Sullivan Heights Huskies are CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS!
The Sullivan Heights Huskies defeated the Sullivan Central Cougars Thursday night to claim the Conference Football Championship!
All the hard work, determination, and teamwork paid off! We are so proud of our Huskies and the heart they showed on the field! CONGRATULATIONS, HUSKIES!
Ghost the Hate!
This week, Sullivan Heights Middle School was all about spreading kindness, building connections, and leaving bullying on READ!
In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, we were excited to welcome our community partners from United Way, Ballad Health, ETSU GEAR UP!, and other amazing organizations for our Ghost the Hate event! Together, we reminded our Huskies that a little kindness can go a long way and that everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and included.
ETSU GEAR UP! shared an important message about how building strong support systems and working as a team can help students overcome challenges and reach their future goals.
Our Huskies also had opportunities to:
- Sign an anti-bullying pledge
- Write positive affirmations for their peers
- Create positive messages through coloring activities
- Pick up bullying prevention swag, bracelets, buttons, ribbons, and stickers
- Connect with community partners and learn about available resources
A huge THANK YOU to our community partners for investing in our students and helping us build a culture where kindness, connection, and respect matter every day!

๐พ Back in the Kennel & Bringing Home the Hardware! ๐
Fall Break is officially behind us, and our Huskies have jumped right back into the swing of things! ๐๐พ We've kicked off the second nine weeks, settled into new Related Arts classes, and picked right back up where we left off in our classrooms.
But before we get to all that learning, we have some BIG Husky news to celebrate!
๐ CHAMPIONS! CHAMPIONS! CHAMPIONS! ๐
YOUR HUSKIES ARE CONFERENCE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS! ๐๐พ
Our Husky football team brought home the conference championship with a big win this week, and we couldn't be prouder! A huge congratulations to our players, coaches, and everyone who helped make this season such a success. The hard work, determination, teamwork, and Husky pride these athletes have shown throughout the season have certainly paid off!
Way to represent Sullivan Heights and show everyone what it means to RUN WITH THE PACK! ๐๐พ
๐ฌ Quarter 1 Grade Reports Are Here!
First nine weeks grade reports went home this week!
It's hard to believe we've already completed an entire quarter of school. Families, please take a few minutes to review your student's grades and celebrate their successes while also identifying any areas where they may need a little extra support.
The start of a new nine weeks is a great opportunity to set goals, build better habits, and make a fresh start. We're ready to make Quarter 2 even better!
๐ ELA: Curiosity Got the Best of Victor Frankenstein! โก
Our ELA Huskies are still plowing through Frankenstein, and let's just say Victor's curiosity has certainly created a few problems! ๐ Students are continuing to read closely and analyze the novel, examining Victor's decisions and the consequences that follow. They're exploring important themes such as ambition, responsibility, and what can happen when someone pushes the boundaries of what they believe is possible. As the story unfolds, students are looking beyond what happens to consider why characters make certain choices and how those choices affect others.
There's definitely plenty to discuss, and Victor is giving our students no shortage of material! โก๐
โ Math: We've Got the POWER! ๐ฅ
Our 8th Grade Math classes are working through Chapter 8 in Big Ideas Math, and it's all about exponents, powers, and the real number system! Students are building on their understanding of numbers as they explore rational and irrational numbers, roots, and the rules that make working with exponents possible. They're learning how to recognize patterns, simplify expressions, and make sense of numbers that might look a little intimidating at first glance.
And while exponents may make numbers grow quickly, we're making sure our understanding grows right along with them! ๐ข๐ง
๐ Algebra I: Another Chapter in the Books!
Mrs. Iddings' Algebra I students have officially wrapped up Chapter 3! ๐
Students have spent the chapter exploring functions and the different ways mathematical relationships can be represented through equations, tables, and graphs. With another chapter behind them, they're continuing to build the algebra skills and connections that will carry them through the rest of the course.
One chapter down, another mathematical adventure ahead! ๐โ๏ธ
๐ฌ Science: May the Forces Be With You! ๐งฒ๐
Our 8th grade scientists are continuing to investigate magnetic forces and how they connect to other forces, including gravity. Students are exploring how forces can act without objects even touching and comparing the ways different forces affect the world around us. From magnets attracting and repelling to Earth's gravitational pull, students are making connections between what they've learned in class and the forces they experience every single day.
Who knew there was so much invisible action happening all around us? ๐งฒ๐
๐บ๐ธ Social Studies: We Declare Independence!
Things have officially reached the breaking point in Social Studies! After exploring the growing tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain, our students are moving into the Declaration of Independence and the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Students are learning about the colonists' decision to break away from British rule, the ideas behind independence, and the events that launched the fight for a new nation.
They're discovering that declaring independence was one thingโbut winning it was an entirely different challenge! ๐บ๐ธ
๐พ Quarter 2: Let's Keep That Husky Momentum Going!
We're back from Fall Break, our football team is bringing home championship hardware, and our classrooms are buzzing with new learning! As we settle into the second nine weeks, we're continuing to encourage students to demonstrate our P.A.C.K. values: Persistent, Accountable, Courteous, and Knowledgeable.
