Superintendent's Message
The first month of school has been full of energy and excitement, and we are proud of the way our students have begun the year. From classrooms to athletic fields to music and art rooms, our students are already showing curiosity and demonstrating their learning. As we move into October, Iβd like to share this yearβs District Goals, which will guide our work and ensure every student feels inspired, valued, and supported.
With goal areas of Instructional Practice and Student Achievement, Academic & Wellness Counseling, Communication and Student Voice, and Fiscal Responsibility and Facilities, our goal statements are designed to be broad so they can capture the forward thinking and student-centered priorities and work that we have always valued and aspired to. As you will see throughout this monthβs newsletter, we have already begun our work in alignment with our district goals and our mission statement. I wanted to highlight a new project this year related to our goal of Communication and Student Voice β student surveys to better understand student wishes and challenges at Central. Mr. Brandt and I met with a group of student leaders to discuss the design of the short βpulseβ surveys and look forward to collecting student responses and feedback throughout the year. Thank you to our student leaders for helping to lead this important project! Mr. Brandt and I will also continue to hold monthly lunches with different groups of students for additional feedback throughout the year.
As we move into our strategic planning process this Fall, I want to remind everyone of their opportunity to participate in shaping the future goals of Hunterdon Central. It is so important that we have all voices representedβstudents, staff, parents and families, community members, and business partnersβas our strategic plan will set the vision and goals for the District for the next five years. We currently have over 100 people who have RSVPβed, and we welcome more! You can find more information, along with the registration form, on our website. - Jessica Cangelosi-Hade, HCRHSD Superintendent
School Pictures & Senior Portrait Retakes/Makeups
School Pictures for 9th thru 11th graders were taken on September 11th and 12th. Freshmen and sophomores who ordered photos can pick up their packages in the 9/10 house office; juniors can pick up their packages in the 11/12 house office during unit lunch or block 5. Anyone who did not order a package will receive their proof via email to the parent indicated as Guardian 1 in Genesis on or around October 1st. Retakes and makeups will take place on October 14th from 7:50am-1:50pm in the auditorium. An appointment is required for October 14th, which you can make through this website. Students will receive a pass in Genesis for photos based on their appointment time.
SENIORS - If you had your senior portrait taken but do not like it and want a retake, or if you never had a senior portrait taken, Normandy Studio will be back on campus November 3rd, 4th and 5th. They will be in the IMC in the 415 classroom behind circulation desk. Appointment is required to have a portrait taken on these days. Please make an appointment at this website: https://booknow.appointment-plus.com/9z1sng0m/?e_id=36997. You will select either 1st time getting a portrait, or retake session, then scroll to November calendar to see open dates. There is a $25 fee for retakes. Keep in mind this is during the school day so consider what class you are okay missing part of when making your appointment. Appointments are 15 minutes. Passes will be issued based on appointments scheduled.
Department Highlights
This month we highlight our Magnet Program!
Did you know that Hunterdon Central currently offers 6 academies in its Magnet Program? We do! Spanning across several departments, Central offers Architectural Design, Biomedical Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Media & Communications, and Robotics academies. Check out the presentation on the Magnet Program from our recent Board of Education meeting by Dr. Robert Hastings, click here to view.
Students have the opportunity to pursue specialized programs that empower them to focus on a particular passion or career area - all while staying at Central! Each academy consists of a cohesive series of three or four courses and includes opportunities for dual enrollment or articulated college credit with a college or university, an industry-valued credential, or both. Students who complete the series of academy courses and a capstone project will earn an academy pin and an endorsement on their diploma, which can help with college admissions or employment opportunities.
We are hosting a Magnet Program Showcase for current 7th and 8th graders and their parents on Tuesday, October 28 at 6:30PM in the Commons so they can learn more about our academies before entering Hunterdon Central and scheduling courses.

Latest news from the playing field!
The Fall athletic season is well underway at Hunterdon Central, with football, boys soccer, girls soccer, gymnastics, girls volleyball, cross country, girls tennis, and cheerleading all actively competing. Each program has demonstrated a strong start throughout the month of September, highlighted by the dedication and growth of our student-athletes.
Across all sports, athletes are consistently working toward team goals, displaying discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Their early successes reflect the commitment of both players and coaches, and provide a strong foundation for the remainder of the season.
Looking ahead, our teams are preparing for upcoming county and state tournaments. With continued effort and determination, Hunterdon Central student-athletes are poised to represent the school community with pride and make a lasting impact in postseason competition. Come out and support our athletes! Click here for our sports schedule.

Student activities are off and running for the new school year!
The Dance Team hosted their Youth Night during our first Home Football game. Young dancers joined them for the first quarter to get a firsthand experience of performing during a football game! Also, over the summer, the dance team won several awards at the UDA Northeast Convention Camp at the University of Scranton and qualified for Nationals in February (photo above).
Looking ahead to October... we sure have some amazing events on the horizon!
The Week of Respect starts October off by reminding students of the importance of respecting one another and preventing bullying. Multiple clubs are teaming up that Monday, October 6th during Block 5 to cover the campus in positive sidewalk messages. We also asked some students what respect means to them and will share their responses on the morning announcements all that week.
Thespians are hosting an evening of performances on October 3rd at 7PM in the Little Theater.
Spirit Week kicks off on October 13th. Prepare for a competition across the grade levels culminating at the October 17th Pep Rally! The Homecoming Dance will follow the Homecoming Game on the 17th. Tickets for the dance will be on sale the week before, more info to come.
The LatinX Alliance is preparing to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the IMC on October 20th during Block 5. Stop by to join the celebration of Hispanic culture.
Central will go PINK for the final regular season home game on October 24th.
Observations by the Principal
As we wrap up the first month of the 25-26 school year, I look back at the ways we worked together to create a welcoming community. Students and staff came together to welcome over 600 new students between the Class of 2029 and transferring upper classmen. We welcomed new staff members in all areas of our district. Many of our programs had Youth Nights, building connections and excitement about HC with our future Red Devils. And we had excellent crowds and positive vibes at our Back to School Night on September 18th. The last weekend of September was no different.
We had the Red Devil Cheerleaders, along with other programs, going out into the community, in this case the Raritan Township Committee Day, see photo above.
And we welcomed former Red Devils back, in this case members of the Class of 1975 as part of their 50 year reunion, see photo below.
I look forward to heading into October and the fall months with the positive momentum that was built for an effective, welcoming community where our students can learn and grow. - Edward C. Brandt, HCRHS Principal

Speaking of college and career services, college visits began in mid-September and run through November, with over 90 colleges coming to HC and opening opportunities for our upperclassmen to hear more about college directly from representatives. There were also initial visits from military liaisons to review upcoming Military Days at Hunterdon Central.
Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) are also meeting with students and helping with additional goal setting and success strategies high school students need to reach their best potential while at HC. The SACs have also done push-in lessons with the entire ninth grade class in these few short weeks! The SACs will also visit the Freshman Tech Tools classrooms during the beginning of this fall semester.
