Math (Mrs Gillette) Math (Mrs Gillette)

Wow! It is November! We have moved on to our second unit Solve Percent Problems. The unit starts off with percent change and continues with tax, tips and markups, discounts, commission and fees and interest. This unit helps students understand concepts that are prevalent in daily life and future financial decisions. We are building on the understanding of fractions and decimals that students learn in earlier grades. Next time you are out to dinner ask your mathematician to calculate the tip! They can do it!!!

Our next unit will be Operations with Integers (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of positive and negative numbers)

If your child is struggling, Khan Academy has some great resources for any students who are struggling! https://www.khanacademy.org/

Science (Dr Petrucelli) Science (Dr Petrucelli)

Hello from Science class!

We are ending our unit on Contact Forces with an upcoming test on free-body diagrams, mathematical models, and system models to explain the effects of relative forces, mass, speed, and energy in collisions. By the start of November, students will begin studying thermal energy by exploring how their favorite drinks from Dunkin’ or Starbucks can help us kick off our learning in this new unit.

Science Reminders:

  1. Students should always have a pencil or pen and bring to class

  2. Students should have a personal pencil sharpener for Science class.

  3. Students should have their own personal supply of colored pencils or markers for our Science models and drawings.

Social Studies (Ms Plummer) Social Studies (Ms Plummer)

In Social Studies class, we are diving into the ancient civilizations of South Asia to try to understand how different belief systems and leaders influenced people’s lives. We explored the origins and essential beliefs of Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions. We studied the Mauryan Empire of India and asked larger questions about government, like “What makes a good ruler?” Before Thanksgiving break, we will conclude our Unit 1 study of South Asia by looking at the contributions of common people in creating the Gupta Empire’s success.

English (Mr Mansfield) English (Mr Mansfield)

Throughout November and the beginning of December, students will be reviewing the elements of a narrative through different short stories and videos. Once students have grasped the material as readers, they will begin to craft their own narrative. Since our essential question for Unit I was “When do differences become conflicts?”, students will focus their narrative on a conflict that can realistically exist in a middle school setting. With rules and expectations in place to narrow their focus, students will get to flex their creative muscles and come up with their own sets of characters, conflicts, and resolutions.

Reminders

-Check PowerSchool regularly and always feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

English and Math (Miss O'Brien) English and Math (Miss O'Brien)

In math we are working on our unit on Percents. This unit includes:

2-1 Percent Change

2-2 Tax

2-3 Tips and Markups

2-4 Discounts

2-5 Interest

2-6 Commission and Fees

Unit 3 will be about operations with integers. We are continuing to review our basic math facts and problem solving skills. Students work online in Khan Academy, First in Math, and Prodigy. Khan Academy is free and an excellent resource for homework help.

In ELA, unit 1 is all about conflict. We are reading and listening to short stories and excerpts such as Seventh Grade by Gary Soto, The Wise Old Woman by Yoshiko Uchida, and The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling. We are working on skills like finding themes, character traits, and summarizing. Students also work online in iReady and Prodigy.

Reminder- students should have their own wired headphones/earbuds and a calculator.

During the month of October, students engaged in writing short stories to enhance their main idea identification, summarizing abilities, and listening comprehension skills. Their efforts have demonstrated significant growth in both understanding and application of these concepts. As we move into November, instruction will focus on problem-solving and inferencing skills, along with the development of well-structured introduction paragraphs that incorporate content-specific vocabulary. We look forward to continued progress and success in these areas.
