Hardman's Happenings

Hello Oak Hill Families!

Happy almost Valentine’s Day! This is a friendly reminder to those that may need it, Valentine’s Day is Saturday! 😀I hope you are able to spend some quality time celebrating the special people in your life this weekend. It’s hard to believe we are already in the middle of February. January felt especially long with all of the ice, cold temperatures, and snow, yet here we are! Hopefully, we begin to see some spring-like weather soon and avoid any more winter weather that could cause school delays or cancellations.

Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday, February 16, in observance of Presidents Day. A link to the 2025–26 school year calendar is included for your reference. In December, the OHUSC School Board also approved the 2026–27 school year calendar, which is linked as well.

We recently reached the midterm of the third quarter, and you should have received an automated phone call notifying you that midterm reports are available in Skyward. To view midterm grades, log in to your Skyward Family Access account, click on the Grading tile on the screen. If the tiles don’t appear when you log in, click on the menu in the top left, scroll down and click on grading, and then click on grading again when the next column appears. If you have more than one child and they don’t all show up on the screen, you can select each student at the top of the screen or scroll down to view additional students. Midterm grades are listed in the M3 column. The grade shown in the Q3 column reflects your child’s current grade, including assignments completed after the midterm. The midterm grade does not appear on the students report card so there is time to get that grade up before report cards come out if that grade is lower than expected.

If you have questions about your child’s overall grade or a specific assignment, please start by talking with your child about their progress. If questions remain, we encourage you to reach out to the teacher for clarification. Communication between home and school is essential to student success, and regularly checking Skyward is a great way to stay informed about grades and assignment completion.

Thank you for your support and patience as we have navigated challenging winter weather. Please know that every weather-related decision involves careful consideration and planning by our team. I understand how inconvenient last-minute changes can be for families, and while my goal is always to communicate as early as possible, unpredictable conditions sometimes make that difficult. Your continued support is greatly appreciated and plays an important role in helping our school grow and improve every day. Thank you!

Yours in Education,

Sheri Hardman
OHUSC Superintendent

Freddy Fever was IN THE HOUSE at Sweetser Elementary!

Our students had an absolute blast, and even more importantly, they walked away with a powerful message:

Never be a bully

Always be kind

Smiling can change someone’s entire mood

Make healthy choices

And always do your very best

The energy was high, the smiles were big, and the message was exactly what our kids needed to hear.

Swayzee News

❤️ Kindness Month at Swayzee
February is the perfect month to focus on kindness, compassion, and looking for the good in one another. Our students continue to grow not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. Small acts—holding a door, inviting someone to sit with you, encouraging a friend—make a big difference in our school culture.

We encourage families to join us in reinforcing kindness at home. When school and home work together, amazing things happen.

Indiana Weather (Still Doing Its Thing)

If January was confusing, February said, “Hold my hot chocolate.”

We will continue to go outside for recess as long as the real feel is 20° or above. That means coats, hats, gloves, and yes… pants that reach the ankles are still necessary. We admire the bravery of the “shorts in February” crowd, but we would also like them to retain feeling in their knees.

Please also remember that during fire drills or emergency evacuations, students may need to be outside for extended periods of time. Proper winter gear helps keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Your partnership keeps our Eagles warm and fully thawed.

📚 Academic Focus & Growth

As we move deeper into the second semester, our students continue to show growth in reading, math, and across content areas. They have handled iLearn Checkpoints with maturity and determination, and we are proud of the effort we are seeing daily in classrooms.

This time of year is where we often see tremendous academic gains. The routines are established, expectations are clear, and students are building confidence in their abilities.

We encourage students to:

  • Read nightly

  • Practice math facts

  • Stay organized

  • Ask questions when they need help

Growth doesn’t happen by accident—it happens through consistent effort. And our Eagles are working.

💛 Looking Ahead

February is full of learning, growth, and (hopefully) slightly fewer snow days. As we continue through the second half of the school year, I am reminded how fortunate we are to be part of such a supportive and caring community.

The year may bring challenges, but it also brings opportunity. Opportunity to stretch. Opportunity to grow. Opportunity to celebrate the big and small victories along the way.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for trusting us with your children each day. Swayzee Elementary is special because of the people who fill it—students, staff, and families alike.

One Team. One Dream.

💛💙

At the same time, she demonstrates impressive maturity. When faced with challenges or adversity, Deborah handles them with grace and a positive attitude. She reflects, adjusts, and keeps moving forward—an incredible trait for someone her age.

He is always on top of his assignments, staying organized and prepared for class each day. Whether the task is challenging or routine, Hoyt approaches it with focus and determination. During class time, he remains attentive and on task, making the most of every learning opportunity. His ability to stay engaged and committed sets a powerful example for his peers.

What truly stands out about Hoyt is his tenacity. When something feels difficult, he doesn’t give up. Instead, he leans in, asks questions, and keeps pushing forward until he understands. That kind of perseverance builds not only academic strength, but character as well.

Hoyt’s steady determination, positive attitude, and willingness to grow make him a role model in our school community. We are incredibly proud of the progress he continues to make and the leadership he demonstrates each day.

