KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES

Happy Friday, Explorer Families! Piggy Palooza Week was a huge success! The kids loved all of the dress-up days, but today's Fancy Friday was a favorite. Thank you for supporting the amazing Northwood PTA through your donations! A special thank-you to Allie Van Sant for all of her preparation and organization for Enrichment Fund Week, and to Ginger Crosbie for her support and help, too! We look forward to celebrating tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the bus loop for Family Fun Night! There is no cost to attend the event; however, payment will be needed for concessions and some event stations.

On Thursday afternoon, the Reading Bowl Team was treated with a great surprise! Jerry Craft, author and illustrator of many books, including one of the Reading Bowl selections, J vs. K, joined the students via a virtual visit. He shared how the idea for the book, co-authored with Kwame Alexander, came about. He was witty and engaging, showed the group his Newbery Medal, and shared drawing tips with the students. Thank you to Mrs. Bauer, our METI, for arranging this special connection!

Enjoy Fall Break! Take time to relax with family and friends and, of course, enjoy lots of good books.

With gratitude,

Heather Q. Rucker, Principal

PIGGY PALOOZA: WE DID IT, NORTHWOOD!

Thanks to the incredible generosity and enthusiasm of our Northwood community, we officially reached 100% of our Enrichment Fund goal! 🎉🎉🎉

A HUGE THANK YOU to every student who brought in donations, every family who contributed, and our amazing teachers and staff who helped make Piggy Palooza such a fun and successful week! From the daily raffles and Golden Piggy trophies to all of the prizes and school spirit, it was an incredible week from start to finish.

We also want to give a very special THANK YOU to Jeremiah’s Italian Ice for generously sponsoring Piggy Palooza and helping us make this week extra sweet for our students! 🍧🐷

We couldn’t have done it without YOU! ❤️🤍💙

And if you still have donations to turn in, bring them to Family Fun Night tonight — every dollar raised continues to support the programs and experiences that make Northwood such a special place for our students.

Thank you, Northwood, for showing up BIG for our school! 🐷🎉

SECOND GRADE EXPLORERS

We have been having a blast in second grade! We loved wearing matching pajamas on Monday and beginning two-digit subtraction. One of the best parts of second grade recently has been our skill groups. The teachers have enjoyed getting to know students from other homerooms, and the students have loved switching groups to experience a different second-grade teacher and classroom. We have also enjoyed completing one of our first AVID one-pagers on the states of matter.

THIRD GRADE EXPLORERS

Third grade students are having fun while learning through hands-on activities! In math, students have been using ducks, marbles, mini animal toys, frisbees, Brain Flakes, cups, cubes, and cacti galore to build multiplication equations. These manipulatives have helped strengthen their understanding of multiplication.

In social studies, students explored Native American cultures by creating teepees, snow goggles, and totem poles as part of their Native American unit. Students have also enjoyed interactive games and activities that help them build friendships, work together, and create a strong classroom community. These engaging experiences make learning exciting, encourage creativity and critical thinking, and help students retain what they learn.

HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHTS: EARLY CHECKOUT PROCEDURES

The school day ends at 2:20 pm. Please avoid early checkouts as instruction goes on until 2:15 pm. If your child must be checked out early, please do so before 2:00 pm. After 2:00 pm, students will be sent using normal dismissal procedures so as not to interfere with the school-wide dismissal process. We appreciate your cooperation and consideration.

AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK

Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.

As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!

Next week's (9.28.2026) AVID goal is: to say thank you when given something and to say please when asking for something.

DISMISSAL CHANGES? MAKE THEM IN PICKUP PATROL

Northwood has partnered with PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately and safely dismissed each day.

If you need to change how your child should be dismissed, you should submit that information via PickUp Patrol before 1:30 pm on the day of the change, and our staff will be notified. We no longer accept dismissal requests via email or paper notes. Please do not email teachers directly.

All dismissal information and changes must be entered into PickUp Patrol.

If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Robertson at Northwood’s front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org.

CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND

Did you know? Our school community has a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account will be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!

Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Mrs. Rosa Gutierrez, our cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Mrs. Gutierrez, gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
