Staff Crystal Apple Award Winner

The staff Crystal Apple Award winner for the month of December was Mrs. Jergensen! Mrs. J. was nominated by her colleagues becuase she is one busy lady! She supports multiple classrooms and is always ready for a challenge. Mrs. J. anticipates the needs of students and her colleagues and works to help in any way that she can. Mrs. J. goes above and beyond each day and we are very lucky to have her as a member of the Phelps team. Congratulations Mrs. J.!

Student of the Month

Student of the Month is coming to Phelps! We want to keep acknowledging all of the AMAZING things that our students do every day. Each month, teachers will select one student in their classroom as the student of the month. The criteria is very broad and focuses on ALL aspects of student life - not just academics. At the beginning of February, we will recognize our January students. We CAN'T WAIT to see who our first 15 Student of the Month recipients are.

NetSmartz Presentation NetSmartz Presentation

Students in second and third grade attended a special assembly with representatives from the Hampden District Attorney's Office and Youth Advisory Board.

They gave a presentation titled “NetSmartz,” created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and incorporate local high school students - and some were even former Phelps students!!!

With more and more students at the elementary level using computers for school and entertainment - it is more important that we teach students how to use the internet safely.

Kids Healthy Heart Challenge

The American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge is coming to Phelps Elementary in February during PE Classes! Our goal is to have all students register online and complete Finn’s Mission. They’ll even earn a free wristband for registering!

Our event is the week of February 13-17 during PE class.

Here’s how you can register your student

  • Click to Register: Phelps Web Page

  • Complete Finn’s Mission: Watch a 2-minute video to know Hands-Only CPR, spot the signs of a stroke and more!

  • Share with friends and family through social media, text and/or email

February is Heart Health Month so along with the Kids Heart Challenge we will be learning about ways to keep our hearts healthy and strong.

Some of the topics your child will be learning about during PE classes are:

  • Cardiovascular endurance/strength

  • Eating Healthy

  • The 5 functions of the Heart

  • Other ways to help our bodies stay fit

We are setting a goal of $500 in donations to the American Heart Association and more than 50% of students to enroll in the challenge. If we reach this goal, our school will receive $500 in US Games gift certificates for physical education and recess equipment. DONATIONS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE.

If you have any questions about the event please do not hesitate to reach out.

If you have any questions or problems activating your account please email the IT department at support@agawamed.org.

R.T.I. Round 2

On January 3, students started their second round of our RTI block. Every day, students at Phelps have a 30 minute block where they work on targeted skills in small groups. Students work to develop their skills in reading, writing, math, and have enrichment opportunities. This round, most students in grades 3 and 4 are working on skills specific to taking the MCAS assessment later this spring.

Reminders from the Office

  • Please make sure that if your child is absent that you call the school. Please leave a voicemail under the attendance mailbox if we are unable to answer the phone.
  • We have noticed a number of parents parking across the street at dismissal. We ask that you please join the carline dismissal. School St. is very busy and there is no crosswalk or crossing guard to help keep students safe.
  • Changes in dismissal should be communicated to Mrs. DiLullo in the main office by phone or email as well as the classroom teacher. Please try to avoid changing dismissal plans after 2:30pm.

Tahini Chocolate Chip

  • 2 cups old fashioned rolled oats

Instructions

Chocolate Peanut Butter

  • Place oats, peanut butter, honey, protein powder and chocolate chips in a large bowl and stir to combine.

  • Getting the mixture to combine takes a little arm muscle and it may seem too thick at first, but it will come together as you keep mixing. I used my hands to knead the dough near the end and that seems to help.

  • Once combined, use a small cookie scoop to scoop and form the dough into balls.

  • Store in a covered container in the fridge or freezer.
