Dear Husky Families! ๐Ÿพ

As the school year winds down, we have been reflecting with deep pride and gratitude on what has been an extraordinary year at Heritage Heights School. As new members of this amazing community, we are so thankful for the warm welcome and support from students, staff, and families. It had been a joy to become part of the Husky family!

Over the past ten months, we have seen incredible growth in our studentsโ€”not just in height (we know some of you have outgrown your shoes!), but in confidence, academics, resilience, and character. We are so proud of the kind, curious, and capable learners they have become.

June has been filled with celebration and school spiritโ€”from Divisional and Zone Track and Field, Badminton Zones, and the Young Authors Conference to our inspiring Student Matters presentation and Bus Driver Appreciation Day. We also celebrated the arts with our bandโ€™s standout performance at Bandextravaganza and the unforgettable Grade 5 and 6 play, Captain Starblaster.

We are thrilled to share that thanks to our amazing School Council and community, weโ€™re nearing our $75,000 playground goal. Construction begins this summer and will bring lasting benefits to our students and the wider community. May brought even more Husky pride with a spirited in-school Canada Day and the joyful welcome of our incoming Kindergarten students.

As we wrap up the 2024โ€“2025 school year, weโ€™re focused on finishing strong and are already looking ahead with excitement to 2025โ€“2026. Thank you for walking beside us this year. We are honoured to serve this remarkable community and proud to be Huskiesโ€”together.

With appreciation,
Ms. Rita Marie Rahn (Principal)
Mrs. Shanda Dupras (Vice Principal)

Preventing the Summer Slide: Tips for Parents Preventing the Summer Slide: Tips for Parents

zoom_out_map

Summer is almost here, and the excitement for the upcoming break can be felt throughout the school!

While this time offers a well-deserved rest and opportunities for family fun, it also means a pause in the daily learning routines that support academic growth. Without regular reading and skill-building activities, many children can lose some of the progress they made during the school year โ€” a challenge often referred to as the "summer slide."

The good news is that families can make a big difference. Simple, consistent literacy and learning activities at home can help children maintain their skills and return to school confident and ready to learn.

Here are some practical strategies:

  • Daily Reading: Encourage your child to read for at least 15 minutes each day. This consistent practice helps maintain and improve reading skills.
  • Engaging Activities: Incorporate literacy into everyday tasks. Activities like cooking (reading recipes), grocery shopping (reading labels), or playing word games can make learning fun and relevant.
  • Library Visits: Regular trips to the library can provide access to a variety of books and reading programs, fostering a love for reading.
  • Writing Exercises: Encourage your child to keep a journal, write letters, or create stories. Writing reinforces reading skills and enhances creativity.
  • Use of Technology: Educational apps and online resources can offer interactive ways to practice literacy skills.

By integrating these activities into daily routines, parents can play a pivotal role in supporting their children's literacy development throughout the summer.

Making the Most of Summer Break: Keep the Learning Going!

Summer is just around the corner! While it is a well-deserved time for rest and relaxationโ€”for both students and parentsโ€”it is also a great opportunity to keep young minds active. A little bit of learning over the summer can go a long way in helping students return to school feeling confident and ready to succeed.

The good news? With a bit of creativity, learning can feel like play! Here are a few simple ways to keep your child engaged this summer:

  • Make it a Game Night: Host a weekly family game night to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Build and Create: Encourage innovation with building toys like LEGO, Magna-Tiles, or ZOOBs.

  • Get Growing: Start a small garden and involve your child in planting, watering, and harvesting fruits or vegetables.

  • Capture the Memories: Inspire creativity by having your child make a scrapbook of summer adventures.

  • Stick to a Routine: Keeping regular bedtime hours and limiting screen time can ease the back-to-school transition.

  • Stay Active: Go for bike rides, nature walks, hikes, or enjoy time at the poolโ€”movement fuels learning!

  • Read Together: Make reading a daily habit. Libraries often have summer reading programs for kids of all ages.

  • Most importantlyโ€”Have Fun! Summer flies by, so make the most of every moment.

Captain Starblaster Soars!

Our Grade 5 and 6 students took us to the stars with their incredible performance of Captain Starblaster! With dazzling costumes, witty dialogue, and out-of-this-world acting, the show was nothing short of spectacular. The talent, confidence, and teamwork on display had the audience laughing, cheering, and wondering if Broadway might be calling! A special shoutout goes to the phenomenal directing duoโ€”Mr. Berrigan and Ms. Leahmanโ€”whose dedication, creativity, and countless hours (during school, after hours, and even weekends!) made this production a stellar success. Thank you for making Captain Starblaster a shining highlight of our school year!

Track & Field Success โ€“ A Season to Remember!

We are so proud of our 68 student-athletes from Grades 6โ€“9 who represented Heritage Heights at the Divisional Track and Field Meet this year! Despite the chilly weather, our students, staff, and amazing volunteers showed determination, grit, and school spirit throughout the day.

A special congratulations to the three athletes who qualified for Zones โ€“ Victoria, Greyson, and Jackson โ€“ who all placed in the single digits! Victoria had an especially outstanding performance, finishing first place in all of her running events!

We also want to extend a huge thank you to Miss Steier, Mr. Reeve, and all the dedicated teachers who helped organize and run our school Track and Field events. Your energy, encouragement, and behind-the-scenes work helped make this season such a success for our athletes.

Husky Band Students Shine at Meadow Ridge! ๐ŸŽถ Husky Band Students Shine at Meadow Ridge! ๐ŸŽถ

We are incredibly proud of our talented Husky Band students, who recently participated in a fantastic afternoon of music, learning, and collaboration at Meadow Ridge School! On Wednesday, May 21, our musicians boarded the bus after lunch, instruments in hand and ready for an unforgettable experience. From 1:30โ€“3:30 p.m., they worked with a guest conductor and broke into smaller sectionals to refine their skills and elevate their sound.

Following a well-earned pizza party, our students took the stage for a dynamic joint concert, performing both as the Heritage Heights Husky Ensemble and in a powerful mass band with their Meadow Ridge peers. It was a wonderful showcase of growth, teamwork, and musical excellence.

A special thank you goes to Ms. Lehmann, our dedicated school band teacher, whose leadership, passion, and countless hours of preparation made this experience possible for our young musicians.

We are so proud of our Huskies for representing Heritage Heights with such talent and enthusiasm, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families who came out to support these incredible performers! ๐ŸŽท๐Ÿฅ๐ŸŽบ

We are incredibly proud to share that Heritage Heights School raised the most money in the entire division for this yearโ€™s Terry Fox School Run! This remarkable achievement is a testament to the compassion, generosity, and community spirit of our students, families, and staff.

A special shout-out to our kindergarten classrooms who were recognized during our Spring Pep Rally for raising the most for the The Terry Fox Foundation within our school community.

Thank you to everyone who supported this important cause โ€” you have made a meaningful difference, and we couldnโ€™t be prouder to be Huskies!
