Greetings
Thank You, St. Cecilia School Community
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the St. Cecilia school community for your generous donation, which allowed us to provide gift cards to families in need within our school.
Your kindness and compassion truly embody faith in action—the very essence of what Jesus calls us to do: to love and care for one another.
Your generosity has made a meaningful difference in the lives of those who needed it most.
May God bless you

Student Pick Up and Drop Off Reminders
As we begin the new year and start to think of increased sunshine ahead, we would like to remind all members of our community of pick up and drop routines and expectations.
- Supervision in the morning begins at 8:30. As such, please make arrangements for childcare if you need to drop your child off at school before 8:30 AM. Summit offers before and after school care if needed. Summit can be reached by email at st.cecilia@summitkidsyyc.ca or by phone at 403 477 1327. Please note the Summit flyer in the attachment below which details pricing and services.
- The ideal place to drop students off is on the east side of the school opposite the main entrance. There is enough parking on that side and on the south end of the school for students to make their way to the entrance in the fence on the east side of the school. The school bus zone is not an ideal spot to stop your vehicle.
- Please do not park in the staff parking lot as our staff parking lot is already full and some staff members must park on the street.
- A men's watch was turned into the office. If you recently lost a watch, please let us know.

Alberta School Council Grant - Input Requested
Each year the Alberta Government provides a 500.00 grant to through ASCA (Alberta School Council Association). This grant can be pooled with other schools or can be used on its own to engage parents on relevant educational matters. For example, our school council may plan an evening presentation with a speaker or an expert to provide information to parents.
Our school council is asking for your input on what type of speaker we should seek. We ask that all parents complete the survey at the link below to share your preferences on a speaker. The survey will take less than a minute to complete and will help to narrow the topics to facilitate planning an engaging event for our families.

Progress Reports and Parent Teacher Conferences
Teachers and school staff have been working on progress reports and they will be issued electronically on Jan 23, 2025. Well Being
Hello families,
The "winter blues" refers to a temporary dip in mood or energy levels that many people experience during the colder, darker months of the year. It's often characterized by feelings of sadness, fatigue, and a lack of motivation. This is different from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a more severe form of depression that follows a seasonal pattern and can significantly impact daily functioning.
The winter blues are usually mild and can be managed with lifestyle changes such as getting more sunlight, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy diet. If you find that your symptoms are more severe or persistent, it might be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional.
Have you ever noticed any specific symptoms or changes in your mood or your child's mood during the winter months?

Faith Formation
January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. Check out Symbols of our Faith on page 2 to learn about the Holy Name of Jesus, sometimes abbreviated by the letters IHS.
Although Christmas has come and gone, we are still in the Christmas season, which concludes with the celebration of the Baptism of Jesus. In our first week back, we have the opportunity to celebrate the Epiphany with our school communities.
When we are once again with our students, our Church will have begun the Year of Jubilee with the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”. Page 1 includes the opening message of hope from the Papal Bull that begins the Jubilee. Let us be inspired by the opening phrase “Hope does not disappoint”!

School Improvement Plans
Each year Alberta schools are required to analyze data and make plans for continual school improvement. Our school plan flows from the School District plan and is framed around District Priorities which are; Faith Formation, Student Success, Well Being and Indigenous Education. Our school plan is housed on our school website at this link: Reports & Publications - St. Cecilia School.
Over the coming weeks I will include snippets of data from our AEM report and Student Voice Survey in this newsletter. Ongoing discussion, analysis will occur at the school level as the school year continues to unfold.

Each year, students in grades 4-5-6 are asked to complete the Student Voice Survey. The SVS collects data on the District Board Priorities and students are asked a variety of questions.

Enrollment in A Catholic School for Non-Catholics
The Education Act requires the Calgary Catholic School District to prioritize resources and facilities for resident (Catholic) students. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the advancement of a non-resident (non-Catholic) student from one grade to the next in the same school or from elementary to junior and senior high school.
We do not reassess the enrollment priority of a non-resident student during a school year, but we may do this for a future school year. This may result in us informing you to seek enrollment at a different school in the Calgary Catholic School District or another school division for a future school year.
Please contact me at denis.fortier@cssd.ab.ca or by phone at 403 500 2063, if you have any questions about your child’s enrollment priority.
