Message from the Superintendent
We are very fortunate to be in a community that values education. For decades, families have sought out our strong Lake Oswego schools and embraced educational excellence.
This week I had the pleasure of attending the Renew Our Lake Oswego School Levy citizen campaign volunteer kickoff, a perfect example of the support our residents and families give to our schools. We could not do what we do without our volunteers. Thank you! If you are interested in getting involved, please email the campaign team at loschoolslevy2023@gmail.com.
You may have seen the recent post that LOSD has been recognized as the number one school district in Oregon. And, our teachers are also ranked number one! There is A LOT that goes into being a top-ranked district in the state and nation, including the resources funded by our levy. The levy funds 15% of our annual general operating budget. That’s equivalent to one-third of our classroom teachers.
That all leads me to the importance of renewing our Lake Oswego School Levy.
- This levy will protect educational excellence in Lake Oswego without increasing local taxes.
- Without it, the district could be forced to make cuts to critical educational programs.
- It could also lead to a shorter school year and class size increases.
- Putting our students at an educational disadvantage compared to other high-quality districts across the nation.
On behalf of the entire district, thank you again to all who are coming together to renew the Lake Oswego School Levy in the coming May 2023 election.
Our Schools Celebrating Black History
At Lakeridge Middle School, students in 8th-grade social studies classes recently experienced a "field trip" at school from the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. Founded by Dr. Khalid el-Hakim, the Black History 101 Mobile Museum is an award-winning collection of more than 10,000 original artifacts of Black memorabilia dating from the trans-Atlantic slave trade era to hip-hop culture. As the nation's premiere Black history traveling exhibit, the Black History 101 Mobile Museum has visited 41 states sharing "our story" at thousands of institutions reaching tens of thousands of visitors in diverse spaces including colleges, K12 schools, corporations, conferences, libraries, museums, festivals, religious institutions, and cultural events.
School Counseling Appreciation Week
National School Counseling Week is coming up Feb. 6-10, a time to focus attention on the invaluable contribution school counselors make in our schools. We are incredibly fortunate and very grateful to have such a wonderful team of counselors supporting each of our schools and working across our system. School counselors make a tremendous impact in caring for our students and helping them achieve success in school and in life. Their service is integral to being able to support the whole child, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Please join us in showing appreciation for your school counselor next week, and always.
LOSD Robotics Teams Heading to State Championship
After two very exciting and ambitious days at highly competitive tournaments, all three LOSD FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics teams are advancing to the Oregon State Championship.
Tobor Tech and All Hands on Tech finished in first place in their tournaments. In addition, all three teams were recognized for their respective strengths throughout the season. Mostly Operational received the 1st Place Innovate Award and 3rd Place Think Award. All Hands on Tech received the 1st Place Think Award. Tobor Tech received the 1st Place Connect Award and 3rd Place Inspire Award.
Team member recruitment for next season will begin this spring. Find more information by following the teams' Instagram accounts (below) and visiting https://lorobotics.org.
Elementary Standards-Based Report Card
With the end of the first semester, elementary report cards will be available in ParentVUE on Friday, Feb. 10. LOSD uses a standards-based report card for students in elementary schools. This report card measures a child’s progress toward proficiency or mastery of the priority standards in Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking, and Math.
For more information about your child’s progress, please contact the classroom teacher. To find more information about standards-based report card click here.
The Oregon State Seal of Bi/Multiliteracy
With our rising middle and high school students forecasting their classes for next school year, now is a good time to bring attention to The Oregon Seal of Biliteracy and The Oregon Seal of Multiliteracy. The Oregon State Seals are awarded to graduating seniors who have attained literacy in two or more languages (including their native language) by the time they graduate. Since 2018, 150 LOSD students have earned these awards.
Find more information about the Oregon State Seal of Bi/Multiliteracy in LOSD. Students are encouraged to contact their school counselor, test coordinator, or World Language teacher.
Starting the LMS Track and Field Project
The Lakeridge Middle School Track and Field project construction is scheduled to begin on February 20, with construction fencing going up on February 22. All three baseball/softball fields behind the tennis courts will not be available for sports or pedestrian use during construction. Construction is targeted to be completed by the fall of 2023.
Below is a site map indicating the area of construction in red and a site plan showing a blueprint of the area. LOSD appreciates your patience during construction. If there are any questions, please contact the Project Manager Daniel Camacho at 503-956- 8687 or email Daniel.Camacho@turntown.com.