Congratulations, Hoyt! 💙💛

George and Joe - Swayzee Staff Members of the Month

George & Joe – Custodial Dream Team

When the temperatures drop, the work inside our building ramps up — and that’s where George and Joe quietly shine.

Winter in Indiana doesn’t just bring snow days and chilly mornings… it brings mud-caked boots, salty footprints, slushy entryways, dripping coats, and all the things that try their hardest to undo a clean hallway. And yet, somehow, our building continues to look welcoming, safe, and well cared for every single day.

That doesn’t happen by accident.

George and Joe put in the extra effort during these cold weather months — staying ahead of the mess, keeping floors safe and dry, managing the constant battle against salt buildup, and making sure classrooms and common areas are ready for learning the next morning. Their work may happen behind the scenes, but its impact is front and center.

Because of them:

  • Our hallways stay clean and safe.

  • Our classrooms remain inviting places to learn.

  • Our staff and students can focus on teaching and learning — not puddles and footprints.

They take pride in our building, and it shows. Even when winter tries its best to track itself inside, George and Joe work tirelessly to make sure Swayzee still feels like home.

We are incredibly grateful for their dedication, work ethic, and care for our school community.

Congratulations, George and Joe — we are lucky to have you! 👏🦅

Greetings from Oak Hill Junior High

There have been many exciting activities and accomplishments at Oak Hill Junior High during the first month of the 2025-26 spring semester. The staff and students have been working hard and it’s showing both in academics and in the students’ extra-curricular activities.

Oak Hill High School will continue to have tutoring available for JH students after school on Tuesdays from 3:15pm to 4:15pm. Tutoring will be located in room 205 (Mrs. Lorona’s classroom) at the high school. Students should report to the high school office and Mrs. Lorona will take them to her classroom. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to receive academic enrichment or to get help understanding certain topics that may be hindering academic growth in the classroom. Please contact the JH main office if you would like to sign your child up.

This is also an early reminder that ILEARN testing will be here before we know it. ILEARN is tentatively scheduled to occur on April 14th and April 15th for English and only one testing day for Math this year on April 21st. More information about ILEARN will be in the next newsletter. The Oak Hill Junior High staff looks forward to the continuing success of its students this semester. Parents may contact Shawn Means, the JH principal, at 765-395-3341 or by email at shawnme@ohusc.k12.in.us if you ever have any questions concerning your children.

Here are some of the activities, achievements, and information since the start of the spring semester.

Oak Hill Junior High Art Department and Purdue Bug Bowl

The Oak Hill Junior High Art Department received a VIA grant toward the end of the 1st semester which has allowed it to be able to add quite a bit of interesting Entomological Visuals to inspire our students. This includes new posters, real bugs encased in resin, and even live and edible insects. This is already helping to inspire the students towards Purdue's Bug Bowl Art Competition which is in April. The students are to select, research, and illustrate a bug of their choice. The top 25-30 pieces will be entered into Purdue’s Bug Bowl competition. They are hoping to perform well against other schools in and around central Indiana. a bug of their choice, research the bug which will occur later this spring. Recently, the junior high students were also allowed to sample bug cuisine if they chose to do so. They were able to eat meal worms that came in a variety of flavors. Currently, the JH Art Department’s live bugs include Painted Lady Butterflies, that will hopefully be flying around the room soon and Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches.

Beyond school, Cooper is heavily involved in his church community. He regularly helps teach Sunday school to elementary students and actively attends youth group meetings, demonstrating his sense of service and responsibility.

I am also proud to share that Cooper plans to join the National Honor Society once eligible, further highlighting his academic and personal excellence.

Cooper has been making a genuine effort to improve his behavior both inside and outside of school, and I truly appreciate that this positive change has been recognized. Stephanie Strange - Staff Member of the Month

It is an honor to nominate Stephanie Strange for Teacher of the Month. She is an educator who embodies the rare combination of academic mastery, selfless service, and genuine heart. Her impact stretches far beyond the walls of her classroom, touching nearly every aspect of our school culture.

Stephanie possesses a profound command of all areas of mathematics, but her true skill lies in her ability to make complex concepts accessible. She doesn't just teach math; she cultivates excellence. Her students don't just pass—they thrive under her high expectations and steady encouragement.

Her dedication is visible long before and after the school bell rings:

  • Early Mornings: She is consistently one of the first in the building, opening her door to provide a quiet space and extra help for students before the day begins.

  • After-School Tutoring: She stays late to ensure that those who find math challenging are provided one-on-one support.

Beyond academics, Stephanie is a pillar of our extracurricular life. Her leadership within the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and her involvement in various school workings demonstrate her commitment to the "whole student."

It is common to see a constant stream of students stopping by her door just to say hello or seek a word of encouragement. They love her not just because she is a great teacher, but because she makes them feel seen and valued.

Stephanie is the definition of a "go-above-and-beyond" educator. She is a mentor, a leader, and a master of her craft. For her tireless work in the classroom and her unwavering support of our students’ spiritual and personal growth, she is more than deserving of this recognition.
