Important Message From Mr. Bandy
January 28th, 2026
Hello VDM families,
I want to take a moment to talk about student safety, specifically regarding motorized scooters and the importance of wearing helmets. Yesterday, there was an accident in the park next to our school involving three Vista Del Mar students riding motorized scooters. While we are grateful that the students are receiving care, this serves as an important reminder for all of us.
In California, the law requires all riders under the age of 18 to wear a helmet when riding a motorized scooter. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious head injury and can truly save lives. Wearing a helmet is not optional—it is a legal and critical safety requirement.
We also want to remind students and families of basic scooter safety expectations:
-
Always wear a properly fitted helmet
-
Ride at safe speeds and stay alert
-
Be aware of pedestrians and surroundings
-
Follow all traffic and park rules
-
Never ride recklessly or perform stunts
We ask families to please talk with their students about scooter safety and to ensure that helmets are worn every time they ride—whether it’s to school, after school, or on weekends.
Our goal is to keep all students safe, healthy, and learning. Thank you for your partnership in reinforcing safe choices and helping prevent future accidents.
