Upcoming Events

Meet Ridwell: Tuesday, October 6 | 2:30 pm to 3:15 pm | Talley Media Center

During the 2025-2026 school year, Talley diverted an estimated 1,200 pounds of plastic film and 150 pounds of snack wrappers from our local landfill through our partnership with Ridwell. But what happens to all of that material once it is collected? All Talley families are invited to a special discussion with a member of Ridwell’s Community Team as part of our Green Team Guest Speaker Series. Learn about how Ridwell got started, what they’re doing to reduce waste and how they help community-based organizations in the cities they serve.'

Plastic Film for House Points: Thursday, October 8

The top three houses will earn 30, 20 and 10 points for bringing in the most plastic film.

Students display a “thank you” sign at the textile bin.

Clothing Recycling Has Arrived!

In case you’ve missed it, Talley now has a clothing recycling bin located on Talley Street, at the edge of the school near the playground. Donated items may be in any condition (new, gently used or with holes) and include clothes, socks, underwear, shoes, backpacks, purses and belts. All items should be clean and dry and placed in a securely tied bag before placing them in the bin. As an added bonus, the Talley Green Team will receive a donation for each pound of clothing recycled through the box, which will help cover the cost of Green Team supplies. Many thanks to the Talley PTO for making this happen!

Sustainability Impact Report

Talley continues to make great strides in our school's sustainability efforts. According to our latest report from CompostNow, Talley has diverted nearly 5,400 pounds of waste, avoiding 500 pounds of methane gas and nearly 14,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Twice this past week, our total garbage output from the cafeteria was one half-bag for the entire school day! During our most recent trip to CHaRM over the September break, we recycled more than 75 pounds of plastic (including 9 pounds of plastic utensils) and 15 pounds of aluminum.

We truly appreciate our students who volunteer to work the cafeteria recycling/composting stations during each lunch period, as well as the parent volunteers who help to clean up afterward. We also appreciate recent efforts by the City Schools of Decatur School Nutrition Program to reduce food and plastic waste. With the introduction of pan risers this week, Talley students can now serve themselves fruits and vegetables directly on their compostable trays.
