WhatNot!

Message From the Principal
Dear Wildwood Families,
October is here! That means it is time for me to provide information on two important events in the life of our community-The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill and Halloween.
On October 16th, we will join with schools in our district and across the state to participate in the Great Shakeout. This event allows us to practice for an earthquake to ensure that we are as prepared as possible. After the drill is announced over the loud speaker, students will take cover under desks. Then, an evacuation will be announced and classes will line up on the blacktop. At that time, our staff will do what we would do in the case of an actual earthquake, assuming positions on teams which would be able to respond to different situations in the aftermath of the earthquake. Most of our students have done this in the past and we will be sure to equip all of our students with the knowledge they need to feel ready for this drill.
Halloween is right around the corner! I hope that you will all come out and join us on Friday, October 31st for our Annual Wildwood Avenue Halloween Parade. The parade is scheduled to start at 9 AM. Grab your coffee compliments of the Wildwood Parents Club (THANK YOU!) and find a spot along Wildwood Avenue to view your favorite people. Please keep in mind that the street will be closed during the parade.
A few reminders for the day:
Students can wear their costumes to school for the parade, but they’ll change into regular clothes after the parade to keep the day running smoothly. If students can wear their costume over their clothes, that is great. If not, they should bring their clothes for the day in a bag.
Please make sure costumes are safe and appropriate for school. We ask that there be no masks or props (especially weapons) as part of the costumes, to ensure everyone has a fun and safe experience.
Please consider the impact a costume depicting an ethnic/racial/cultural group can have on others, including making people feel unsafe and/or disrespected. If your child wants to dress-up as a particular person or character from a story or movie, who is not of his or her same ethnic, racial, or cultural group, think about how your child can do so without using things like “ethnic” wigs, face/skin paint, but rather with the use of obvious costumes to capture the spirit of that character or person.
Please reflect on what it means to depict a culture or race even for a day-- because for many people it’s not just a costume, it is part of their identity. Even if your child is part of the group of people the costume is intended to represent, it is helpful to ask if the costume is perpetuating a negative stereotype.
Consider that a costume meant to be funny because it is making light of an ethnic or racial group is most likely a caricature, and thus inappropriate.
I look forward to a fun morning of celebrating our students and our school community on October 31st!
As always, thank you for all that you do to support this school community,
Amy Fry

Traffic Safety - Volunteers Needed
To support safe morning drop-offs, the WPC Safety Committee has created a SignUp Genius for those able to give 15-20 minutes of their time as traffic volunteers at morning drop-off. Sign up here!
Specifically, the ask is to: 1) don an orange vest and motion to drivers to pull forward as far as possible, and 2) open the car door to help escort the students into school.
Lending your helping hand at morning drop-off will go a long way toward keeping traffic run smoothly and pleasantly. It’s a great way to start the school day!

1. Sign up to Volunteer! We need help setting up the actual fair, operating the register during book fair hours, and packing up at the end. We rely heavily on volunteers to make this happen, so please sign up if you can! Sign up here.
2. Remember our teachers: At the fair, there will be each teacher’s wish list set out. While you’re at the fair picking out books for your child, please purchase a book from your teacher’s wish list! There will be labeled teachers’ bins to place the paid books inside.
3. eWallet: If you’d like to not worry about cash or credit cards at the fair, a great option is to set up an e- wallet online. You simply add funds and/or invite family to contribute. Grandparents love to donate towards books! This is a great option if you want your child to stop by the fair on their own after school. At the time of checkout, the eWallet account can be looked up on the register and used towards one’s purchase. Set it up through the book fair webpage.
4. Catch a "read aloud" with Ms. Ludmer on Wednesday 10/22 at 6:30 pm! Our Head Librarian, Ms. Ludmer, will be reading a lively piece for all to enjoy. The reading will most likely be outside in the courtyard so please dress accordingly! Cookies and milk will be passed around!
Stay updated through the Book Fair webpage.

Belonging Committee
Happy Filipino Heritage Month! In October we honor the history, culture, and contributions of Filipino Americans in the United States. Filipino folks started landing in the continental U.S. on October 18, 1587, primarily as enslaved peoples, prisoners and ship crew. Celebrating this rich culture and legacy in October, and throughout the year, helps to remind our entire community to recognize and honor the gifts that generations of Filipino Americans continue to share. Whether you cook a delicious chicken adobo for dinner one night, visit the latest showcase of Filipino culture at the Oakland Museum of California this month or learn more about events happening in and around the Bay Area in October, how might you choose to celebrate this month with your friends and neighbors?
