D-West Instruction

9th Grade Orientation: All freshmen received a two-step orientation through their Language Arts and History classes. They completed a really fun Goosechase scavenger hunt to learn "how we roll" in the library, and then participated in a tech session to make sure they start off on the right foot!

Green Screen Use: Our green screen was used by our transition classes for headshots.

Independent Reading Selection: We worked with three separate groups: 9th grade students for independent read projects, reading classes book selections, and our AP Language students on book selection. For each group, we pulled a selected group of books (by genre, level, and theme) for the students to explore.

AP Seminar- Our AP Seminar class came in for a database scavenger hunt.

New Student and New Teacher Orientations- We ran orientation sessions for all new teachers and new students at West to help serve as a support for those entering the building.

.

September is all about the orientations!

In September, we spend a lot of time orienting new students: 9th graders, students who are new to the district, and teachers who are new to West as well. Pictured above, however, is something that is new and special at West. A student who was new last year approached our staff and wanted to have a new student luncheon to offer community and connection. Lots of laughter and storytelling ensued-- it was a great day!

Professional Development

  • Librarian Michelle Nass is taking a graduate course in multicultural services in library programs. So far, this has resulted in an increased collaboration with our ESL teacher and students, increased awareness and display of Hispanic Heritage month including a mobile book cart offering, and the development of a libguide that focuses exclusively on accessibility tools for our staff and students.

Committees and Meetings

  • SAS Team meetings: Monday and Wednesdays, period 5
  • PAC Team meetings
  • Met with district Open Educational Resources committee to vet open resources for use within history courses
