Irving Elementary Weekly Update
Week of August 10th
Principal Message
Irving Families,
Hard to believe that summer is almost over, and the new school year is just around the corner! We are excited to welcome our students back to Irving on Thursday, August 21st, for the first day of school. Please note, this will be a half-day, with dismissal at 11:30 AM.
To kick off the year with some fun, we invite you to our Back-to-School Picnic on Sunday, August 17th, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Proksa Park. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet other families, enjoy some outdoor activities, and find out who your child’s teacher will be for the year. If you're unable to attend, don’t worry! We will email teacher assignments soon after the event.
To our newest Irving kindergartners, we are especially excited to invite you to our "Bursting into Kindergarten" event on Monday, August 18th at 5:00 PM. We encourage parents to bring in their school supplies that evening. There will be a brief informational session, along with a chance to ask questions and explore the school. Plus, the children can enjoy some bubble playtime on the playground!
To make the start of the school year as smooth as possible, we’ll also be hosting a School Supply Drop-off for grades 1st–5th on Wednesday, August 20th, from 1:30 to 3:00 PM. This is a great time to meet your child’s teacher and drop off any supplies before the first day of school.
Preschool’s first day is Monday, August 25th. Preschool begins at 8:45 AM. Students enter through the gym/bus lane doors on 35th Street. Open houses will be held by appointment on August 21st and 22nd, with teachers scheduling these directly with families.
The front office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM until school starts. To ensure you receive the best service, please consider scheduling an appointment with Ms. Garcia or Mrs. Cordero by calling 708-795-2334 or emailing agarcia@bsd100.org or mcordero@bsd100.org.
We are eagerly anticipating the start of the new school year and can’t wait to welcome all of our students back to school. We know that for many parents, the first day drop-off can be a bittersweet moment, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!
Mr. Stachura
Upcoming Events
Mrs. Cordero
We’re excited to welcome Mayra Cordero as our new school secretary! Mrs. Cordero brings years of experience working as a secretary in various roles and is known for her warm and friendly personality. She’s no stranger to our school—her two children attended Irving and now go to Heritage, and she spent years volunteering with our PTO to help make our school community stronger. Mrs. Cordero and her family live nearby, and she cares deeply about Irving. We’re thrilled to have her on our team!
Libby, Our Therapy Dog
We are happy to share that Libby, Mrs. Toolan’s professional therapy dog, will be returning to Irving this school year! Libby is a beloved member of our school community, offering calm, comfort, and support to students throughout the building.
To ensure it’s safe for her to visit your child’s classroom, District guidelines require parent/guardian permission for students to interact with animals at school. This is because some students may have allergies, asthma, or other health needs.
Libby will be on campus regularly and may visit classrooms during the year. Please complete this PERMISSION FORM if your child can participate in activities with Libby.
Transportation
Bus Service begins on the first day for students in grades K-5. Bus transportation is provided to students who meet the criteria due to distance, hazard roads crossings or student needs. A new FORM must be completed yearly for all students. Please submit any bus forms to the school office. If you have any questions contact the transportation department at 708-303-4011.
Staff members will greet the buses and help students get to their designated lines.
Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures
Irving School experiences heavy traffic during arrival and dismissal. Parking is limited, and our streets are crowded with students and adults. To ensure a safe and efficient drop-off or pick-up, please arrive early.
Please refer to the photo below for our drop-off/pick-up procedures. It is essential that families use the 35th Street bus lane or park legally and walk their students to their designated lines. Always cross the street at marked crosswalks with a crossing guard. Students must never cross in the middle of the street.
When using the bus lane for drop-off/pick-up, please follow these guidelines:
- Direction: 35th Street is one-way eastbound from Clinton Avenue to Kenilworth Avenue. Please obey all signs and markings.
- Drop-off/Pick-up: Pull into the furthest available eastbound spot on 35th Street to allow students to exit or enter the vehicle.
- Student Readiness: Students should be ready to exit or enter the car immediately upon stopping.
- Walking Students: Adults cannot park in the bus lane to walk students to their lines. Please park your vehicle if you need to accompany your child.
- School Buses: School buses load and unload at the west end of the drop-off/pick-up area.
Thank you for your cooperation in following these procedures. Your efforts help keep all our students and families safe.
