Principal's Pen May 19, 2023

Dear Parents,

We are moving at a fast rate at school and enjoying lots of fun and educational activities.

We held the Julian Curtiss Spring Concert Wednesday evening that included many of our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in orchestra, band and chorus. It was a beautiful evening of music! Thank you to our dedicated music staff, Ms. Holly Brown, Ms. Melanie Champion and Ms. Giulia Sanford.

On Tuesday the Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works (DPW) and Greenwich Police Department teamed up to host a pedestrian and bicycle safety presentation for Greenwich public school students in grades 3-5. This 45 minute presentation offered live safety demonstrations (ex. proper bike helmet usage, bicycle showcase, crossing the street safely) and provided students with important safety tools and information needed when walking or bicycling. Since May is National Bicycle Safety Month and the weather is getting nicer – this was the ideal time for a presentation to educate and empower students on how to best navigate the road as walker or biker.

On Friday, School Resource Officer Christopher Wallace presented on the topic of cybersecurity to our fourth and fifth graders. The students were presented with and discussed topics such as

keeping your personal information private; avoiding sharing your name, address, telephone number, birthday, passwords, and the name of your school when using the Internet.

The students were urged to think twice before posting or saying anything online; once it is in cyberspace, it's out there forever! There was discussion about cyberbullying and digital citizenship. Our students were engaged, asked questions and shared ideas.

Student in grades 3-5 have finished taking the Smarter Balance Assessments this week (https://smarterbalanced.org). There are a few students that need makeups due to absences but the largest number of students have completed their tests.

We are looking forward to enjoying the last four weeks of the 2022-2023 school year!

Sincerely,

Trish McGuire and Matthew Hartigan
