Happy Holidays from Ocean Academy...

Holiday Greetings! Thank you for your continued partnership. We wish the parents and students of Ocean Academy a very safe, healthy and happy Holiday Season and the very best for the New Year!

2020 will be a year we never forget. One of challenges we never expected, loss of cherished loved ones, and continued uncertainty of jobs, income, health, and safety. One thing is for certain. The OA family remained intact to support one another, dedicate ourselves to the value of education, and stand firm in hope and preparation for a brighter future. Teachers and administrators worked tirelessly to develop new, engaging methods to teach meaningful skills and content to students at a distance. Counselors and staff dedicated themselves to stay in close contact with students and families in need of extra support and guidance. Volunteers and the entire OA family raised money to continue funding education and sponsorships so that everyone could stay in school. And most importantly, Ocean Academy students have been resilient.

You have been truly living the theme you were always taught: Never give up. You have adapted to new ways of life; new ways of learning; new ways of supporting your families, neighbors, and classmates; and you have grown up in ways that none of the adults had to experience at your age. We have a lot of accomplishments to celebrate as this year closes and wisdom that we have gained that will give us strength for the rest of our lives.

A Message for OA Teachers & Staff

The Perfect Guidance
by Ludwin

You are like the gps on a boat.

If I was in the middle of the ocean you’d guide me to shore.

You are the sky because I look up to you.
You’re the star that shines and makes me bright.

The mistakes I make, you make them lessons.

The desires I have, you make them achievements.

The hope I carry, you evolve to confidence.

You make our present and create our future.

You are determined to make me who I want to be.

You ignite my life even though it had already begun.

Teacher Spotlight ~ Mr Javier Alegria

What book would you recommend to a student and why?

I would recommend hands down any series of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" for your age group or your selection to the current mood you are experiencing. These books offer a wide variety of themes and stories that I can bet will make you better understand the world around you, love reading, and relate to your daily life. As a teenager I hated reading and somewhat couldn't finish a book of my own and didn't see the importance of reading for mental stimulation. After gifted a copy of this book particularly the edition " Open the heart and rekindle the spirit", I spend my entire summer reading and analyzing the uniqueness of each story which got me hooked on these series. It reminded me that we can all make the world a better place starting from our positive actions, language, and thoughts. These stories can be read at any time of the day and are great table conservation starters with friends, family, and relatives. Therefore, I highly recommend any student to pick a copy they like a try the first 20 pages and share your stories. :)

What is your favorite quote?

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." is my favorite quote written by Winston Churchill.
This quote is my advice and my inspiration as I recall being a teen struggling academically and in life. It also recognizes that we should continue to keep standing brave and strong and not being afraid of failure but to learn and continuously improving on ourselves and improve our world.

Cross Curricular Courses @OA

Cross Curricular Courses provide a special opportunity for students to:

  1. "connect" learning from all of courses into one place,
  2. share the progress being made in independent enrichment courses,
  3. explore how all of this learning connects to personal passions and interest areas,
  4. investigate questions and ideas that matter to each student personally, and
  5. publicly exhibit best work in individual published Google sites.

New Year in Belize

Belize is the kind of place where there’s always a reason for a celebration from birthdays, to bachelor/bachelorette parties, anniversaries, weddings, or a vacation with family or friends there is always something happening and end of year celebrations are even more exciting.

Bringing in the New Year is one of the biggest celebrations in any country and Belize is no different. All over the country, which is a cultural and ethnic melting pot, people celebrate and bring in the New Year in traditional and non-traditional ways.

Most families bring in the New Year together counting down the clock while enjoying family dinners. New Year’s being an extended part of the end-of-year holiday season calls for delicious plates and while there are many to choose from, in Belize, turkey dinners and relleno are two of the favorites. In many cases the family prepares the food together as a bonding experience, passing tradition from one generation to the next.

During this time of the year huge pots of rice and beans, or relleno soup bubble on the stove and the succulent aroma fills the air.

New Year's Day in Belize is celebrated as a day of recreation throughout the country. Some people spend the day socializing with family and friends while others flock to the horse racing fields; one popular area for this is Burrel Boom. Another popular recreational activity is the Krem's New Year's Day Cycling Classic. This cycling race starts in Corozal and ends in Belize City.
