher level, advanced coursework provides other benefits as well. Other benefits of participation in advanced coursework may include:
improving a student’s self-confidence and image of self.
demonstrating a student’s preparedness for college-level coursework.
earning college credit(s) prior to graduation.
reducing future costs for higher education.
reducing the amount of time that the student must spend in secondary and/or post-secondary school.
The advanced courses offered in middle school are:
Enriched Math 6
Accelerated Math 7
Algebra 1 (Grade 8)
Earth Science (Grade 8)
Honors ELA 8
Honors Social Studies 8
The advanced courses offered in each high school are numerous and can be accessed in the HS Curriculum Handbooks on each school's website under their Student Services Department page. We have also linked them for you below as buttons.
To be eligible for these courses, students should have willingness to commit to the specific requirements of the course, have a strong work ethic, meet grade-specific or sequential prerequisites, and speak to their school counselor for more details.
The following supports are provided by your child’s school to help students succeed in advanced courses:
Academic Supports
After school remediation opportunities with teachers, provided resources associated with the class, e.g, review books, access to instructional software programs, etc.
Non-academic Supports
The Student Services Department is available to help support students as needed regarding enrollment in accelerated coursework.
If there are any associated costs with the advanced coursework, financial aid may be available to your child. The cost of any Advanced Placement (AP) examinations are covered by the District for all students enrolled. If your child(ren) is/are enrolled in a college course they are taking at their high school, there may be a reduced cost available to some students. Please reach out to your school counselor for additional details.
Questions related to your child’s participation in advanced coursework may be referred to your child(ren)’s school counselor or building principal.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lisa Krueger
Superintendent of Schools
