What I Discovered While Getting My Makeup Done In A So-Called "Smart Mirror"

Tom Ford most certainly does not do anything in a half-hearted manner. Beyoncé, Julianne Moore, and Lauren Hutton walked the runway for his first women's fashion show in six years in 2010. The show took place in 2010. For YSL's now-famous campaign for Opium, he styled a photo shoot featuring a naked Sophie Dahl. His first feature film as a director, "A Single Man," received positive reviews from critics all over the world when it was released. When you are invited to have a makeover at his new Covent Garden beauty outpost, you know that you will not be subjected to sitting under some harsh strip lights and having contour daubed on while Radio 1 plays tinnily in the background. Instead, you will be treated to a more luxurious experience.

In point of fact, you are guided below the main floor of the shop to an incredibly luxurious lounge that is adorned with velvet furniture and oversized bottles of his signature fragrances. The only sound that can be heard is his gentle bass profundo intoning over the speakers while he discusses his influences. It was almost as if Mufasa himself had materialised out of the clouds to speak to Simba. At one end, there is a fully functional men's barber chair for wet shave appointments. In the middle, there is a dedicated fragrance lounge. However, the makeup lounge is where the real magic happens. The mirrors, which give the impression of being unassuming, are equipped with a technology called Memomi. This means that they are able to record your entire makeover as it is being performed and then email you a video that has been expertly edited for you to analyse in the comfort of your own home.

I'm sure that I'm not the only person who's had their makeup done by a professional, been blown away by the bright colours that were chosen and the benefit of having a new pair of eyes, vowed to try it at home, and then found themselves at a loss when it came time to get ready to go out. We frequently revert to our tried-and-true routines because we are afraid of making a mistake, forgetting what products were used or how they were used, or both. This leaves little room for experimentation because there is so little room for error. Memomi and Tom Ford have teamed up in the hopes of putting an end to all of that by providing you with a one-of-a-kind beauty vlog that stars you and is crafted specifically for your requirements.

My artist puts me finally in the driver's seat and guides me through the process. Would it be more convenient if we started filming after I had applied foundation? She explains that there are some ladies who would rather not go without makeup, even for themselves. However, I've spent the last 24 years getting used to how my face looks without makeup, so you can go ahead and tell her to get started right away. When it is in filming mode, the mirror has a couple of touchscreen buttons that make me think of an iPad. My artist taps these buttons to stop and start the recording so that she can ask me if I think the foundation shade is correct or if I want more concealer. It also divides the film into sections, such as "base," "contour," "eyes," "lips," and "blush," and provides the artist with the ability to edit out sections in the event that you change your mind about a particular tone.

Before moving on to the eyes, my makeup artist pauses the recording and navigates to a different page containing a list of products. She selects everything she's used (which will form a regime, which will also be emailed), and then we move on to the eyes. As we work, I look into the camera as we apply an essence, a primer, an eye cream, foundation, and concealer. She wants to use a shadow called "Infrared," which is a bright orange colour. I'm nervous about it, but she calms my fears by applying it sparingly to the centre of my lids. I was prepared to graciously put up with it, but in all honesty, I find that I really enjoy it. The same thing goes for eyeliner; typically, I like to use a dark brown pencil, but she convinces me to use black instead, and she's right; it doesn't appear to be too harsh.

As my confidence grew, I gave her free reign over my contour and blush, two areas in which I normally keep the application very light. But once more, I'm taken aback by how pleasantly surprised I am – the sophisticated textures melt onto my skin so beautifully, without leaving any muddiness behind.

It's hilarious to watch the video once you get back to your house. To start, there is no music present. It's just that I'm used to hearing some jaunty ukulele playing in the background of beauty videos. I'm not saying that it would add much value. In addition to that, the majority of it is just my own face looking down at me from above. After I've gotten over the fact that it's basically like watching surveillance footage of yourself for the first time (is this how it feels to be a Kardashian? ), I've noticed a few things about the situation. When it comes to my base, I almost always use a combination of my fingers and a Beautyblender, but the brush that she's using produces a wonderfully natural look. I pay close attention to the positioning and blending of that splash of colour, and then I boldly dab my brush into the brights of my palette that have not yet been used. Orange looks amazing on my eyes, which is something I never would have guessed, and black is a better colour for me to wear in the evening. She is right about both of those things. Also, I've always been interested in trying Tom Ford's best-selling Shade & Illuminate Contour Duo, but I've been put off by the fact that it has a creamy consistency. Now I am able to gauge exactly how much to apply and how deftly to buff it so that it has the greatest possible effect.

Even though I have a decent amount of experience with makeup, I think the service would be beneficial for anyone who is interested in improving their skills. This enables you to have a professional in your pocket, ready to show you the ropes whenever you want to watch, whether it's a no-makeup-makeup look, a daytime smoky eye, or just a general overhaul. Whatever you want to master, whether it's a no-makeup-makeup look, a daytime smoky eye, or just a general overhaul. It's the closest thing you can get to having your very own glam squad.
