Mindess School Weekly Update

January 23, 2026
Dear Mindess Families,
We wrapped up the week by coming together as a school community this morning for a whole-school assembly to officially kick off Kindness Week. It was a wonderful way to start this special week, and we are excited to continue highlighting kindness, empathy, and respect across our school. As part of the assembly, we shared a couple of videos with students, which you can find in our “Highlights” section below, and we invite you to take a moment to watch them with your child. As part of Kindness Week, we will also be celebrating with spirit days—please see the list below and join us in the fun!
Looking ahead, fifth-grade classes will begin lessons on puberty during the week of February 9. Fifth-grade classroom teachers will be sending additional information to families with more details.
i-Ready assessments will continue next week. If we experience a snow day on Monday, fifth-grade students will take the i-Ready Math assessment on January 29. Make-up testing will also take place on January 29 and 30 for students who were absent on their scheduled assessment day.
As a reminder, we do go outside for recess as long as the feels like temperature is not below 20 degrees. Please help your child be prepared for winter weather by sending them to school with boots, snow pants, gloves, hats, and a warm winter coat, so they can safely enjoy outdoor recess.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are looking forward to a week filled with kindness, school spirit, and meaningful learning. We hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday!
Warmly,
Kate Altman

Highlights From the Week!
We kicked off Kindness Week this morning (Friday) with a whole-school assembly. Our Student Council did an outstanding job presenting the purpose and importance of Kindness Week and setting a positive tone for the days ahead.
Below are two videos that were shared during the assembly. One was created by students in Lindsay Johnston’s fifth-grade class, and the other is a powerful short clip that I look forward to watching every year and wanted to share with you as well.
A Message from our Nurses!
Reminder from the Mindess Health Office
We have seen a significant increase in illnesses, including influenza and strep throat, this week.
To help keep our school community healthy, please check-in with your child each morning and keep your child home if they are showing signs of illness. Students should stay home if they have had any of the following symptoms in the last 24 hours:
Fever of 100.0°F or higher
Vomiting or diarrhea
Persistent cough or difficulty breathing
Sore throat, especially with fever
Rash accompanied by fever or behavior changes
Any illness that prevents them from participating comfortably in school activities
Please ensure your child is fever-free without medication and symptoms are improved for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
Thank you for helping us maintain a healthy environment for all students.

SEL Corner - January 2026
January SEL Lessons
January's SEL Theme of the month is Empathy. SEL lessons in the classroom focus on how to put yourself in other's shoes and recognize how they might be feeling. In third grade, kids are learning to look at facial expressions and body language to guess how someone might be feeling. In fourth grade, students are learning to related to the feelings of another by thinking about how they have felt in a similar situation. By fifth grade, students work on thinking not only about how someone else might be feeling, but also what they can do to improve situations around them. Our restorative circles this month focused on making New Year's Resolutions about classroom expectations- what they can do better to make school be successful for all. Empathy is one of the biggest skills we try to get all students to work on at this age.
