NC Cyber January 2026 Newsletter
February 2, 2026
Hello Owls!
The North Carolina Cyber Academy was excited to welcome everyone back for the start of the spring 2026 semester back on January 6!
Together, we've worked through the bitter cold and we've now reached the end of January. We're just a little over three months away from winding down the 2025-2026 school year!
We appreciate everyone's dedication to our new "CAMERAS ON" policy at the High School! We believe our students will be the beneficiaries of more in-person interactions with their teachers and classmates!
Thanks to everyone for their hard work, and we wish everyone a happy February! Please stay warm and safe throughout these cold winter weeks until spring finally arrives!
NC Charter Schools Review Board renews NC Cyber Academy charter through 2030-31
On the afternoon of Monday, January 12, 2026, the North Carolina Charter Schools Review Board renewed the charter of the North Carolina Cyber Academy. NC Cyber’s charter was renewed from the conclusion of the 2025-26 school year for an additional five years, through the conclusion of the 2030-2031 school year.
“The North Carolina Cyber Academy is pleased and grateful for the Charter School Review Board’s vote to renew our charter for an additional five years,” said NC Cyber Academy Superintendent Martez Hill. “We would like to thank the thousands of parents across the state of North Carolina who have entrusted us with the educational needs of their children, and we are ever mindful of the great responsibility we have to the citizens of this state.”
The North Carolina Cyber Academy is currently working with more than 2,000 students from all over the state of North Carolina. Over the past decade, NC Cyber has supported the educational needs of North Carolina families in all 100 counties through our virtual curriculum.
“We are making progress as a school, and as we look to the future, we are going to continue to make progress. Over the past decade, more than 1,000 students have received high school diplomas from the North Carolina Cyber Academy, and we are looking forward to honoring more than 200 students again this coming May in our Class of 2026.”
NC Cyber currently boasts the highest enrollment of students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses of any charter school in North Carolina, and has been recognized for its commitment to North Carolina’s military community through the Purple Star program.
“The North Carolina Cyber Academy has the largest CTE (Career and Technical Education) program of any charter school - virtual or brick-and-mortar - in the entire state of North Carolina, and for the past several years we have been recognized as a Purple Star School for our commitment to assisting military families and their unique needs,” said Mr. Hill. “Over the next five years, thanks to the Charter School Review Board’s vote, we look forward to working with many more families and helping their children on to graduation and the next phase of their lives beyond school.”
NC Cyber Family Takes Memorable Trip to Africa
One of our families at the North Carolina Cyber Academy – the Riggsbee family – recently shared some pictures from their family's time in Kenya. Seventh grader Lillian Riggsbee and third grader Penelope Riggsbee, along with their parents Thomas and Rebecca Riggbee, had an amazing cultural experience that was life changing in so many ways. Here were Mrs, Riggbee’s thoughts about this incredible experience!
“We visited two different tribal communities and spent time with the elders and children who attend the Integrated Child Development Centers in those communities. These centers are operated by Africa Exchange,” she said. “They build the classrooms for children to attend preschool. They provide nutrient rich porridge for lunch each day. They focus on malaria prevention and deworm the children, and they also provide clean drinking water and educate about the importance of hand washing and personal hygiene.”
“We planted trees in the communities and the girls did beadwork with the tribal ladies. We went on safari to experience the wildlife in the Masai Mara,” Mrs. Riggsbee added. “It was a really cool trip for Penelope and Lillian to be a part of. Thank you to NCCA and to each of you for supporting our family to be able to go.”
Special thanks to the Riggsbee family for sharing these inspirational photos from their incredible journey!

Elementary School Shout Outs
Kiley Mullis (3rd Grade)
Kiley Mullis, a third grader in our NCCA Elementary School. won runner-up in the Elite Young division in the recent Miss Merry Christmas pageant. Kiley and her older sister Kinsley, who won the Preteen Miss Merry Christmas title, have been outstanding students at NC Cyber, as both have been listed on the A Honor Roll throughout their whole school careers.
The Miss Merry Christmas title brought together a large number of people for a wonderful cause. All the contestants had to bring toys that were donated to the City of Monroe for children for Christmas. All of the money raised at the door went to buy bracelets for Operation Save!
We salute Kinsley and Kiley for their achievements, and for thinking of others during the Christmas season through their generosity!
Matthew Lewis (4th Grade)
Matthew Lewis, a fourth grader in Mrs Minor’s homeroom, recently got new headphones for his North Carolina Cyber Academy laptop. He also recently learned how to fix hot coco! Matthew loves his collection of Pokemon cards!

NC Cyber Academy High School
What's New in 2026?
Starting with the spring 2026 semester, the North Carolina Cyber Academy High School has instituted a CAMERAS ON policy for live classes. Students are now required to turn on their cameras during live instruction time. Please reach out to your teachers and/or principals with any questions related to this new policy!
Numerous studies have indicated that students who engage in their virtual learning with their cameras on achieve higher test scores and report overall higher satisfaction in their educational experience!
