FROM THE PRINCIPAL FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Silver Lake Families,

We’re off to a fantastic start to the 2025–26 school year!

It was truly wonderful to see so many families join us for our September Open House and Annual Title I Meeting. The turnout was amazing, and the energy in the building was even better!

We loved seeing students and families exploring the school together, participating in the scavenger hunt, and engaging with staff to learn more about our programs and community. Events like this remind us how special it is to partner with our families in support of student success.

Silver Lake Elementary is a Title I school!

What exactly does that mean?

  • Title I is supplemental funding provided to schools with a high incidence of students living in families with limited resources.

  • It recognizes that typically, those students need additional support and opportunities to reach standard.

  • It also recognizes that a high proportion of students with limited resources impacts all students in a school.

How does it help your student and family?

  • We have hired additional support staff:

    • Behavior Interventionist (James Allred)
    • .5 School Counselor (Katie Seaward)
    • Family Support Specialist (Buffy Osborn)
    • .5 Multilingual Learner Teacher (Jenny Elgincolin)
    • Academic Interventionist (Cerra Sand)

  • We have additional resources:

    • Staff Development and Materials
    • Extended Day Classes (before and after school)
    • Parent Involvement Activities ($5000 budget for events/activities)

What is required?

  • A compact, or agreement, between parents, staff, and students is agreed upon together:

    • The compact spells out each individual’s responsibility to help a student be successful.
    • The compact must be reviewed each year and signed.
    • Which of the suggestions for the School-Parent-Student Compact are most important to you?
    • See the link to the feedback form below for your opportunity to provide input.

  • A written Parent Involvement Plan documenting how the money will be spent:
    • The Parent Involvement Plan must have parent input and suggestions.
    • Some school planned events include:
      • Teacher Meet and Greet
      • Open House/Annual Title I Meeting
      • SLAM Night (Science, Technology, Arts, and Math)
      • Multicultural Night
      • Spring Play/Musical
      • Winter Music Program
    • See the link to the feedback form below for your opportunity to provide input.

  • A parent survey at the end of the year:

    • To measure how well parents and students were served.

What are your ideas?

  • What activities would you and your child enjoy doing together?

  • How can we, as a school, support you as you help your child?

  • Please complete the feedback form and return it to your child’s teacher or the SLE front office by Friday, October 17th.

The final copies of the Title I documents will be shared with all families at Fall conferences in November.

In Partnership,

Silver Lake Principal, Theresa Campbell

Safety Corner: Practicing Preparedness at Home and School

At Silver Lake Elementary, the safety of our students is always a top priority. In September, our students participated in the first fire drill of the year. We are proud of how quickly and calmly they followed directions, demonstrating the importance of practicing routines before an emergency ever happens.

In October, we will take part in our annual Earthquake Drill on International ShakeOut Day – Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 AM. This statewide drill provides an opportunity for schools, businesses, and families to practice what to do in the event of an earthquake. Our students will practice the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” procedure, which helps keep them safe during ground shaking.

While we regularly practice at school, we encourage families to also prepare at home. Emergencies are unpredictable, and having a plan in place provides comfort and security for both children and adults. Here are a few tips for families:

  • Create a Family Plan: Decide together how your family will respond to emergencies such as fire, earthquake, or severe weather. Talk about what each person’s role will be.

  • Identify a Safe Meeting Spot: Choose a location near your home where your family will gather if you need to leave quickly.

  • Build an Emergency Kit: Keep essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents in an easy-to-grab container.

  • Practice Together: Just like at school, practice helps everyone feel prepared and confident about what to do.

For additional resources, families can visit www.ready.gov/kids or www.shakeout.org for checklists and guidance on building a family emergency plan.

By working together at school and at home, we can ensure our students are surrounded by a community that values safety, preparation, and peace of mind.

October is Disability History & Awareness Month

Building Understanding, Kindness, and Inclusion Together!

October is Disability History and Awareness Month, a special time when we learn about the experiences, contributions, and rights of people with disabilities. At our school, we believe that every student deserves to feel seen, valued, and included. This month helps us grow stronger as a caring school community.

