Providence Hall High School
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
WEEKLY UPDATE
As we head into another busy and exciting week at Providence Hall, we’re happy to share a few important updates and highlights. The schedule change window has officially closed, and while we do have an assembly this week, it will not be a spirit week. Looking ahead, the Sweethearts Dance is just two weeks away, with more information included in this newsletter.
We also want to highlight an exciting new support opportunity from our Math Department. Tuesday & Saturday help sessions are now being offered for students working on credit recovery math packets as well as for those who may be struggling in their current math classes. This is a tremendous opportunity for students to get extra help early in the quarter, stay on track, and avoid the stress of trying to catch up later.
We’re also excited to celebrate upcoming events such as Girls Basketball Senior Night and the Dance Concert. Be sure to read on for full details on everything happening at PHHS.
BOUNCING BACK FROM FAILURE
Failure is unavoidable, and it is one of the most powerful ways students learn. Setbacks such as a lower grade, a missed opportunity, or a mistake in practice can feel uncomfortable, but that discomfort is part of growth. Teens who are allowed to experience failure and its natural consequences develop grit, problem-solving skills, and confidence. As Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Learning to bounce back teaches students that failure is not something to fear or avoid, but something to learn from.
Resilience grows when students reflect instead of deflecting. After a setback, teens benefit from asking what went wrong, what they can control, and what they will try next time. Separating identity from outcome is critical. A poor result does not define a student, but avoiding responsibility can prevent growth. Setting a “next attempt” goal helps turn failure into forward momentum rather than frustration. Facing the outcome honestly builds maturity and confidence far more than escaping it.
Families play an important role in how students experience failure. While it is natural to want to protect teens from disappointment, stepping in too quickly to fix problems or assign blame often removes the opportunity to learn. Allowing students to face appropriate consequences helps them develop accountability and resilience. Sharing your own failures, asking reflective questions, and resisting the urge to intervene sends a powerful message that mistakes are not emergencies. They are opportunities. When students are supported, not rescued, they learn that failure is data, not a definition.
TIPS FOR STUDENTS, PARENTS, & GUARDIANS
Students, Try This:
Allow yourself to feel disappointed without giving up
-
Reflect on what went wrong and what you can control
-
Own your part in the outcome
-
Set a clear goal for your next attempt
-
Remember that failure is part of growth, not a reason to stop trying
Parents & Guardians, Try This:
Resist the urge to immediately fix or blame others
-
Allow natural consequences
-
Ask “What did you learn?” instead of “Who’s at fault?”
-
Share examples of your own failures and lessons learned
-
Reinforce that growth comes from facing challenges, not avoiding them
Please take a moment to review this week's Principal's Update, as it includes several important updates.
Choose to have a great week, Patriots!
