Solar Eclipse!
On Monday, April 8th, CRMS is prepared to provide an experience for all students and staff to safely watch the total solar eclipse at school. We have received a gracious donation of safety glasses from PTA Sponsor Steiner Eye Care for each person to have glasses. We will be adjusting our bell schedule so that all students will have classes, finish lunch, be escorted outside with grade level classes to experience this once-in-a-lifetime full solar eclipse and then return to regularly scheduled classes.
A few important logistics for campus preparations during the event as we coordinate for a great learning opportunity for all of our students:
- Campus is closed to all visitors during the watch event so that we actively attend to the safety of our students.
- If you are going to pick your student up early on that April 8th, we will not be able to get students out for early pick-up after 12:00pm due to an adjusted bell schedule for lunches and the eclipse viewing, so please plan accordingly to pick up prior to 12:00pm or after 2:00pm.
- The campus office will be temporarily closed from approximately 1:15-1:45pm so there may be a slight delay in answering phone calls.
- If your student is absent on 4/8/24, please don't forget to send in a note just as you would for any other absence and our attendance office will code accordingly.
- Our CRMS PTA has graciously provided waters/snacks for all students and staff, and will also have some shade awnings set up for those in need so that all will have a comfortable watch experience.
As well, in preparation of the event, our Science teachers will be having discussions with students on Friday, April 5th regarding eclipses and how to safely observe it. Then, all CRMS students will receive a follow-up solar eclipse lesson in Science classes on Tuesday, April 9th to expand on what every student witnessed on Monday.
We are excited for this learning opportunity for all of our Eagle students and staff!
Here is the Leander ISD district Eclipse website for more information on how we are preparing for the upcoming eclipse. On April 8, 2024, from 12:15 pm until 3:00 pm, Leander ISD will be in the path of a total solar eclipse. The event will allow the population of our geographic area to view this truly spectacular event, stand in the moon’s shadow, and observe the sun’s corona. Totality, when it will be darkest as the sun is fully blocked by the moon, will occur from around 1:35 to 1:39 in the Leander/Cedar Park area.
Because of safety concerns, parents may elect not to have their students participate in eclipse viewing outside. We respect the fact that it is your decision as a parent or guardian to choose for your child to not view the eclipse while at school. To opt-out of having your students participate, please complete this LISD opt-out form for CRMS families by Friday 4/5/24 at 10am to notify Leander ISD that you do not grant permission for your child to participate in the outdoor activities. Students whose parents complete this Google form will not be permitted outdoors during the eclipse except in case of an emergency. Your student’s school will make alternative arrangements for them which may include viewing the eclipse online. This opt-out form does not excuse the student's attendance from attending school as the campus will be providing alternative arrangements for the student to have a viewing activity indoors. The form must be completed once per student. To grant permission for your child to participate, no further action is required.
Safety is a high priority for Leander ISD. We will take precautions to make this experience safe and educational. With the support of campus funds, PTAs, and our greater community, Leander ISD has secured safe-viewing glasses for students and staff. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun during the eclipse. Students will not be permitted to look at the sun without solar viewing glasses or through unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars, or other optical devices. For more information on viewing the eclipse safely to prevent eye damage, please visit the NASA website.

Mrs. Zapata, Special Education Teacher
Mrs. Zapata is one of our amazing resource teachers here at CRMS and she has been in education for 18 years. She says that her favorite thing about Canyon Ridge are the supportive and amazing people. One of the things she is excited about using in her class this year is the IXL program, helping students to participate in year-long personal goal setting in math. Ms. Zapata has 4 important life lessons for her students to remember: 1. Learning is a journey and the journey is life-long. Even your parents, grandparents and teachers are still learning! 2. Don’t ever be afraid to make mistakes… because mistakes are an important part of learning. There is a saying I love… “If you can learn from a mistake, then it was a mistake worth making.” 3. Never be afraid to ask a question in class. Always remember any question you ask in front of the class is a question at least one of your classmates also would want to ask… they may just be too afraid to. 4. Be brave and your actions will not only help you, but also help those around you. Be kind :) Important lessons for anyone we think!
Mrs. Schaal, Special Education Teacher
Mrs. Schaal is one of our superstar Goals teachers. She has been teaching for 9 years. She says her favorite thing about Canyon Ridge are her colleagues, “We always are working together and supporting each other.” She wants her students to remember that we want to learn to think about what we say and do and how it affects ourselves and others, but also that mistakes happen and we can almost always recover. She really loves when her students prove to her, and themselves, that they can do hard things. Fun Fact about Ms Schaal she once had a rescue skunk!

Attendance
Important Attendance Reminders:
- Absence notes should be emailed to crmsattendance@leanderisd.org within 48 hours of the absence.
When you email the school, please include the student's first and last name and ID #. Student nicknames can cause confusion with attendance coding.
If you will be picking up your child from school early, please call the school (512-570-3500) ahead of time to let the Receptionist know. This allows our Receptionist time to get a pass written ahead of time and helps to move the process along more quickly.
The only people who will be permitted to pick up a child will be parents/guardians and those individuals listed as an emergency contact in your Home Access Center (HAC). Due to safety reasons, we cannot allow a parent to call in and give permission for someone to pick up your child during the school day other than those listed in HAC.
We do not allow early pick up after 4:00pm.
- If you feel like there is an error for a particular class period, please email the teacher directly first. For example, if your student was tardy and the teacher accidentally already marked the student absence, email the teacher because the attendance office has to have it in writing from the teacher before attendance can update anything
- There is a turn around time in updates if a student was with the nurse, AP, counselor, etc. It is not necessary to email the attendance office. Please remember that we have almost 1100 students so it will take 1-2 business days to show the update. We appreciate your patience and understanding that our team is working tirelessly to support all of our Eagles!

Bus updates from Transportation
The Leander ISD Transportation Department uses SMART Tag – a system that provides accurate, near real-time monitoring of where and when students load onto and unload off of their school bus – to help promote student safety and security, keeping parents, school administrators and the district’s transportation department more informed.
Returning bus riders are asked to continue to use the SMART Tag card they were issued last year. If they do not have a card, the student will punch in using their lunch number (student ID) when getting on and off the bus. Bus drivers will begin to issue cards in September for new bus riders.
The online parent portal allows parents and guardians to register to receive alerts for when the bus will arrive at their child’s stop; see a live map of their child’s bus; and view a riding history for their child. Be sure to register if you have never done so.
By Wednesday, Aug. 9, Leander ISD parents can enter their home address into Infofinder to look up their child’s bus route number, pick-up/drop-off times, and bus stop locations for the 2023–24 school year. Bus routes are subject to change, so LISD parents are strongly encouraged to confirm their child’s bus information again the week prior to the start of school.
School Breakfast & Lunches
During the 2023–24 school year, Leander ISD will welcome back Southwest Foodservice Excellence (SFE) as its food-services provider. That’s right – that means Crispitos are coming back!
All students who qualify for free meals during the 2023–24 school year will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. In 2023–24, students who qualify for reduced-price meals will receive free breakfast meals and lunch for $0.40.
For elementary students who do not qualify for F&R meals, prices will remain the same from last year. At elementary school, the cost of breakfast is $1.50 and lunch is $2.90. For secondary students, the cost of breakfast is $1.75 and lunch is $3.15.
Parents who would like to apply to find out if they are eligible for F&R meals for their children can visit our Child Nutrition Services website for more information.
