Welcome to the BHS Express
A newsletter keeping you informed about Batavia High School
Hello Bulldog Families.
It was nice to finish our first full week of school and to begin to settle into routines! As the guidance office continues to make schedule shifts, our BHS students will soon settle for the first semester.
Batavia High School has some amazing parents, so if you would like to be a part of our BHS PTO, please take note of our first meeting for the 2025-2026 school year. We will meet at BHS in the Project Lab at 6:00 p.m. on September 24th. We currently have a parent who is serving as the treasurer, but we are looking for people to fill the roles of president, vice president and secretary. If you have any questions, please reach out to Melissa Reardon at reardon_m@bataviaschools.org.
As our students continue to adjust to the cell phone policy law instituted by the state, I’ve been reading a little from Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Anxious Generation, to reflect a little on why there is a push to have our teens put away their phones. In his book, Haidt raises many thought-provoking concepts concerning smartphones and our youth. He notes that, “Between 2010 and 2015, the social lives of American teens moved largely onto smartphones with continuous access to social media, online video games, and other internet-based activities. This Great Rewiring of Childhood is the single largest reason for the tidal wave of adolescent mental illness that began in the early 2010s.”
While we know that many factors may contribute to mental illness in our youth, any parent can attest to the backlash from their teens when their phone is lost or even taken away as a punishment. It does cause us to stop and question a bit about why, to a teen, losing the phone is like losing an arm! As I plan to continue my reading and reflection around this topic, I will share a little with all of you throughout the next few weeks.
We hope you have an enjoyable weekend as the weather forecast seems to be more pleasant.
In service to our Bulldogs.

Hi, Bulldog Families.
I wanted to share with you some of the updates that Ohio law has made in regards to attendance and truancy guidelines. Ohio has removed the definitions of medically excused absences and excessive absences. They have replaced this with chronically absent.
A chronically absent student is defined as a student who attends less than 90% of school during the school year. To clarify, any excused absences, including medical, are still counted against a student in terms of the chronically absent percentage.
It is crucial that we have all the necessary documentation when your child is absent because the law also defines a habitually truant student as a student who has 72 or more hours unexcused. Any student who exceeds 72 hours unexcused may be referred to Clermont County Juvenile Court.
Please make sure you contact the school when your child is going to be out. Families will receive attendance letters throughout the year when a student is not meeting attendance requirements.
If you have any questions about attendance, please reach out to me at buis_m@bataviaschools.org, and I will be happy to assist.
Have a great weekend.

Hello families,
We’ve had a great first full week of school with students. It’s nice to see all of them settling back into their school routines.
This week, I will begin tracking tardies to school making sure they are in 1st period on time. Once students reach a third or fourth tardy to school, arriving after 7:25am, I will be reminding them of the consequences that will occur when they reach their 5th tardy.
Lastly, if you are dropping off your students in the morning, please pull up through the dropoff area through the crosswalk before stopping. Our goal is to get as many students dropping off in that area to prevent a back up onto Old SR 32. Also, please do not park in the staff/student parking lot next to the school because these spots are needed for seniors and teachers.
Thank you, and have a nice weekend.
Joe Moorehead, Dean of Students

Graduate Services Senior Cap/Gown Information (Students attending Live, Diamond and Scarlet Oaks)
All high school drop offs are to enter from Old SR 32 and stay on the main route, Bulldog Place. Pull through the cross walk and up to the designated pole to drop off students. Students will not be permitted to enter the building until 7:05 a.m. If families are dropping off both a high school and middle school student, you may drop off both students in front of the high school and the middle school students will be safely crossed by a staff member. Aftertoon pick ups may park in the parking lot between the high school crosswalk and the board office at 4 Bulldog. Families will be able to exit the lot near the board office and turn right onto the main Bulldog Place main route.
