Students met local firefighters, learned about fire safety and prevention, and even got to try on real firefighter helmets and uniforms—though they were a bit big! The visit was a fun and memorable way to learn how firefighters help keep our community safe.

Sedro-Woolley School District joined schools across the state in celebrating Taste WA Day—an annual event highlighting Washington-grown foods. Students enjoyed meals made with ingredients from local farms, including fruit and yogurt parfaits featuring Grace Harbor Farms yogurt and berries from the Northwest Berry Coop. Elementary and middle school students also enjoyed beef soft tacos on tortillas made with organic whole wheat flour grown and milled in Royal City.

Schools across the district featured fresh produce from farms such as Viva Farms, Bellewood Farms, and Ralph’s Greenhouse. The celebration also marked the start of expanded local purchasing efforts by the SWSD Food Service Department, supported by a $48,000 WSDA Farm to School Purchasing grant for 2025–2027.

Jason Miller, editor and publisher of the Concrete Herald, recently made the first of two $300 donations to Sedro-Woolley High School’s Wood Production program to support the construction of countertop newspaper boxes. The second $300 donation will come later this school year.

The donations are in exchange for a total of 10 newspaper racks built by Dan Caldwell’s students—five were completed during the 2024–25 school year, and the remaining five will be built this year.

A longtime supporter of Career and Technical Education and a member of the journalism advisory board, Miller said, “I love these kind of collaborative projects, where everyone wins and everyone’s happy.”

The project gives students hands-on experience while meeting a real community need, creating a true win-win partnership.

Larkin Allen

Larkin Allen is the daughter of Donee and Wesley Allen.

Larkin has maintained a GPA of 3.89 while being highly involved at Sedro-Woolley High School throughout her high school years. She is a member of the National Honor Society, HOSA, is part of NHS Leadership, and was an assistant in sports medicine for three years. She was also on Cub Crew and a junior marcher.

Outside of school, Larkin enjoys watching football, being with family and friends, spending time with her dogs, volunteering, and traveling. If she took off on a trip today, she says that Maui, Hawaii would be her first destination! She has also gained valuable work experience in the medical field, getting her Certified Nursing Assistant license and volunteering at a local care center. She currently works as a Starbucks barista part-time.

After graduation, Larkin plans to attend college to pursue a medical career, ultimately becoming a Physician Assistant in family medicine.

Her favorite quote comes from Taylor Swift:

“No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.”

Larkin, Sedro-Woolley High School is a better place for the time that you have invested here. We are so excited for what’s next for you. Congratulations!

Isaac Oporto

Isaac Oporto is the son of Terra Oporto and David Oporto.

Isaac has maintained a GPA of 3.5 and stays very active at Sedro-Woolley High School. If there is something happening on campus, you will more than likely find Isaac there — taking pictures, providing support, or leading the charge! Isaac has natural leadership skills and has used them to serve the student body faithfully throughout his high school years. He is a member of student government, Yearbook, Varsity in Volunteerism, CAMP, and RISE.

Outside of school, Isaac enjoys volunteering, photography, graphic design, hiking, and travel. Hawaii and Italy are at the top of his list of destinations! Here in Sedro-Woolley, he has worked at the local Pioneer Marketplace as well.

After graduation, Isaac would like to attend WSU and major in either Project Management, Marketing, Graphic Design or Digital Media.

When asked who inspires him, Isaac says he really looks up to his parents, who he describes as hardworking, supportive, and funny. Isaac, it’s easy to see that you have those very same traits!

Thank you for all of the excellence and heart you have poured into our school and the Cub community. We are so proud of all you’ve accomplished. Congratulations!

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying

The district uses a reporting system for harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) through SafeSchools Alert. Students, parents and community members can report HIB and other unsafe behaviors anonymously through phone, text, email or web. Students, parents and community members should utilize SafeSchools Alert as it creates a record of the report, and each incident must be investigated. Visit https://swsd-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ to report an incident or use the alternative methods below.
