Article: Apollo 11

In the 1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union (a country that included present-day Russia and surrounding countries) competed to be the first to land on the moon. While Soviet engineers could not get their rocket to work, the United State National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully landed the first people on the moon.

Buzz Aldrin, Neil A. Armstrong, and Michael Collins flew on Apollo 11 to the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first person to step on the moon. He famously said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," during his first step on the moon. Buzz Aldrin joined him on the moon about 20 minutes later. Michael Collins did not step on the moon but stayed in space on the spaceship.

Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The most powerful rocket ever flown, a Saturn V, launched it to the moon. There were three parts to the Apollo 11 spaceship. They were the command module, the service module, and the lunar module. The spacecraft traveled to the moon in three days. Then, it went into orbit around the moon.

The lunar module landed on the surface on July 20. Armstrong and Aldrin explored the moon for more than two hours, doing scientific experiments and collecting samples. In order to land safely, the lunar module and service module were left in space. The command module landed on July 24 in the Pacific Ocean and was picked up by the U.S. Navy.

Fifth Grade Activity

Ada is excited about her ham radio hobby, and spends time learning as much as she can about it. She works to fix up the radio, getting advice from Nina, Mr. Peebles, other ham radio operators, and even astronaut Sandy. To solve the mystery of the alien sounds, she investigates radio signals and lets Mr. Peebles show her how to use a radio repeater. Choose a hobby or subject that you’re interested in but don’t yet know much about. Make a list of steps you’d take to learn more, and what you’re most excited about.
