May Focus: Field Trips & Career Connections

As we wrap up our final units and head out on end-of-the-year field trips, we have the perfect opportunity to hit MCDM Target 2: Academic Connections. By intentionally linking our trips to the 6 Michigan Career Zones, we show our K-5 students that what they learn in our classrooms is exactly what professionals use in the real world!

🗺️ Connect to the 6 Michigan Career Zones

Before you board the bus, ask your students which "Zone" they think they are visiting:

  1. Arts & Communication (Museums, Theaters, Libraries)

  2. Business, Management, Marketing & Technology (Offices, Retail, Banks)

  3. Engineering/Manufacturing & Industrial Technology (Construction sites, Factories)

  4. Health Sciences (Hospitals, Dentists, Labs)

  5. Human Services (Police/Fire stations, Government, Schools)

  6. Natural Resources & Agroscience (Farms, Zoos, Nature Centers, Water Treatment Facilities)

🔍 Field Trip "Career Detective" Tips

Help students see the Academic Connections while they explore:

  • The "Math in Motion" Moment: Point out someone using math. “Look at the cashier at the zoo—they are using the addition and subtraction we practiced this winter to make change!”

  • The Literacy Link: Have students look for "Job Signs." Every field trip site has instructions, safety manuals, or descriptions. Remind them that reading is a "power tool" for every career.

  • Ask a Pro: Encourage students to ask one worker: "How did what you learned in elementary school help you do your job today?"

📝 Post-Trip Reflection: Target 2 in Action

When you return, spend 10 minutes on a quick "Connection Reflection":

  • K-2: Draw a picture of a worker from the trip and one "school tool" they were using (like a pencil, a computer, or a ruler).

  • 3-5: Write a "Career Connection" sentence: "I saw a [Job Title] using [School Subject] to help them [Job Task]."

Each month I will share information highlighting a specific target and connecting activities to the targets.

🎯 Target 2: Academic Connections

Connect academic content to Michigan career zones and embed across curriculum.

Relevancy is the best engagement tool! By connecting our trips to the MCDM, we aren't just taking a break from the classroom—we're showing them why the classroom matters.

CAREER AWARENESS TIP OF THE MONTH CAREER AWARENESS TIP OF THE MONTH

Keep the Career Conversations Going Over the Summer!

Adding a "Home Connection" opportunity for over the summer is a great way to show parents that career awareness isn't just a school thing—it's a life thing!

In the Michigan Career Development Model, parents are key partners in helping kids move from Awareness (K-5) to Exploration (6-8).

Xello: Finishing Strong for the Year!

As we head into the final stretch of the school year, let’s help our students cross the finish line in Xello! Completing these tasks ensures every student in Muskegon County meets their career awareness targets.

Grades K-2: The Career Town Mystery

To finish the year strong, students should:

  • Visit their 2 Grade-Level Locations: Each grade has two specific spots in Career Town to explore.

  • Solve the Mystery: Complete at least one full round of Career Town (visiting all locations) to find the missing workers and solve the mystery!

Grades 3-5: Building the Profile

To be 100% complete, students need to:

  • Clear the "To-Do" List: Complete all tasks to build out their About Me profile (Interests, Skills, etc).

  • Complete Grade-Level Missions: Finish all interactive Missions assigned to their specific grade.

* I will be pulling final school year reports around mid May. Support your students in building their career awareness foundation by completing their grade level Xello tasks!