What Are We Learning?

In classrooms, students are:

  • Reading stories that feature kids with different abilities.
  • Learning about famous people with disabilities who changed the world.
  • Talking about how to be kind, respectful, and inclusive every day.

Why It Matters

Did you know that about 1 in 5 people has a disability? Some are visible, like using a wheelchair or hearing aid. Others, like autism, ADHD, or learning differences, are not always easy to see.

Disability Awareness Month helps us:

  • Understand that different doesn't mean less.
  • Appreciate everyone's unique strengths.
  • Practice empathy: putting ourselves in someone else's shoes.

How You Can Join In

Families play an important role in teaching kindness and understanding. Here are a few ways to support at home:

  • Talk Together: Ask your child what they’re learning about disabilities.
  • Read Together: Look for children's books that celebrate differences and inclusion. (There are many great stories out there! Ask Mrs. Moser or a public librarian.)
  • Celebrate Differences: Share stories from your own family about challenges and strengths.

Let's Keep Growing

Our school is proud to celebrate diversity in all forms, including ability. We want every student to feel like they belong, because they do.

Thank you for helping us build a school where everyone is welcome, respected, and supported.

FAMILY SUPPORT FAMILY SUPPORT

Hello Silver Lake Families,

Welcome to a beautiful and colorful October in Everett. The Operation School Bell Clothing Program just began a couple of weeks ago, and the program is available until February. Please be patient if you are waiting for your child's bag of clothing, as it takes time for volunteers to pack up bags of clothes this time of year for the school districts. If you still need a form and qualify, please contact Mrs. Osborn, Family Specialist on ParentSquare.

If your student is signed up for Friday Food Bags, the first distribution day for food bags will be Friday, October 3rd. If you feel your student needs this program and qualifies, there is a limit and waiting list.

Please contact me with any questions.

Colorful Wishes,

Mrs. Osborn, Family Support

EPS and SLE cell phone policy: What families/students need to know EPS and SLE cell phone policy: What families/students need to know

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Did you know Everett Public Schools implemented our cell phone policy and procedure in 2019? The policy, which is designed to support an engaging learning environment, applies to cell phones as well as all personal electronic devices (PEDs) such as earbuds and smartwatches. Below is a breakdown of what families and students need to know as we start the school year.

At Silver Lake Elementary:

  • During the hours of 8:50a.m. to 3:30p.m. (or respective dismissal time): Cell phones/PED will be turned off and strored in backpacks. Students should not use these personal devices during the school day.

  • Communicating with your child during the school day: If a student needs to contact a parent/guardian, they can do so through the classroom/school office phone. Likewise, parents/guardians can call the office for any urgent messages.

Disciplinary action: If a cell phone/PED is seen or used during the day, school staff will hold it in the office where a parent or guarding will need to pick it up during office hours. Repeated violations may lead to further consequences.

Special accommadations will be made if a PED is part of a student's Individualized Education (IEP), 504 Plan, or Individual Health Care Plan (IHP).

ATTENDANCE ATTENDANCE

If your student is absent or tardy from school, please email the attendance office at sleattendance@everettsd.org to let us know the reason for the absence or tardy.

  • Absences must be reported (by email or note) within 30 calendar days after a student returns back to school, not including Holidays or weekends, in order to have the absence excused. Emails or notes turned in past the 30-day timeframe will be accepted; however, the absence is not excused and will be coded as such.
  • Automated attendance calls will be sent out daily. If your student will be absent or tardy you must notify the office before 9:15 a.m. If it is reported after this time you may receive the automated call.
  • Please view the Everett School District Attendance Procedure 3122P for more information (including definitions of absences).
  • Did you have a medical appointment for your child, or they were sick, and you brought them to the doctor? If so, make sure to ask for a medical note from the provider. Email or bring the note to the attendance office so those absences can be coded as a medical note excused absence.
  • Please fill out a prearranged absence form if your student will be going on vacation/traveling or will miss school for an extended period of time. As per district policy, the principal or designee may excuse up to five (5) school days for a prearranged absence per student each school year.
