Happy Friday!

This week flew by, maybe the little bit of cooler weather helped things move more quickly. It was great seeing the kids at Bear Crawl on Friday too! Thanks for all the donations and support of our school throughout the fundraiser. Remember, there is no school for students on Monday September 21st.

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Sincerely, The 6th Grade Teachers

Battle of the Books

We're excited to invite your child to join Pine Lane's Battle of the Books (BOTB) club this year! BOTB is a team-based reading competition designed to build literacy skills, foster a love of reading, and encourage friendly collaboration among students. Participants read a curated list of books together as a team, then compete against other teams by answering questions about the content—similar to a quiz bowl format. It's a wonderful opportunity for students in grades 3-6 to strengthen comprehension and critical thinking skills while making new friends who share their enthusiasm for reading. The club meets every Monday morning from 8:00-8:55 AM, and the cost to participate is $30. We'll be hosting a Parent Info Meeting on September 8th at 8:00 AM in the North Library to share more details about the program, expectations, and how you can support your child throughout the season. We hope you'll join us!

Math - Ms. Simon

Kodiak Bears, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears

Students are loving fractions! This week we covered the basics of multiplying and dividing fractions. Next week we will dive deeper into division of fractions. The following week will be review and the Topic 1 Assessment, on September 30th.

Polar Bears

Students took their Topic 1 Assessments on Tuesday. Corrections were Wednesday in class and students were able to retake parts of the test they missed the first go around to better their score. Grades for this test will be re-released in google classroom over the weekend. Next week we will move into rational numbers.

Reading - Ms. Eliason

Students have been learning about plagiarism and how to appropriately cite direct quotes and paraphrases in their writing when responding to reading. We also continued to work on finding the central idea and supporting details of a text and object pronouns. Next Friday, we will be wrapping up informational reading from Unit 1 on Friday with the unit assessment. When you talk with your kids at home, you can be asking them about what they are reading at school or for fun, and ask what it's mostly about and how they know that as a way to support their learning.

Writing - Mr. Crump

This week in writing we dove into the mechanics of an explanatory/informational essays and on Thursday we took a step towards creating our author's voice by practicing starting our writing with a hook. Almost everyone was able to come up with four different ways to start their essay, which is crucial in grabbing the reader's attention.

Next week we are going to be outlining, writing our essays, and hopefully practice peer editing and revising next Friday!

Science & Social Studies - Ms. Hines

In Social Studies this week, students wrapped up their learning on geography. They picked places in the Western Hemisphere to research. Students then used the five themes of geography to create a presentation on their chosen place. It has been really fun getting to see their interests and creativity while they've been working on this project!

On Friday, we took our Unit 1 Assessment on Geography. If your student was absent, please ensure they talk with Ms. Hines about finding a time to take this assessment.

Classroom Store Classroom Store

Our students will be using ClassBank this year, which is a digital classroom economy platform. At the end of each week, students will have the opportunity to purchase things with the money they earn from our classroom stores. Due to this, the 6th Grade Teachers are looking for items (candy, chips, fruit, fidgets, snacks, and little trinkets) to stock our classroom stores.

If you are able, please send items in with your students this week, or throughout the year!
