Welcome Back to School!
Dear Hedgesville Elementary Parents and Caregivers;
As we move further into the final stretch of the school year, we are proud of the hard work our students have shown and remain committed to supporting their continued growth and success. This is an important time to stay focused, maintain strong routines, and finish the year on a positive note.
Please also mark your calendars: i-Ready End-of-Year (EOY) testing will take place next week, from April 27 through May 8. This assessment helps us measure student growth and guide future instruction. We encourage students to get plenty of rest, arrive at school on time, and do their very best each day. Your support at home truly makes a big difference in their success!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support throughout the school year. By working together, we can ensure a strong and successful finish for all of our students. If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school.
Warmly,
Jacqueline Orrence
Principal

Evacuation Drill
During the last month of school, Hedgesville Elementary will be conducting a whole-school evacuation drill, weather permitting. This drill provides an important opportunity for students and staff to practice moving safely and efficiently to a designated location in the event of an emergency.
Practicing these procedures helps ensure that everyone is prepared to respond calmly, quickly, and safely if the need arises. We appreciate the continued support of our families and community as we work together to keep HES a safe and secure place to learn and grow.
Purple-Up Spirit Week-April 20-24
In recognition of the Month of the Military Child, our school will be celebrating Purple Up spirit week to honor and support the many students and families connected to military service. This week provides a special opportunity for our school community to show appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions made by military children and their families.
Each day will feature a different theme for students and staff to participate in. On Monday, April 20, we will begin with Military Monday, where students are invited to wear a shirt representing their favorite branch of the military, such as the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, or Space Force. On Tuesday, April 21, we will celebrate Crazy Camo Day, encouraging everyone to wear camouflage clothing. Wednesday, April 22 will be Red, White, and Blue Day, when students and staff can wear these patriotic colors to show support for our military families.
The celebration will continue on Thursday, April 23 with Purple Up Day, a day dedicated to wearing purple in honor of military children. Purple represents all branches of the military and symbolizes the strength and resilience of military families. We will conclude the week on Friday, April 24 with Red Day, when students and staff are encouraged to wear red to remember and recognize those who are deployed.
We look forward to seeing our school community come together throughout the week as we celebrate and support our military-connected students and families. Thank you for helping us recognize and honor the important role military children play in our community.

An Evening of Arts and Culture: April 28
Celebrate our second graders’ creativity at our Evening of Arts and Culture. From 4:30–5:30 pm, on April 28, students in Ms. Exline, Ms. Wareham, and Ms. Zimmerman’s classes will present a curated art show featuring a variety of pieces they’ve created this semester—paintings, drawings, sculptures, and more. Student artists will be on hand to share what inspired their work and the techniques they were taught by Ms. Hostetter. The Art Show will be held in the Art Room and the Hedgesville Art Gallery, located on the 2nd floor directly outside of the art room. Parents, please enter through the front door of the school.
Then, at 6:00 pm in the gym, it is time for our Spring Concert, featuring performances by Mr. Darr, Ms. Pyne, Mr. Robinson, and Ms. Underwood’s classes as directed by Mr. Youngblood. It’s a wonderful chance to see your children shine in both the visual and performing arts.
All families are warmly invited—come celebrate your child’s hard work and creativity!
Financial Literacy Night: April 30
Telamon will be hosting Money Smarts for the Whole Family on April 30 from 5:00–7:00 PM at Martinsburg South Middle School (Cafeteria), located at 150 Bulldog Blvd in Martinsburg.
This engaging event is designed to help families build essential financial skills. Participants will learn practical budgeting strategies, how to manage money effectively, and gain a stronger understanding of credit—along with many other helpful financial tips.
Childcare will be provided for school-aged children, who will participate in fun, age-appropriate activities focused on the value of money, including creating their own simple budgets.
All registered attendees will receive free pizza and refreshments, generously provided by Telamon and the Eastern Panhandle Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Proclamation Day: May 1
On May 1st, HES will be celebrating Proclamation Day, an important milestone in our school’s journey to be recognized as a CFWV Champion of College Access and Success.
Proclamation Day is designed to help students begin thinking about their future by building early awareness of postsecondary education and career opportunities. Throughout the day, each class will be visited by one of the school counselors to hear about the importance of career planning, higher education, and specialized training. Students will also sign a pledge committing to the pursuance of higher education, training, or military service beyond high school.
Our goal is to inspire students to start exploring their interests and to understand that there are many exciting paths available to them. We look forward to sharing this meaningful experience with your child.
PTO Meeting: May 5
Please join us for our final PTO meeting of the school year on May 5 at 5:00 PM in the school library. This meeting will include important updates, a look back at this year’s accomplishments, and a preview of plans and priorities for the upcoming school year. We will also hold voting for next year’s PTO officers. We encourage all families to attend and be part of supporting our school community.
