Redistricting Update
Good Afternoon,
We want to update you on the ongoing redistricting in Woburn Public Schools (WPS). At last week’s School Committee meeting, the committee voted on key guiding principles that will inform their decision-making process.
The School Committee has identified the following guiding principles for redistricting:
Pursue class size equity across all schools
Ensure demographic equity, particularly for high-needs students
Maintain sub-separate programs in their current buildings
Prioritize student proximity to neighborhood schools
Minimize student disruption while meeting district and city needs
Additionally, at last week’s meeting the committee discussed the possibility of utilizing modular classrooms for our Early Childhood Program (ECP). This proposal would consolidate the nine classrooms at Reeves and the four classrooms at Shamrock into a single location. While this is the preferred option at this time, other options will also be considered.
As background, an ECP Task Force—comprising teachers, school committee members, community members, and administrators—met multiple times this fall and recommended that the School Committee endorse a modular classroom option for the ECP. This approach would allow for a more comprehensive redistricting process while allowing time for the construction of a new school that includes an ECP. This option is not without cost and effort. The School Committee did support this as the preferred option, and we will continue to have conversations with the elected city officials regarding this choice.
Please note that all of the schools have a caregiver representative that is on the redistricting advisory committee, and they will be able to assist you with any questions that you may have. Also, the principals will include updates in their weekly newsletters to you.
All of the presentations and additional information can be found on our Woburn Public School website regarding the redistricting under the “latest news.”
Thank you.
