Class Meeting Class Meeting

Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Morrissey held a short class meeting last week. We wanted to celebrate the completion of the first month of sixth grade! We shared with them that we are VERY PROUD of the "small things" that they accomplish every single day, like homework completion, following the dress code, and actively engaging in class!

Then, we set a goal class for October: to transition more seamlessly from class to class. We reviewed how they should use transitional times of the day and what being prepared looks like. In the two days since the meeting, students have not been leaving classes to get materials, and they are preparing books before socializing. We will continue to remind them of this small opportunity to "level up" as a student!

Field Trip Field Trip

On Wednesday, October 16th, the Sixth Grade class will travel to Newlin Grist Mill in Glen Mills. At Newlin Grist Mill, students will rotate through three activities:

1. a service project

2. a nature walk

3. a tour of the 1704 Grist Mill.

Students must wear their gym uniforms, and they must pack a bagged lunch.

Mrs. Condello will be sending invoices by FACTS and permission form links by Option C to the entire grade.

Winter Uniforms - October 8th Winter Uniforms - October 8th

Winter Uniforms start on Tuesday, October 8th! If you need a reminder of what we expect our students to wear, please check the parent/student handbook.

Halloween Halloween

As Halloween is approaching, please remind your child to be inclusive. Group costumes can isolate other students. All students should be welcome to participate in a group costume, if they choose.

If you have any books at home that you are ready to pass along, please send them in with your student. I am specifically looking for middle grades books. We will sort through the books when they arrive, and we will make sure that they are appropriate for our library (or pass them off as needed).

Last week, we built background knowledge for Freak the Mighty by reading a nonfiction text, entitled “Morquio Syndrome.” The article generated a fruitful discussion in both classes. Ask them about it! After completing our first vocabulary stations of the year, students offered feedback about how to improve stations throughout the year! Student voice and choice are key to a successful classroom! They will see many of these suggestions implemented during our next vocabulary unit. Students reviewed figurative language through the completion of a digital escape room.

This week, we will continue our study of “Just Once” and story elements, so I have postponed the test. Stay tuned for a new date! Students will build more background knowledge for Freak the Mighty through an independent station activity, and they will take the Wordly Wise Lesson 1 Test on Wednesday, 10/9. All students have notecards, Wordly Wise books, and various materials on Google Classroom to use for studying. In class, we discussed the format of the test (I also posted it on Google Classroom for reference). In writing, we will transition into using mentor sentences to guide our study of grammar. Our first topic is independent and dependent clauses. We are also diving into narrative writing, which is the star of the first trimester. Students will utilize various mentor texts, including Freak the Mighty, to write several short narrative pieces.

They handled a busy week very well! On, Friday they completed a lab using the same skills and had fun.
