Message from Jennifer

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Coffee with the Principal & Counselor! It was wonderful to have such a great turnout and spend time connecting with our Sunset View families. We shared updates on the Sunset View Way, our fall assessments and how we use the results to monitor student progress, as well as some of the trends we are seeing across campus. Ms. McCormack also presented on the important topic of childhood anxiety, sharing signs families can look for and practical strategies to support children when they are experiencing feelings of anxiety. We appreciate everyone who took the time to join us, ask questions, and learn alongside us. We look forward to continuing these conversations and hope to see you at our next Coffee with the Principal & Counselor!

Hot Weather Protocol Hot Weather Protocol

I am implementing our hot weather protocol this week. Students will play inside during morning recess and play in the auditorium during lunch recess. PE classes will take place in the auditorium. Please ensure that your child has a refillable water bottle and dresses in layers as the air conditioning makes the classrooms cool, but it will be hot outside.

Counselor's Corner Counselor's Corner

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and at Sunset View, we are using this opportunity to focus on the importance of belonging. Every child deserves to feel seen, valued, included, and connected at school. Throughout the month, students will participate in activities that help them understand how their everyday choices can create a stronger sense of belonging for others.

Students will practice inviting someone to join a game or activity, noticing when someone may be feeling left out, using kind and inclusive language, identifying trusted adults they can go to for help, and role-playing ways to safely speak up when they see someone being treated unkindly. We will also encourage students to look for opportunities to learn something new about a classmate, give genuine compliments, and recognize the qualities that make each member of our Sunset View community unique.

Families can continue the conversation at home by asking, “What did you do today to help someone feel like they belong?” Small actions such as saving someone a seat, asking someone to play, saying hello, or standing up for a friend can make a big difference. Together, we can help ensure that every student knows there is a place for them at Sunset View.

SDUSD Updated Screen Time Policy

As we kick off the new school year, San Diego Unified is introducing a new learner-centered technology resolution to help students stay focused, healthy, and engaged in learning.

Beginning August 10, students will see a few important changes:

  • Video-streaming platforms, such as YouTube, will only be available on district-issued Chromebooks when enabled by teachers for instructional purposes.

  • Non-instructional gaming platforms will still be prohibited on district-issued devices.

  • Computer carts will be removed from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms, while ensuring students with Individualized Education Plans, 504 Plans, or language-learning needs continue to receive appropriate access.

These updates are part of our commitment to creating learning environments where technology supports student learning, safety, wellness, and healthy development.

As a parent, you can also reduce screentime and non-instructional use of Chromebooks by activating your Blocksi Parent account to monitor and restrict access when your student is not at school. To learn more about how to use Blocksi, read this Blocksi Parent Job Aid.

Playgrounds Closed Before and After School

Our playgrounds are closed to families before and after school each day. This is for the safety of all parties, as we do not have supervision nor support should accidents happen. It also allows our custodial staff to focus on getting the campus ready for the next school day and avoid extra clean-up. We appreciate your understanding!

Attendance

Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.

When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.

Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.

SDUSD Phone Free School Day Policy

The San Diego Unified Board of Education adopted the new Phone Free School Day Policy during the summer of 2025. This means cell phones and smart watches should be "Off and Away" during school hours. Students may not use their devices during school hours. This includes calls or texts home. Students may use classroom, main office, or health office phones for communication home. Parents can contact the school directly if you need to contact your child. Student cell phones must be turned off and stored in backpacks (not pockets). Smart watches may not be used as communication devices during the school day. Thank you for your partnership in enforcing this policy.

NO DOGS ALLOWED ON CAMPUS

Although we love your pets, they are not allowed on campus. Please do not bring pets past the school gates. Please see the district policy below.
