Head Cheetah Message Head Cheetah Message

Families,

Thank you to everyone who attended our Writing Celebration Open House on Wednesday evening! It is always such a joy to see our cheetahs proudly sharing their work with their families. Our Author Visit on Thursday was also a big hit with our learners! Mr. Daniel Jude Miller was incredibly impressed by how well prepared our students were for his visit; and he was thrilled to be greeted by the hundreds of “monsters” our students created for his arrival.

In related news, we are excited to share that our Summer Reading & Math Website is up and running. Please take a moment to check it out! Summer Reading & Math 2025

Please remember that our Fun Days are next week. Dress appropriately, and apply sunscreen at home.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Garden Club

Did you know the school garden has strawberries? This spring garden club members moved strawberry plants because they started growing outside their garden bed. We discovered the Memorial School Garden is bursting with strawberries! Garden Club members picked and sampled strawberries. Everyone agreed they are delicious!

Cheetah Council Is Partnering With An Eagle Scout Candidate

East Hampton resident, Colin Roy, is working to earn his Eagle Scout Badge; and he has chosen to partner with our Cheetah Council to design and build a little free library. Colin met with the Cheetah Council yesterday; and together, they decided on a name for our new library box. It will be called “Read And Run”. The box will be decorated with our Cheetah mascot and our Profile Of The Graduate logo. We can’t wait to see the finished product!

Congratulations to Elizabeth Campbell

Elizabeth was the lucky winner of our raffle at the Writing Celebration. She won a signed collection of the author’s books!

Mrs. DeGross Donates Her Hair

During the grade 3 lunch wave on Thursday, Mrs. Warshaw cut Mrs. DeGross’s hair! She will be donating it to an organization called Children With Hair Loss, where it will be used to create wigs for children suffering from hair loss. Way to take care of others, Mrs. DeGross!

Author Visit

Throughout the day on Thursday, Mr. Daniel Jude Miller provided an engaging presentation to each of our grade levels. He discussed what it’s like to be an author and illustrator, and talked about where his ideas come from. He was amazed by the 500 monsters on display at Memorial School, and said that he’s never seen a school be so prepared for his visit. Special thanks go to our Instructional Specialists, Abby Skarvelas and Kerry Liebler for orchestrating his visit, as well as Rebecca Flannery for reading Mr. Miller’s books to each of her classes over the last couple of weeks, and to Mrs. Vining for creating monsters (like those in Mr. Miller’s stories) during her art classes! We also want to thank the EHEPTO for supporting the event!

Summer Reading

Literacy News- Summer Reading Program

Memorial School is so excited to kick off our summer reading program!

As a school community we applaud all you have done to support your child’s engagement and learning this school year. As we approach the gifts of summer, and a well-deserved break, it will be critically important for your learner to continue to grow as an independent reader, and to recognize reading as one of the many positive life choices they can make. In an effort to maintain students’ level of reading independence and prevent summer reading loss, we are encouraging all students to set goals to continue their reading journey over the summer.

For K-3rd Graders

Next week in library classes, readers will be discussing goals and receiving their summer reading log. This log should be returned in the fall and readers who turn it in will be invited to participate in a special reading celebration.

In the classroom, students also had a special visit from public children’s librarians, Ms. Christine and Ms. Jondahl, to hear about all the exciting things the East Hampton Public Library has to offer this summer. We hope that you take advantage of the amazing programing and book selection available to enhance your child’s summer reading experience. Also make sure to check out our Summer Read Aloud Series schedule that is back at the public library this year!

For more information visit Memorial’s summer reading website.

Summer Math

Dear Memorial Families,

As we near the end of the school year, we want to make you aware of the various opportunities the district will be offering over the summer months in order to support your learner’s continued engagement with mathematics. We recognize there are many summer activities for students to support their needs. With participation in any of the activities, your child will be able to maintain their math skills over the summer months. Your support in this initiative is greatly appreciated.

