Mustang Update
Our FFA Chapter and their Advisors, Ms. Carrie Husband and Ms. Ella Pachta (Student Teacher) hosted the Northeast Kansas FFA Speech/Interview and Agronomy contest this past Wednesday! We had 30 FFA Chapters and over 200 competitors in our building during the day! Our FFA Chapter members and advisors are to be congratulated for organizing this event and really showing the pride we have in our building and programs at Valley Heights. A special thanks to our staff who assisted with the events. We received many compliments from those schools that were here. Not only did we host – but we competed! As a school, we placed 2nd overall among the 30 schools that were here. Individual results are as follows: Senior Prepared Speech – Lawson Stryker (3rd) and Kinsley Gillig (5th); Junior Prepared Speech – Kynadee Bishop (3rd) and Callie Schmidt (4th); Sophomore Prepared Speech – Klara McIntyre (9th) and Leah Steinfort (24th); Freshman Prepared Speech – Avery Bishop (10th). In Extemporaneous Speaking – Dawson Vermetten (2nd) and Jacob Vathauer (13th). In Employment Skills A – Kinsley Gillig (16th) and Employment Skills B – Josie Parker (2nd) and Caden Parker (18th). Great job Mustangs!
We are quickly wrapping up the winter sports season with the Junior High in the middle of the BVL Tournament at Clifton-Clyde and the high school squads looking at only three more home games and some away games left in the regular season! Be on the lookout for dates and times and come out to support our Mustangs!
As you know we had our first snow day of the year this past Monday! A lot goes into making the call when extreme weather makes it dangerous for our staff, students and bus passengers. We must look at the extreme temperature, snow and ice amounts, and of course, the road conditions of just not our highways and streets but our country roads as well. Weather predictions in Kansas are tough to call. I have personally seen days that start out with the sun shining and by 10:00 am the roads have become troublesome. I have also seen days where we call school off because of snow and by mid-afternoon the snow is already melting. The one thing we always keep in mind is the safety of our students and staff. Although there is the rare exception when we have a full snow day or an early release we will cancel all night activities and practice sessions. On the bright side, we are already one day closer to spring and warmer temperatures.
January has been School Board Appreciation month and as we wrap up the month of January we want to thank the members of the Board of Education for USD 498. They are Lisa Stryker, Jami Gillig, Luke Roepke, Scott Toerber, Jeremy Bachura, Dava Warders and Monte Shanks. We appreciate your support of our efforts in USD 498!
Go Mustangs!

🎓🎓🎓SENIOR CORNER🎓🎓🎓
Senior of the Week - Stella Martin
Gratitude
“The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for all that He, in His goodness, sends to us day after day,” by St. Gianna Beretta Molla is Stella’s favorite quote because it reflects her values. Stella Raye Martin was born on February 2, 2008 to Brent and Megan Martin. Stella was raised in Waterville, Kansas with her younger brother, Kalen. When asked who has impacted her life the most, Stella said, “My mom has had the biggest impact on my life because she has taught me to always put God first and everything else second. If God is at the center of your life, the rest will fall into place.” Stella’s greatest accomplishment was converting to Catholicism. One thing most people don’t know about Stella is that she’s really good at trap shooting.
Throughout Stella’s high school career she has been involved in FFA and FCA 4 years; Art Club and Softball 3 years; All School Play, KAY, NHS, and Mustang Mentor 2 years; and Volleyball 1 year. Stella has held many leadership positions the past four years that include, FFA Sentinel 1 year; FFA Vice President 1 year; Softball Captain 1 year; and FCA Leadership team 2 years. When asked what her favorite memory from high school was, she said “I will never forget sophomore homecoming when Ella Swearingen popped her grandpa's tire before the homecoming parade because she pulled over to get a part of the float that blew away in the wind.”
After high school Stella plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in Animal Science. In the next 10 years, Stella sees herself working in the animal industry and living on a ranch with her family. Stella's advice to underclassmen would be, “Stay on top of your work and don’t procrastinate.” When she leaves the Valley Heights community, she would like to be remembered for her kindness and willingness to help others.
