Healthy Minute
BE KIND
February is a short and sweet suggestion from the SMS Health Office:
Be KIND. With so much negativity within the school walls, outside of school, on social media or in the news in general, it’s so easy to forget the basics. Spreading kindness has positive health benefits. Some simple ways to spread kindness include:
Be polite to peers and adults
Say hi to/make friends with students other than your usual friend group
Smile
Give compliments
Help others when they need help
Please Be Kind, you never know what another person is going through.

The HOPE Squad is coming to SMS!
This February, we are excited to bring the HOPE Squad to the Superior Middle School! The HOPE Squad has been at our high school for 5 years now and has had a very positive impact on the school as a whole. The HOPE Squad is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program that is made up of students who are nominated by their peers because they care about others, display naturally good listening skills and are trusted. The goal of the HOPE Squad is to increase inclusion and connectedness in schools by teaching students how to provide friendship, encouragement, and support for students who may be struggling, targeted for bullying or feel isolated.
Members of the HOPE Squad are NOT asked to act as counselors or therapists but are trained in how to refer peers to adults who can help. HOPE Squad members will attend weekly meetings here at school, where they will be be trained in suicide prevention, resilience, mental wellness, and anti-bullying. Students are also given opportunities to develop leadership skills by organizing and participating in school wide events and activities. Here at SMS, students who were nominated by their peers were invited to attend an informational meeting to learn more about the HOPE Squad on February 4th. We are looking forward to continuing to develop this program at our school!