Let's carry that championship-level effort into our classrooms and make Quarter 2 a great one!
๐ Family Connection
Need a few conversation starters for the weekend? Try these instead of the usual "What did you do at school today?" (We all know how that answer usually goes! ๐)
โก ELA: "What has Victor Frankenstein learned about the consequences of his curiosity?"
๐ข Math: "Can you explain what an exponent tells you to do?"
๐ Algebra I: "What is a function, and how can you show one using a graph or table?"
๐งฒ Science: "How are magnetic forces and gravity alike? How are they different?"
๐บ๐ธ Social Studies: "Why did the colonies decide to declare independence from Great Britain?"
๐ Husky Pride: "What was your favorite part of our championship football season?"
๐ฌ Quarter 2: "What's one goal you'd like to work toward this nine weeks?"
Here's to a great start to Quarter 2โand one more time for our CONFERENCE CHAMPION HUSKIES! ๐๐๐พ

Welcome back from Fall Break! We hope everyone had a restful and relaxing fall break, because we have hit the ground running for a massive week of learning, field trips, and championship-bound sports.
Here is a look at the major highlights from our first week back:
๐ผ 6th Grade Visits BizTown Our 6th-grade students traveled to the Bristol Motor Speedway to participate in Junior Achievementโs JA BizTown. After weeks of preparation, the 6th graders put their classroom lessons into practice by running their own micro-economy. From operating businesses and managing bank accounts to voting for officials and earning "paychecks," our students got a thrilling, hands-on taste of the professional world in a truly unique venue.
๐ Football Team Heads to the Championship! A massive congratulations goes out to our varsity football team for an incredible victory this week! Thanks to their hard work, teamwork, and determination on the field, they secured a thrilling win and are officially headed to the championship game. Be sure to come out, wear our school colors, and cheer on the team as they won the ultimate title; CHAMPIONS!
Math ๐:
Mrs. Sexton, Mrs. Hayes, & Mrs. Dye
Chapter 3 continues; our students focused on essential math skills this week by exploring ratios, ratio tables, and coordinate planes. Our math students have been working incredibly hard mastering the core building blocks of proportional reasoning! Over the last week, classrooms have been busy as students learned how to use ratios, equivalent ratios, tables, and graphs to break down and solve complex real-world problems
Here are the specific learning standards and skills we covered to help students visualize and solve real-world math problems:
6.RP.A.1: Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.
6.RP.A.3: Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
6.RP.A.3.a: Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
Coming up; next week we will discuss ways to find unit rates, use unit rates to solve rate problems, and use unit rates to compare rates.
ELA ๐:
Mrs. Doughtey, Mrs. Berry, Mr. Rumsey
Welcome to Unit 6B: Mysteries & Investigations! ๐๐
Dear Families,
Weโre excited to introduce our next unit in Grade 6 English Language Arts, Unit 6B: Mysteries & Investigations! Over the coming weeks, our students will step into the role of literary and scientific detectives as they "read like investigators" across multiple engaging genres.
๐ต๏ธ What We're Learning
In this unit, students will build critical reading, writing, and analytical skills through two fascinating focal topics:
Medical Sleuthing & Scientific Discovery:
Core Text: The Secret of the Yellow Death: A True Story of Medical Sleuthing by Suzanne Jurmain.
What Students Do: Students will analyze how scientists used observation, hypotheses, and evidence to unravel the mystery of the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic. They will evaluate competing theories, examine primary sources, and explore ethical questions surrounding scientific research.
Detective Logic & Analytical Thinking:
Core Texts: Classic mystery stories featuring Sherlock Holmes.
What Students Do: Students will learn how authors construct mysteries, examine textual clues, practice inductive reasoning, and write evidence-based claims about literary texts.
๐ก What Skills Will Your Student Build?
Evidence-Based Writing: Gathering text evidence to build logical arguments and draw conclusions.
Evaluating Claims: Distinguishing between strong scientific/literary evidence and weak assumptions.
Vocabulary Expansion: Mastering academic and domain-specific terminology related to investigation, science, and reasoning.
๐ How You Can Support at Home
Ask Questions: Ask your student, "What clues or theories did you investigate in class today?" or "How did scientists solve the mystery of Yellow Fever?"
Discuss Evidence: When discussing everyday decisions, ask them to back up their claims with evidence (e.g., "What evidence makes you think that?").
Check the Amplify App: Encourage your student to show you the digital tools and evidence apps they are using in class.
We are looking forward to a fantastic, inquiry-driven unit! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Social Studies ๐:
Mrs. Cox and Mrs, Diamond
The 6th grade Social Studies classes finished off the 1st 9 weeks getting to produce their own cuneiform clay tablets! They really enjoyed becoming Mesopotamian Scribes! They were able to experience why not everyone in Mesopotamia was able to write - it took many years of schooling to become a scribe! Now, we are beginning this first week back focusing on Ancient Egypt! We have been diving into the geography of Egypt and techniques the Ancient Egyptians used to help their farming. We are also examining how their society was organized and researching several of their powerful rulers to better understand qualities that make a good ruler.
