Welcome to 2026!

Greetings to the Wonderful NRESC Family!

2026 is off to a fast start, and January has already flown by! The NRESC is looking forward to a successful second half of the school year, and we thank every member of our family for all that you do—and for trusting us to provide services every day.

This month, we’re kicking off a Stranger Things–themed series of updates—inspired by how this year began for the Vancheri family, watching the series finale in a movie theater! As Bob Newby once wisely said, “You do what you have to do to protect the people you love,” and that teamwork and dedication are exactly what makes our community strong. We’re excited to bring a little of that adventurous, supportive energy to our updates this month.

Beyond my monthly updates, I encourage you to check out the monthly newsletters from the following NRESC departments and programs:

  • Childcare

  • Phoenix Center

  • Second Home

Not a Demogorgon in Sight: Pearl the Therapy Dog to the Rescue!

Pearl is on the move, bringing comfort and calm to JP Holland Charter School, North Haledon Public Schools, and Manchester Regional High School! As the NRESC’s therapy dog, she helps students feel supported and ready to learn. Don’t worry—these new friends are definitely not demogorgons. And just like Lucas stepping up with his slingshot to protect his friends, Pearl shows how a steady, caring presence can make all the difference in a student’s day.

Golfing Like a Hero: NRESC’s Annual Outing is Back

Mark your calendars for May 11! The NRESC Education Foundation’s 2nd Annual Golf Outing is coming, and you won’t want to miss it. Steve will be there to cheer everyone on—don’t worry, he’s leaving the nail-studded bat at home this time! And for those who’ve seen Eddie and Dustin swinging bats in the Upside Down, rest assured that precision and timing on the course might just come in handy. Get ready for a day of fun, friends, and a few “skills from another dimension” put to good use!

Channel Your Inner Eleven: Celebrate Those Who Stand Up for Others

Save the Date: November 12! The NRESC Education Foundation’s 2nd Annual Gala at The Grand will honor true heroes—veterans and those who have gone above and beyond to support them. Just like Eleven stepping up with courage and heart when it mattered most, these honorees have used their strength to protect and uplift others. Join us for an evening of gratitude, recognition, and inspiration!

No Stopping This Team: Paterson Project Moves Forward with Grit and Focus

Some of the most important work happens when persistence meets planning—when someone refuses to stop pushing for what matters while keeping the bigger picture in mind. The Paterson Day Habilitation Project is underway, with ongoing conversations with local, county, and state officials. Like Joyce, who never stops asking the hard questions, and Mike, who keeps the team focused and moving forward, this effort is about protecting opportunities, connecting the right people, and building something lasting. Stay tuned for what we have in store—we are excited to continue expanding post-21 options across the region and opening doors for our students’ next adventures.

Lights Flicker, Connection Locks In: Catch Me on the NJAEL Leader’s Podcast

Every now and then, the signal comes through loud and clear—no static, no interference, just the right message at the right moment. I was honored and humbled to be spotlighted on the NJAEL Leader’s Podcast, proving that when you tune the dial just right, good conversations find their way through. A huge shoutout to Rob Elia (and former Hillcrest Ball Club teammate!) for the invitation and for running the operation like a pro behind the mic. Much like a certain upbeat tune blasting through a trusted radio station, it was one of those moments where the lights flicker, the connection locks in, and you know you’re exactly on the right frequency.

Celebrating Those Who Champion Others: ERC Charities Honors Sharon Bertonaschi

Sometimes the best way to fight the unexpected is by showing up together and standing with those who have always stood with you. On January 29, the NRESC was happy to attend the ERC Charities 4th Annual Gala, supporting a group that has consistently championed our programs. We were especially thrilled to see Sharon Bertonaschi of Second Home honored as the 2026 scholarship fund recipient—proving that courage, dedication, and heart always get noticed, whether you’re navigating the Upside Down or the world of opportunity for our students.

