Imagine 2030: Designing the Future Together
Strategic Plan Pillars
The Haslett Public Schools Board of Education approved the following strategic plan pillars on May 12, 2025, establishing the foundation for the district's direction through 2030.
The pillars emerged from an extensive community engagement process involving over 365 teachers, families, and community members who participated in more than 30 meetings across the district. Students played a significant role, with more than 300 providing direct input. Additional feedback came from fall 2024 surveys that gathered over 35,000 ratings from more than 1,000 stakeholders on the district's strengths and challenges.
The Imagine 2030 Strategic Planning Task Force, established by Board resolution in January 2025, guided the development process. This diverse group included teachers, administrators, Board members, parents, and students who worked together to synthesize community input into key priority areas.
These newly approved pillars will inform the development of specific strategies and implementation pathways in our ongoing pursuit of educational excellence. The Board will vote on the complete strategic plan on July 21, 2025.
Salmon in the Classroom: Connecting Students to the Outdoors
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources' Salmon in the Classroom program offers a unique, hands-on learning experience where students raise salmon from eggs and are responsible for their care and eventual release into the wild. Camden Cantu, a third-grader at Ralya Elementary, shared his excitement: "We got to see the fish grow up through all their stages. We had class with them!"
This program is a valuable tool for teaching across multiple subjects. In Ms. Humanchuk’s class, students engaged in creative writing by composing pieces such as a "Welcome to Our Classroom" letter and a "Goodbye Fish Wish." It also provided plenty of opportunities for nonfiction reading, science observations, journaling and connects perfectly with our state of Michigan social studies focus. As third-grader Lila Revilla put it, “Next year’s class will love it. It’s fun, and we learn lots of facts!”
The goal of this program is to reconnect students with nature and inspire them to become the next generation of environmental stewards and fishers of the Great Lakes. This hands-on learning opportunity is not only educational but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the natural world. In the future we hope to have a Salmon and Great Lakes Stewardship club at Ralya.
