Dear 6th Grade Parents/Guardians,

As we move into this week, I want to provide a few helpful tips to make your 5-minute Parent-Teacher Conference as effective and valuable as possible. I know how busy schedules can be, but taking a few minutes to prepare will ensure a productive conversation about your child’s progress and any areas where they may need support.

Tips for a Successful Parent-Teacher Conference:

  1. Review your child's recent work: Take a look at any recent assignments or assessments your child has completed by logging onto their Google classroom. This will give you an idea of their strengths and where they may be struggling.

  2. Set goals: Think about what you'd like to discuss during the conference. Are there specific areas of your child's academic performance or behavior you'd like to focus on? What do you hope to accomplish from this meeting?

  3. Questions to guide the conversation:

    • How is my child progressing in class academically and socially?
    • Are there any areas where my child could use additional support or challenges?
    • What are some strengths you have noticed in my child's learning and behavior?
    • How can I support my child’s growth at home?

Update from Last Week’s 6th Grade Town Hall:

Last week, we held a town hall meeting where we introduced the acronym R.I.S.E. and discussed how students can apply these principles to manage emotions, communicate effectively, and solve problems. Here’s a brief recap:

  • R - Regulate: Students are encouraged to regulate their emotions by using a "reflection spot" in the classroom or notifying their teacher when they need space to regroup.

  • I - I Statements: We’re teaching students to express their feelings by using "I statements" instead of blaming others. For example, instead of saying "You made me angry," they are encouraged to say, "I feel upset when this happens because I need to focus."

  • S - Synchronize: Next town hall, we’ll dive deeper into "S," which means synchronizing or finding a common understanding. We want students to work through conflicts by listening and trying to see things from other perspectives.

  • E - Elevate: If students are unable to resolve an issue on their own, they are taught to elevate the situation to an adult (teacher, counselor, social worker, or administrator) who can provide assistance.

We are excited to continue working on these skills with the students to help them grow in emotional intelligence and communication.

Thank you for being such an integral part of your child's education. We look forward to seeing you at the conference and hearing your thoughts and questions!

Warm regards,

Ms. Brunson

Morning Mentors Morning Mentors

Nichols Middle School is offering a free morning tutoring program
for all interested students called Morning Mentors. Nichols staff and Northwestern students will provide tutoring in all subject areas. This is a great opportunity for students to be provided with homework help, re-teaching of lessons and general study skills. Acceptance into the program is a two fold - first come, first served basis along with a continuous attendance expectation.

Sessions will be held at Nichols Middle School, in the library, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They began on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025. Sessions will run from 7:15-7:50 am. Light breakfast snacks will be provided free of charge. Students may also get breakfast from the cafeteria and bring it to the program. We are currently accepting seven students per day and due to the limited space, we are also limiting each student to one day per week. We ask that parents speak to their child(ren) and classroom teachers to determine exactly how much support is required. Please keep in mind, our goal is to serve as many students as possible.

Learning through Collaboration in ELA Learning through Collaboration in ELA

The Graffiti Wall Activity

It was interactive and allowed students to express their thoughts, ideas, and reflections in a collaborative and visually engaging way that fostered teamwork.

We are lucky to be part of such a strong and cohesive team. It’s not every day that you get to work with such talented, driven, and supportive colleagues—and it makes all the difference in our students' learning!
