Note from the Counseling Department

2nd Grade Parents -

The Children's Advocacy Center of Rockwall County will be coming in the next few weeks to provide lessons for our 2nd and 5th Grade students. These lessons are in accordance with Senate Bill 9.

Senate Bill 9 requires schools to educate students on the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. Senate Bill 9 is Opt In only, meaning students will only receive the lesson if their parent/guardian opts in to receive it.

The resource utilized to meet these state requirements is the Monique Burr Foundation and lessons will be provided by the Children's Advocacy Center of Rockwall County. MBF Child Safety Matters® is a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum for elementary school students in grades K-5. The program educates and empowers children and all relevant adults with information and strategies to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all types of abuse, and digital abuse dangers." You can find more information at the link below:

https://mbfpreventioneducation.org/why-use-our-programs/mbf-child-safety-matters/

The following topic areas will be covered in the 2nd grade lessons:

Lesson 1:

  • Understanding Safe/Unsafe People such as strangers

  • Types of Abuse (if someone says not nice words, hits you)

  • Private Body Parts (no one should see, touch, or take pictures of bathing suit parts-where a bathing suit covers)

  • How to get away from someone who makes you feel unsafe

  • Safety Tips

Lesson 2:

  • How to be an Upstander (being kind/helping others)

  • Bullying (in person and online)

  • Digital Safety (not sharing information on games or apps)

A Google Form was sent to your email last week (those on file in Qmlativ) to confirm your "opt in" and "opt out" status. Please ensure you have completed this form before Sept. 16th. Those on the original "opt in" list with remain on it unless otherwise noted.

Attendance Procedures

After each absence please send in a paper note or email to Heather Wadsworth at heather.wadsworth@rcisd.org.

5 days unexcused absence - parents will have to sign an attendance contract

7 days unexcused absence - parents will have to attend an attendance committee meeting

10 days unexcused absence - truancy will be filed with the county

Please send in those notes so that we can get those unexcused absences changed to excused! At this age attendance is not a student responsibility but a parent responsibility so please ensure your children are at school when they are healthy!

At Scott we SHINE

Students will have the opportunity to earn SHINE slips again this year! When they earn them the student will go on a bingo board. When that BINGO has 15 in a row those students will earn a prize and the BINGO board will start over. So - the more SHINE slips you earn the better your chances!
