Why Students Research Falls Apart Before It Starts

Strong research does not begin with searching. It begins with questioning.

One of the most common challenges librarians and educators see is that students jump straight to Google or an AI tool without clarity about what they are actually trying to learn. When questions are vague, search results are unfocused. When questions are unclear, sources feel overwhelming. When questions are poorly framed, AI tools amplify the problem by returning broad responses that sound confident but lack relevance. This week focuses on one of the most powerful research skills we can teach students: how to ask better research questions.

What Is Gender Inequality?

Gender equality is the principle that everyone—regardless of gender—is entitled to equal treatment under the law, equal rights, and equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from their societies. The Women’s March in 2017 was one of the largest single-day protests in history: over seven million demonstrators took part in over seven hundred marches worldwide. This article from CFR Education discusses how gender-based discrimination harms countries around the world and how governments and international bodies are combating it.

Choking Smog. A River on Fire. How Pollution Set the Stage for the First Earth Day | Retro Report

Earth Day, born in 1970 from public outrage over pollution, marked a turning point in U.S. environmental policy. In the mid 20th century, smog choked cities, factories spewed industrial waste and a river in Ohio caught fire. By the late 1960s, a series of environmental crises pushed environmental damage into the national spotlight. This Retro Report video and lesson traces how those events led to the creation of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.
