💉Blood Drive a Success!🩸
The Senior Class recently sponsored another American Red Cross Blood Drive held at Portsmouth West High School. Due to so many of our students, staff, and community members giving "the gift of life," the American Red Cross was able to use enough units to offer $1,000 in scholarships to this year's seniors. This is a first for PWHS and Mrs. Callihan and the senior class would like to thank all who contributed!
Intervention specialist Bill Hafer gave the gift of life!

👑Miss West 2025 Grace Lucas👸🏼
Congratulations to our new Miss West 2025 Grace Lucas! Rylee McDermott, Miss West 2024, "passed the sash" to Grace along with well wishes and encouragement on her upcoming journey in the Portsmouth River Days events and pageant. Here is Grace's introduction from Miss West 2025 herself:
Hi, everyone! Now that I am officially Miss West 2025, I would like to introduce myself: My name is Grace Lucas.
I am a junior at Portsmouth West High School. I am a member of the Beta Club, Key Club, and Varsity Cheerleading Squad. I also carry the presidential role in my school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter. Outside of school, you can find me anywhere that involves livestock; I am a member of Scioto County 4-H and part of their Junior Fair Board. I show pigs at the county and state level. I also have participated in jackpot shows throughout Ohio and other states. I even have a national show in Georgia under my belt buckle
I am so honored to be able to represent Portsmouth West in this year’s River Days Pageant. I can’t wait to share my journey here on my Facebook page — follow along! I am ready to add a set of heels to my closet, right next to my Muck boots.
Thank you to everyone who has already shown their support. I really appreciate it! Let’s go Portsmouth West!
— Grace

🏀Girls Basketball 🏀
PWHS girls basketball team ended their season this past week in the district finals. Finishing their season 14-10, the team loses one senior, Ava Potters. Potters said of her three year stint with this team, "It's been a great three years. My favorite memory is playing the former players in practice and now I'm one of them!" Underclassmen heavy this year, with only one senior and two juniors, the team will return next year in hopes of continuing the strong tradition of girls basketball at Portsmouth West.

🏀Boys Basketball🏀
PWHS boys basketball finished their season in the district semi-final game held at Jackson High School. They ended the season with a 12-12 record and will graduate three seniors: Jackson Geyer, Mason Parker, and Ashton Reynolds. All seniors wish the best of luck to their younger teammates. Parker encourages all upcoming players to never be late for practice. Geyer agrees and also warns, "For the love of God, don't miss practice!" Words of wisdom hopefully all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors remember.

The Discipline to Achieve
Published on May 14, 2024
“I learned to discipline myself to do things I didn’t want to do. Now, I also discipline myself to do things I love to do when I don’t want to do them.”
— Edward James Olmos
It’s a discovery most of us have made at some point in life: Setting goals is fairly easy, but achieving goals is much more challenging.
High achievers set clear goals — then stay focused on an action plan for achieving their goals. They demonstrate not only the decision to achieve, but also the discipline to achieve. They know that a decision without discipline will quickly fade when faced with the hard work that real achievement demands.
Decision minus Discipline = Good Intentions, Low Achievement
Decision plus Discipline = Good Intentions, High Achievement
Goal setting is actually fairly common. Unfortunately, the long-term discipline that sustains the hard work necessary to achieve goals is not common. The failure to sustain commitment and discipline is illustrated annually by the “resolutions” that are traditionally made on or around January 1.
You know how it goes. As the old year winds down and a new year begins, people make resolutions to accomplish goals or make changes they believe will improve their lives. However, despite the best of intentions, a great many resolutions are abandoned when people discover how much time and effort are required to change old habits or accomplish new things.
It’s not easy to get a parking place at the health club in January. The lot is packed and the gym is crowded with people with good intentions. But go back in February, and you can park anywhere you want, because many of those people have given up already. They lacked the discipline to follow through on their goal to get in shape.
Success is not the result of the initial decision to set a goal to achieve something; rather, success is the result of a journey guided by the day-to-day commitment and discipline to navigate through difficulties, discomfort, distractions, and disappointments.
Peak performers carefully determine what they want to accomplish and then focus their time and energy on the daily action necessary to achieve their goals. They understand fully the connection between the decision to accomplish something and the long-term commitment and discipline that sustain the hard work that actually produces results.
