Important Message from the Principal Important Message from the Principal

Safety First

I’m writing with an important safety reminder after an accident this past week and too many near-accidents. Our top priority is keeping every child, family member, and staff member safe during morning drop-offs and afterschool pick-ups. Please help by following these 3 simple rules:

1. Drive Slowly

  • Slower speeds give drivers more time to react and keep children/adults safe.
  • Please do not speed on our street.
  • Speed limit should be within 15 miles per hours during drop off and pick-up.

2. No U-Turns

  • U-turns are illegal on our street.
  • If you can still see Multnomah on your right while driving, do NOT MAKE A U-TURN.
  • U-turns create dangerous situations.
  • U-turns causes unnecessary traffic.

3. No Jaywalking

  • Do not cross in front of the main gate if you are parked across the street from the school.
  • The glare from the sun makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for drivers in the valet line to see you.
  • You are crossing where the valet line exit, which is very dangerous.
  • Walk your children down to the crosswalk at Multnomah and Indiana or down to the kindergarten gate area.
  • Let's model safe crossing for our students.

Leader in Me: Habit 1 Leader in Me: Habit 1

Habit 1, Be Proactive, means taking responsibility for our choices and actions. Instead of blaming others or waiting to be told what to do, children learn that they are in charge of their behavior and can make positive choices, even when things are challenging.

Ways Parents Can Support Habit 1 at Home:

  • Encourage responsibility: Help your child take ownership of their actions. For example, instead of saying “My teacher made me do it,” encourage them to say, “I chose to do it.”

  • Focus on what they can control: Talk with your child about things they can control (their words, attitude, effort) and things they cannot control (other people’s choices).

  • Use proactive language: Model phrases like “I can try again,” “I will do my best,” or “I can make a better choice next time.”

  • Offer choices: Giving children simple choices (homework first or reading first?) helps them feel empowered and responsible.

  • Praise proactive behavior: Notice and celebrate when your child shows responsibility, solves a problem, or stays calm in a tough situation.

By practicing Habit 1 at home, you are helping your child build confidence, independence, and leadership skills that will support them both in school and in life.

Unsatisfactory Notices Unsatisfactory Notices

User uploaded image

Teachers will be sending out unsatisfactory notices this week. Should your student be at risk of receiving a 1 or 2 score on their upcoming progress report due to any of the following reasons he/she/they will be receiving one.

  • Unsatisfactory progress towards meeting the expected learning targets

  • Unsatisfactory progress towards meeting the grade-level standards taught

Progress reports will be issued during the week of March 9 - March 13 during our second semester Parent Conferences.

This is only a midpoint warning notice. It is a good time to have conversations with your student and teacher about what work might be missing or what concepts he/she might need extra support in. It also allows students 5-6 weeks to work on improving his/her/their scores and content knowledge before a final score is awarded.

Please reach out if you have any clarifying questions.

Afterschool Intervention/Enrichment Afterschool Intervention/Enrichment

If you have signed up your child for any of our intervention or enrichment programs, please note that attendance is extremely important as there are only a limited number of days the teachers/students are meeting. It is never fun to play catch up, so let's help our students' success factor by ensuring their presence.

HAWKS! HAWKS!

During the Fall Festival you might have visited the HAWKS booth. Here is a message from Collette if you are interested in signing your child up. It is a program outside of Multnomah after school hours.

Message from Collette:

HAWKs (Hiking Adventures with Kids) is excited to launch at Multnomah for after school enrichment on Wednesays this semester! Using place-based education, our goal is to create community, forge connections with nature, and instill a sense of stewardship for our earth in our explorers and their families. After school we pick up the explorers in the musical Venture Van, journey to a new trailhead or park, then learn about ecology and nature through games, crafts, journaling, species identification, birding, indigenous stories, and hiking! Our outdoor classrooms include Griffith Park, Deukmejian Wilderness Area, JPL Riparian Area, Elysian Park, Brand Park, and more wonderful green spaces. At 5:45pm, we return the explorers to school for parent pick up. Join us for adventures this Spring! Multnomah After School Link

The Parent-School Compact has been approved by your elected SSC council and can be found here and on our school website. A School-Parent Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all our students reach or exceed grade-level standards.

Farewell Mr. Albert Farewell Mr. Albert

We have loved having Mr. Albert as our Plant Manager for the past nine years. Over the last couple of years, he has been making a daily 150-mile round trip drive just to work at Multnomah. It has been a long and taxing commute that has taken valuable time away from his young daughters.

Mr. Albert has recently accepted a position much closer to home and will be saying goodbye to us next week. His last day will be Friday the 23rd. If you're not going on a field trip that day (because you have to wear your field trip shirt), wear something Dodgers or blue to bid Mr. Albert farewell.

If you would like to help us celebrate and thank him, please consider sending a handwritten note from your child or a small contribution toward a school-wide gift basket. We would love to show our appreciation for all he has done for our community.

Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who worked tirelessly for fairness, justice, and equality for all people. Dr. King believed that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of the color of their skin.

We celebrate this day not only to remember Dr. King’s courage and leadership, but also to reflect on his message of kindness, peace, and standing up for what is right. He taught us that positive change can happen when people use their voices, work together, and treat others with compassion.

For children, this day is an opportunity to learn about empathy, inclusion, and helping others. It encourages students to think about how they can make a difference in their own communities—through kindness, fairness, and respect.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is also known as a Day of Service, reminding us that one of the best ways to honor Dr. King is by helping others and making our community a better place. So on Monday, January 19th, there will be no school in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
