6th Grade Science
Art Inspired by Bacteria and Viruses
Microscopic Bacteria and Virus Art
5th & 6th Grades
Students in 5A, 5B, and 6th grades, observed and studied the various bacteria and virus microscopic images (in Petri dishes) & shared on The Getty Museum site, as our inspiration for these Watercolor paintings. Some students created their own virus and/or bacteria as well. This art was made in watercolor paints and in mixed media techniques, such as: wet on wet, wet on dry, salt on wet watercolors, blotting, wax-resist (crayon), colored pencils, ink, and drops of rubbing alcohol on top of wet paint, onto circle shaped paper.
Middle School Electives
Wednesdays in Middle School are all about exploring as the students get to choose electives.
Some of the electives offered are; House Council, Psychology and Mental Health, Yearbook, World of Wonder, National Geographic Geo Bee, Cryptozoology, Maker Space, Nature Exploration, Book vs. Movie, Math Lab, Into to Weight Training and Fitness, The Evolution of Popular Music: 1600's to Present, STEM to Story, Creative Writing Workshop, Behind the Headlines, Sports Around the World, Habitudes (Leaders in Training), Astronomy, Looking Back to the Future, Podcasting, Here We Come (8th Grade Look at Self, Education and Careers).
Wow! For more information about each offering, see the Spring Electives document below.
Ms. den Hartog sent this to middle school students this week:
"Middle school is a time to explore new areas of knowledge and find what you are passionate about. That is one of the reasons we like to offer a variety of electives for students to choose. We have a great list of exciting classes, and some new faces teaching those classes. Chaplain Aaron, Mrs. Natalie Bennett, Sr. Dominick, and Mr. Aaron Booker are all helping out and sharing their passion and expertise."

The Reading Corner with Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. Snyder
Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Winter Break and stayed safe and healthy.
The Markell Hall library book drop has been overflowing each morning! It is great to see how much the students read over break AND how responsible they are at returning their library books.
Did you know that the Franklin Academy libraries help support classroom learning? We frequently select books to display based on what is being taught in the classroom. This month, first graders will learn about the polar regions, so a variety of books on polar animals and polar regions have been made available for check out at the Robin Hall library. We often fulfill teacher requests for books to round out their collection during specific units—the second graders are learning about Martin Luther King Jr. this month and the Markell Hall library was able to provide several books for classroom use. This happens for middle school too! One of the joys of being a librarian is making these important cross-curricular connections!
Happy reading,
Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. Snyder

I was able to get a few photos, and if I missed your furry friend let me know and I will be happy to put them in the newsletter next week. There is also one or two cats who frequent the drop off. They are more elusive but I will attempt to catch a photo of the cats as well.
