Wiggin Street Parent Update
August 21, 2026
Welcome
Families,
What an amazing first week we’ve had!
We spent time building relationships with students and teaching expectations for positive behavior through our theme this year, “Be Brave. Be Kind. Be a HERO.”
Next week, we’ll continue celebrating this theme with our PBIS Kickoff on Friday! Kenyon athletes will be joining us to play with students on the playground and help us kick off a great year of positive choices, kindness, and school community.
Learning About Our Theme
Students have learned that being a HERO means Helping Everyone Respect Others. We are also continuing to reinforce an important part of what it means to be a Wiggin Street Kid: being Rooted in Respect. At Wiggin Street, we respect ourselves, others, and our space.
School Spirit
Don’t forget—our Spirit Wear Online Sale ends September 10th. Spirit wear is a fun way for students and families to show their Wiggin Street pride while supporting our school community.
Summer Reading
Summer Reading Logs were due today, but they will be accepted on Monday:)
We hope your children had as much fun as we did during this first week! Enjoy a few beginning-of-the-year pictures below. Thank you for your support and for helping make the start of our school year so special. We are excited for all that is ahead!
Sincerely,
Christy Grandstaff
Principal, Wiggin Street Elementary

Meet Laura Fowler, our Speech-Language Pathologist!
I'm Laura Fowler, your Speech-Language Pathologist for the 2026-27 school year! My family and I just moved to the Mount Vernon area and are so happy to be here! I live with my partner (Robert) and our Toddler (Eugene), along with our 4 cats and 2 dogs (Kira, Zemi, GrumpyCat, Bella, Shylah, and Freyja). I have been an SLP for almost a decade now, with experience in both the school and medical settings (pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations). I have definitely missed working with students and teachers! A fun fact about me is that I am a huge animal lover, having worked with cats and dogs my whole life, and I previously worked as the Shelter Manager for my local humane society. I have fostered many dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens over the years, and plan to do so again once my son is older.
I am very excited to be assigned to Wiggin Street Elementary and look forward to working with all of you!
Laura Fowler, MA, CCC-SLP

Parent BCI Background Check for Field Trips
We require that all adults attending field trips will need a BCI background check on file. The board will pay for any parent's background check done through the MVCSD district office to go on field trips or to volunteer at the school. The BCI background check will need to be done every 3 years and needs to be on file in our office. If any parent needs a background check, please go to the district office with your driver's license. Thank you.
Bus Information
Mount Vernon City Schools is introducing the Stopfinder app to help families receive important information about their child’s school transportation. You can connect to the app using this link:
https://www.mt-vernon.k12.oh.us/.../use-the-stopfinder...
If you have further questions, please contact the bus garage at 740-392-5995 ext. 6700.School Attendance
You can send a note with your child to the office in the morning if there is a change in their pick up routine. Sometimes changes are necessary during the school day for pick up. If you have a change in the way your child needs to go home, it is preferred that you send an email to your child's teacher and Alicia, our secretary, at ahiggins@mvcsd.us. Phone calls must be made to the office before 2:00 pm if needed, so the change can be communicated.
Chromebook Insurance: Sign up by October 16th!
Chromebooks
As a district we are 1:1 on Chromebooks, and students in grades 1-5 receive a touchscreen Chromebook to be used in class. K students regularly use iPads and/or Chromebooks that are assigned to students and kept in the classroom.
The MVCSD Student Electronic Device Handbook can also be found on the district website, but I've linked it here for convenience. Please read carefully to understand that "a Student Electronic Device or any of its accessories that are lost (whereabouts unknown) or damaged is the responsibility of the student and parent involved in the loss of property.
There is an option to purchase insurance on devices kept at school, and more information can be found here: OPT IN Student Electronic Device Insurance Flyer (These will be sent home at the start of the school year.) The cost is $39 per device (K-12). Accidents happen, so I highly encourage the purchase of insurance to save you from paying for the cost of a replacement screen or Chromebook with a replacement cost of $368-$455.