When Staff Stand Together, Even the Upside Down Can’t Hold Them Back

Even in the Upside Down, no one succeeds alone. On January 30, Second Home and Phoenix staff gathered for a powerful professional development afternoon, learning more about Handle with Care training. Being together, sharing knowledge, and supporting one another makes our work stronger—and our schools safer.

Guardians of the Hallways: Honoring Our Officers’ Steady Presence

Every community needs its guardians—the steady presence that keeps the lights on and the doors secure while learning takes place. On January 9, Lakeside Day Care recognized Officer Appreciation Day, honoring the officers who stand watch, keep the Upside Down at bay, and protect our students each day. Like a certain small-town chief who leads with grit, heart, and quiet strength, our officers are always ready to step in—especially when the threats are real and the stakes are high. Whether it’s facing everyday challenges or standing between our students and a Vecna-sized problem, we are grateful for their unwavering commitment to keeping our school community safe.

From Mystery to Mastery: Students Learn the Power of Connections

Learning is an adventure when we connect the pieces—and sometimes those connections are what make all the difference. Ms. Ditroia, our amazing speech therapist at JP Holland Charter School, is teaching conjunctions using train cars—making grammar fun, visual, and easy to remember. Just like Nancy and Jonathan teaming up to solve a mystery, students are learning that when elements work together, even tricky challenges become manageable. All aboard for learning! 🚂

Noticing What Others Miss: MLK Day Inspires Connection and Respect

Seeing the world from a different perspective helps us understand one another better. Students in Ms. Tracy’s class celebrated diversity as they observed Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at The Phoenix, learning to appreciate each person’s unique story and strengths. Like someone with a special way of noticing what others sometimes miss, these lessons in empathy and inclusion remind us how powerful it is to stand together with understanding and respect.

From Housekeeping to Heroics: Participants Learn Life Skills with Persistence

Starting the year strong means building skills, routines, and confidence—one step at a time. Our participants are focusing on strengthening essential functional daily living skills through housekeeping and cleaning activities. January is a great time to set expectations, take pride in shared spaces, and practice planning, following steps, and working independently or as part of a team. Like Mr. Clark guiding Erica through a tricky challenge, participants are learning to approach tasks with curiosity, persistence, and teamwork—skills that carry over into everyday life and future goals.

Steve’s Babysitting Skills Meet Winnie the Pooh: Keeping the Celebration Safe and Smiling

Celebrations are always better when someone has your back—and maybe even keeps a watchful eye while the fun unfolds. The Lenox Learning Center is having a blast celebrating Winnie the Pooh’s 100th birthday. Like Steve using his signature babysitting skills to keep everyone safe and smiling, our students are enjoying the festivities while learning, laughing, and creating memories together.

No Mystery Creatures Here: Our New Fish Settle In Safely

New friends have arrived—and we’re excited to give them a safe, happy home! Second Home visited Petco to purchase our newest fish, and we can’t wait to watch them thrive in their new environment. Unlike Dustin, who once brought home a “mystery creature” that got a little out of hand, we’re making sure our fine friends stay healthy, happy, and very much under control.

Beat the Clock, Not the Hill: ESY & Fall Info Sheets Due Soon

Transportation updates are coming in fast—so don’t get caught “running up that hill,” just like Max would remind us. 2026–2027 student information sheets for ESY and the Fall are due April 17, and 2026–2027 non-public student information sheets are due March 20. Staying on beat with deadlines keeps everything moving smoothly—and ensures our students’ plans are on track.

Scouting Solutions in the Upside Down of EdTech

Another great year at TECHSPO! Brian Zinn, Director of Shared Technology Services, and Matthew Cielo, Site Administrator, explored the mix of forward-looking tech (hello, AI!) and practical, boots-on-the-ground strategies for supporting school districts. Delightful Derek sparked fresh ideas at every turn, and Heroic Holly tackled tough questions head-on—proving that teamwork and persistence make all the difference. Time with partners like SchoolFi, Frontline, and Finalsite—and scouting new vendors—keeps NRESC ahead of the curve, ready to bring back solutions that strengthen our districts today and tomorrow.