Bridges Links: Math At Home and Math Apps

Details about the opportunities and how your learner can participate can be found by clicking the various links. All students will receive a hard copy of the district’s Summer Math Packet next week. We will communicate a due date for completed summer activities in the fall – and plan for a fun celebration!

Please reach out to district math specialists, Lis Ellis (K-2) and Andrea Winiarski (3-5), with any questions.

We hope you have “sum” fun with math over the summer!

Library News

Hi Cheetah families!

May is well under way in the Memorial School Library!

See below for grade level classroom expectations.

  • PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of bugs, animals, and summer.

  • Kindergarten has started their work around coding. We are learning to create basic sequences by using our beebobs, which are codable robots. Students are also enjoying listening to Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Voirst .

  • First grade students are continuing to build their coding skills by using our codable robots, called beebots. The students are showing a lot of perseverance when working through a variety of challenges. Students are also listening to fractured fairy tales and enjoying these twisted takes on the classic stories.

  • Second graders are finishing up the chapter book, The Sword in the Tree and reading some fractured fairy tales. We are also completing a STEM challenge to recreate an item from our favorite fairytale out of legos.

  • Third graders are going strong! One important thing we did in May was get ready for a visit from author and illustrator Daniel Jude Miller. Kids enjoyed sharing his books, Monsters in Manhattan and Everybody Wake Up!! Each class generated questions to share with Mr. Miller during his visit. May is also Asian American & Pacific Islander Month. To celebrate our planet’s largest and most populous continent, students learned to play tapatan, a tic-tac-toe style game from the Philipenes. They also explored building different animals with tangrams, an activity based on a traditional Chinese puzzle. Finally, classes have started creating Bee-Bot challenges for first graders who are learning to program these cool robots.

All books are now due to the library, please help your child get their books in.

If you feel that you have received a message in error just let us know, as our inventory is underway. It is a very busy time for us and we appreciate everyone’s best efforts in getting books located and returned.

For more information and updates, make sure to check out the library website at https://sites.google.com/site/centermemoriallibrary/ .

Questions, please contact Mrs. Flannery at rflannery@easthamptonct.org.

Safe Snack Guide

Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with any illness or injury (such as strep, flu, pink eye, fracture/broken bone, lice, pneumonia, covid, etc.) as the nurse office tracks illnesses and sends notification letters home if there are 2 or more cases in a specific classroom. Please be specific with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)

  • Mild headache and/or stomachache

  • Fatigue

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)

  • Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)

  • Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)

  • Chills

  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches

  • Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough

  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth

  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s clearance, as needed. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.

Medications

Every medication that is brought into school requires a “Medication Authorization” form to be signed by the student’s doctor and parent/guardian and the medication in original packaging with prescription label is to be brought in by a parent/guardian, not in the child’s backpack. No child may carry their own medications at the Elementary level. Please use a large ziplock bag for the medication plus the medication order, and label the bag with your child’s name before dropping off. Any controlled medications will need to be counted and signed off with the RN and parent so please allow for a few extra minutes at drop off.

Please note: COUGH DROPS count as medications and are not allowed in school. All over-the-counter medications also need a medication order from your provider.

Food

We have several students with severe food allergies, therefore we highly recommend non food items to share for birthday celebrations. We ask for at least 48 hours advance notice. A great resource for allergy free snacks is the Safe Snack guide at https://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-guide/

Health Concerns

If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about e-mail kwilliams@easthamptonct.org and mlemire@easthamptonct.org at any time.

If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc) it is best that you send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.

Phone Numbers/Contact information

Please make sure to update cell phone numbers and make sure mailboxes are not full. We call home and use ParentSquare for notifying parents and it is essential that we are able to contact you in case your child is ill, hurt or needs to be picked up from school or in case of an emergency.

Respectfully,

Safe School Climate Safe School Climate

The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

Please note

When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