Let's turn those cameras on and seek excellence in 2026 and beyond!
Changes to NC Cyber's "Full Flex" Policy for Spring 2026
In addition to our "Cameras On" policy for spring 2026, there has been a change to our Full Flexibility policy starting in the spring 2026 semester at the NC Cyber High School.
In the past, students needed to achieve a grade of 80 in a class to take advantage of Full Flexibility. The new policy requires students to be on a traditional educational path until they achieve a grade of 85, at which time they can take advantage of Full Flexibility.
Please reach out to your teachers and/or principals with any questions!
Charter School Teacher of the Year Finalist Colt Weaver Discusses Recognition
The North Carolina Cyber Academy is so very proud of our 2026 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Charter School Teacher of the Year Finalist Colt Weaver.
Mr. Weaver, the reigning NC Cyber Academy Teacher of the Year, provided us with his thoughts about his unique achievement. Congratulations Mr. Weaver!
On my bookshelf is a high school yearbook. My high school yearbook. It’s dark green with the cartoonish image of a cowboy taming a mustang–our mascot was the cowboys. If you were to grab that yearbook, flip to the back pages, and look for my name, you would only see one number next to it. I wasn’t in any sports team pictures, wasn’t in any club pictures, and wasn’t known enough to be interviewed or to be spotlighted by our student yearbook team. And honestly, at the time, I would’ve been mortified and terribly embarrassed to stand out in any way. As a student, I had all but given up on schooling. One teacher changed all of that.
My junior English teacher showed me what was possible through education and through school. In literature courses, we often use Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s analogy of mirrors and windows which can be paraphrased as such: Literature allows us to observe ourselves in a mirror and see our own values, faults, and stories. Literature also allows us the unique experience of looking through a window into someone else’s life. It allows us to live inside the circumstances, struggles, and achievements of others. My 11th grade teacher built a house of windows, and that is what I try to do for our students each day.
I am incredibly honored to have been named one of the two 2026 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Charter School Teacher of the Year Finalists. This recognition is a celebration of all of the work, all of the improvement, and all of the great things happening at NC Cyber Academy. It would not be possible without the tremendous support from my colleagues, our students, and their families, something for which I am eternally grateful. For me, engaged community has always been the heartbeat of teaching and learning–this honor affirms that belief even further. With our emphasis on data analysis, intentional planning, and strategic intervention, we have been able to lift our proficiency in English above the state average and compete with some of the best high schools in the state. Ultimately, this honor is not about me or my personal achievements but stands as a testament to how far we have grown as a school and the banner we carry for virtual schools across the state.
Being involved with the entire process of selection–from being voted as our High School Teacher of the Year, to being named our NC Cyber District Teacher of the Year, to advancing in the NC Teacher of the Year selection has provided me with the opportunity to reflect on my practices and my growth as an educator. I have been able to step back and realize how we were able to achieve this success and much of it has to do with the specific opportunities provided by NC Cyber. This school has given me the space to grow as a teacher-leader, as a classroom instructor, and as a person. At NC Cyber, I have been able to engage in and present professional development, and I have been able to hone my craft and knowledge of teaching in a way that had not been possible in traditional settings for the previous decade. Much of this is due to the community of ambitious, hard-working teachers and the excited, eager students who call us home.
Most importantly, what this recognition means to me is that we are leading the way and paving the path for ways virtual public schools can serve NC’s students and families. In my years at NC Cyber, we have gone from having one of the smallest CTE programs to having the largest CTE program of any charter school in the state, we have increased our club offerings and student leadership opportunities, we have offered dozens and dozens of in-person field trip opportunities, we have vastly increased our connections and conferences with parents & families, and we have improved the lives of our students. It is my hope that this honor brings attention to all of the extraordinary work happening here at NC Cyber and that every student at this school can feel connected and inspired.
I am grateful for the opportunity the Burroughs Wellcome Fund has provided me and their continued commitment to acknowledging the great public educators across the state, and I am so proud to be part of the story of NC Cyber.
NC Cyber High School Students Honored for Poetry, Senior Portfolio Work
The North Carolina Cyber Academy is proud to honor two of our High School students - 10th grader Mallory Johnson and 12th grader Siniya Martin - who were recently honored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in its annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!
Mallory Johnson received the 2026 Silver Key recognition for her poetry, titled, “The American Dream.”
“Mallory is our first student to win a Silver Key for writing. This is a very distinguished award, representing her strength as a writer,” said Mrs. Lisa Ragland, an English teacher at the NC Cyber High School.
Siniya Martin earned the 2026 Honorable Mention award for her Senior Portfolio, which included an assorted range of her written works. Siniya impressed the judges both with her talent and her versatility as a writer.
“Siniya is a senior and our first to enter a full portfolio, which requires her to send 6 works, representing a variety of writing styles,” Mrs. Ragland stated. “Both of these students can write in numerous creative genres and have had Creative Writing 1 with me at NCCA. :) Mallory is also a self-published author!”
Congratulations to Mallory and Siniya for this outstanding accomplishment!
