Mary Hogan Family Newsletter

Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
October 6, 2023
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
The weather this week has been really warm, but a cold front is coming this week and fall is truly here. NBC 5's Weather Station's visit this morning really has me thinking about the change of seasons and how we keep track of them - with instruments and our senses. We also keep track with our foods and if you haven't had a local apple lately, you should try them. Delicious!
We do not have school on Monday, as we are observing Indigenous People's Day. On this day, I hope you all have an opportunity to think about the indigenous peoples who have lived in the land we call Vermont for over 12,000 years. We can become more knowledgeable and reflect on our history together with our children. Below you can check out resources to learn and celebrate the Abenaki together with your child.
Be well,
Jen

This Week at Mary Hogan
Early Literacy
Our youngest classes have been working on the foundational practices of reading, learning letters, sounds, rhyming, and more. Ask your child how to take apart and put together compound words like, treehouse, snowman, firefighter, etc. These words are made up of two separate words. Taking the compound words apart and putting them back together is an important reading skill! So is rhyming, so practice rhyming silly words around the house.
Leaf Hunt
Deb Martin's class was out exploring this week! They read a book called, Going on a Leaf Hunt, and decided to go on a leaf hunt too! They found a lot of different kinds and colors. What a perfect week for a leaf hunt.
Weather Station Visits Mary Hogan
This week, NBC 5's Mobile Weather Station visited Mary Hogan. We were on the live broadcast from 5-8am and then meteorologist Marissa Vigevani stayed around until 9.15am so different classes could come out and learn about the weather station as well as being a meteorologist. It was awesome to hear about the thermometers and cameras in two wheels, the 360 degree camera and the instruments that measured temperature, humidity, wind speed and more. The students were inquirers, asking lots of thoughtful questions.
Reading Together
We love reading together - read alouds, partner reading, and snuggling together in a cozy spot to read books. As talk with your child about what they are reading, also think about how you can read together - from a picture book to a manual for equipment. Even 5th graders need to be read to and chat about their reading on a regular basis. It takes a little time but the pay off is huge for the students in learning vocabulary and you can model your thinking for them as you read. Keep on reading, Hawks!

Family Resources & Opportunities
Learning about Indigenous People's Day
This is the first year we are not in school on Indigenous People's Day. We will be talking about the day at school, and you can talk with your child about it too. When you do, you are modeling how we are all reflective thinkers and inquirers. Here are some resources for you and your child about the Abenaki, who have been living in N'dakinna, the homeland of the Western Abenaki.
- What is Indigenous People's Day? - A WCAX story about the day
- Abenaki Alliance - An organization working to foster the collective voice of Abenaki communities
- Abenaki History for Kids - From the Historical Society of Cheshire County and Indigenous New Hampshire Collective Collaboration
- There are also a lot of great books by Joseph Bruchac and others at the Ilsley Library you can check out. I do love Malian's Song by Marge Bruchac (and they have this too!). I also have Night on the Living Rez on my night stand to read. You can find that at the Ilsley too.
From the Library - Info about Graphic Novels
Graphic novels are extremely popular in our library. They can be a ticket to an incredible reading adventure for kids of all ages! Graphic Novels combine words and pictures and they provide a great alternative for children who are reluctant to read traditional novels. They help readers build their confidence and develop essential reading skills. With their colorful visuals and engaging storylines, graphic novels can draw kids in and keep them hooked. They often help children develop positive attitudes toward reading and help them become lifelong readers!
