5/29/26

Dear Western families,

I am happy to report that our softball and boys' track team have taken home the Middle School Championship banner for another year. Our softball team beat Central 5 to 3 and our boys’ track team came out ahead of both Central and Eastern. Our baseball and girls' track teams put up a really, great fight but came up just short. We are proud of all the teams this spring and look forward to our continued success next year! Thank you to Mr. Bartoli, Mr. Darula, Mr. Hauer, Mr. Kalinski, Mr. Lipari, Ms. Powers, and Ms. Somers for leading and supporting our spring sports teams. Thank you, also, to Mr. Tarantino for all he does to organize and support our sports program at Western. His work with the other schools, bus company, referees/umps, coaches, players and parents makes our sports program outstanding. We truly have the best staff in town working with our student-athletes.

On a more serious note, I was able to be outside a few mornings this week at drop-off time, and it appears we have a lot more students arriving late to school. A LOT. We are going to have the students work right up to the end of school, so please continue to make arriving at school on time a priority. If everyone followed the procedures below, the line would move much faster:

  • Get to school before 8:00 and you will sail through.

  • Pull into the lot across the street and have your child cross at the crosswalk instead of waiting to pull up in front. Do not drop your child off on the main road at any time.

  • Make only a right turn out of the school. Many cars are trying to cross over to Henry Street, which also gets backed up, and this causes the line to slow down greatly.

  • Pull all the way up to the stop sign if you are the first one in line to stop.

I know we have less than a month left with the students, but I would really like to have enjoyable mornings where the drop-off line moves quickly and very few students are tardy. Please, please help me have good mornings!

Some of you have a child going to the Senior Prom tomorrow, like I do. Unfortunately, it is not looking like it will be a nice, sunny day with temperatures in the 70s. I think we are all pretty used to this by now, but I am praying the weather is good to us for all our special events in June.

I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Sincerely,

Suzanne

GPS End of Year Surveys

Parents and guardians were emailed and texted a reminder invitation today with a unique link for the annual Greenwich Public Schools Family Survey, with an extended deadline of Friday, June 5. Please take 2–3 minutes to share your confidential feedback to help shape the strategic plans for our school and GPS.

Look for an email with the subject line “Greenwich Public Schools Family Survey” (from sogolytics-edu). Check your spam folder if you do not find it readily in your inbox.

Hats For Hope Day on June 8th

On Monday, June 8th, we will be holding our annual “Hats for Hope” fundraiser to support the Yale New Haven Hospital. Students and stall are asked to wear hats (sun hats, silly hats, winter hats, baseball hats etc). Carla Lenschow, a sophomore at Greenwich High School, organizes this fundraiser. Her sister was treated for her leukemia blood cancer at the hospital and her family has a very special connection to the hospital. Students and staff are asked to bring a small donation along with wearing a hat. A link to donate on line will be sent next week.

Western’s Spring Art Show

Our final art show of the year did not disappoint! Our students displayed their talent through many different mediums, all that were quite impressive. Thank you to Ms. Hinkle, who spent hours making sure all her students’ best artwork was represented. Enjoy some pictures of the artwork displayed.

Multi-cultural Project in 6th Grade Consumer Science

The 6th graders in Ms. DeJesus’ Consumer Science classes just completed a Multi-cultural project that helped students to become skilled observers and analysts of other cultures. The project had students use research skills to gain understanding of the perspectives (attitudes, values), the practices (patterns of social interactions), and the products (e.g., food, books, games, etc) of a country they would like to visit and create a project to share what they learned, including significant contributions from their chosen culture. The end results for all classes were quite impressive, and below you will see the students in action during this project.

I wanted to share that registration for the Summer Weekend Meal Bag Program is open and can be delivered to your child at summer school. For children who are not attending a summer camp or summer school, we will have designated hub pick-up sites, in Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport.

Each child will receive one bag per week, and all children are welcome to participate and benefit from the program. Please note that this is a separate registration process from the regular school-year Weekend Meal Bag Program.

If your child will not be returning to Greenwich Public Schools next year, please fill out the GPS Withdrawal Form. While we hate to see you go, we do need to plan for next year as well as prepare for a smooth transition to your next school.