Pictures below are our Cuneiform Clay Tablets Activity!
Science ๐ฌ:
Mrs. Fake: Ms. Fakeโs science class is wrapping up the 3rd module on populations, communities, and ecosystems. We will measure our progress on Friday with a module test. The JA Biztown was a great success. The kids were so engaged:) We are moving along nicely in 6th grade:)
Mrs. Cox: Mrs. Coxโs science classes have been working on a Google Slides project on Terrestrial and Aquatic Biomes. Students are not only practicing using technology, but they are also practicing their research skills to find out information about the different biomes. We are examining the different adaptations that animals and plants have that allow them to be able to live in the various biomes. We will then analyze our information to conclude why some biomes are more diverse than others.

๐พ Itโs time to meet the Faces of the Pack! ๐พ
Each week, weโre pulling back the curtain and introducing our Husky community to one of the amazing people who helps make Sullivan Heights Middle School such a special place! From favorite traditions and hidden talents to fun facts and a few surprises, Meet the Faces of the Pack gives you a chance to get to know the personalities behind the familiar faces you see every day. Whether theyโre teaching in a classroom, working in an office, keeping our building running, or supporting our Huskies behind the scenes, every member of our staff leaves their own unique paw print on Sullivan Heights. We canโt wait for you to meet them! ๐พ๐
This Week's Face of the Pack is:
Ms. Stephanie Rhea
Position: Teacher
Years at SHMS:
This is year #6 at SHMS!
Fun Facts About Ms. Rhea:
๐พ What is something your students would be surprised to learn about you?
I was the Director of Residence Life and New Student Orientation, and had a career in Student Affairs at several colleges and universities.
๐พ What's your most-used phrase at school?
โMath is NOT magic! Show your work!โ I say this at least a dozen times a day! I don't care if you can do it in your head. I want to see how you got your answer! ๐
๐พ What is one school supply you could NOT survive without?
The multi-colored pack of Tul pens. They're the only ones I won't share!
๐พ What is your favorite Husky P.A.C.K. value and why?
My favorite Husky P.A.C.K. value is Persistence because I believe that success isn't about getting everything right the first time. It's about showing up, putting in the effort, and refusing to give up when things get tough. As a math teacher, I see every day how much students can accomplish when they push through challenges and believe in themselves. Mistakes are part of learning, and sometimes our greatest growth comes from the things we have to work the hardest to achieve. Persistence builds confidence, character, and resilienceโqualities that go far beyond the classroom.
๐พ What celebrity would make the perfect administrator?
I think Dolly Parton would make the perfect school administrator! She's smart, kind, hardworking, and knows how to make people feel valued. She has high expectations but also understands the importance of encouragement, humor, and a little fun. Plus, she'd make sure every student had a book, every teacher felt appreciated, and nobody left school without a smile!
๐พ What's one trend from your middle-school years that absolutely SHOULD or SHOULD NOT come back?
One trend that SHOULD come back: Roller skating parties! There was nothing better than spending a Friday night at the skating rink with your friends, great music, and just enough embarrassment to keep things interesting!
One trend that should NEVER come back: The mile-high, teased bangs held together with half a can of Aqua Net! Between the hairspray and the curling irons, it's a wonder any of us still have hair! ๐
๐พ What is something you believed as a kid that makes you laugh now?
When I was a kid, adults told us every year that people had put bad stuff in our halloween candy that they needed to inspect it before we could eat any after Trick-or-Treating. My mom made us go get it X-rayed at the local hospital once! Looking back, I realize the biggest threat to my Halloween candy was probably my parents sneaking out all the good chocolate! ๐
๐พ What's your go-to "I don't have time for lunch" snack?
I always have a pop-tart, pack of crackers, trail mix, or granola and peanut butter stashed in my desk for emergencies.
๐พ What would your walk-up song be if you entered school like a professional athlete?
My walk-up song would be Lose Yourself by Eminem. It's all about determination, pushing through challenges, and making the most of every opportunity. I believe in giving everything I've got, even when things get tough. Besides, sometimes you just need a little attitude and a great entrance to get the job done! ๐ค๐พ
๐พ What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
The best advice I ever received came from my mom. She always told me, โYou are the people you hang out with.โ At the time, I didn't fully appreciate what she meant, but as I've gotten older, I've realized just how right she was. The people you surround yourself with influence your choices, your attitude, and ultimately the person you become. Choose people who challenge you to be better, lift you up, and bring out the best in you. Good company makes a difference!
๐บ One Last Howl...
Finish this sentence: Itโs great to be a Husky because:
It's great to be a Husky because we have some pretty amazing people who truly care about our Husky community. We work hard, support each other, and at the end of the day, it all comes down to doing what's best for students. That's what makes this such a special place to be! ๐พ
๐พ Guess Who? โ Next Week's Face of the Pack
Can you guess which SHMS staff member we'll feature next week?
Clues:
๐บ I co-founded a student spirit organization in college
๐บ Iโm an Eagle Scout.
๐บ My favorite book is by C.S. Lewis called Out of the Silent Planet
Think you know who it is? Check back in next week's newsletter to see if you guessed correctly!
