The Principal's Perspective
Sept 8-12, 2025
π£ Families! We are in SAFE SEPTEMBER!
Nichols is a small community, but it is a community nonetheless- of bright minds and futures. Every one of us, whether we are a parent, a teacher, an administrator, or a student, shares in the responsibility for each other's success and well-being. The foundation of a strong and successful school year is a true partnership between our school and our homes. When we share the same positive messaging and reinforce the same expectations, we create a powerful and consistent environment for our scholars to thrive and grow. I am so excited that we have such a great foundational partnership between home and school- it is one of the things that makes Nichols great!
In our effort to be preventative and proactive, when we notice that some parts of our community may not be as safe as we desire them to be, we address them immediately, as do you, as their caregiver when they are at home. While it may not always seem "fair," sometimes we must institute different rules or routines to keep everyone safe and learning. Much like the new district Tech Protocol was made to keep students safe and focused on learning. These decisions are always made with the well-being of our students at the forefront. When we are a united front, we can help our children navigate these changes with confidence and resilience. It is this unity that builds the character and strength they will need for their futures.
These first two weeks of school have been nothing short of exciting. The growth we have seen in our students is remarkable. We have watched every student become far more comfortable and confident than they were on the first day. They are all finding their way, braver and stronger with every step, and with every challenge they overcome. Even with new protocols and procedures, they have been on top of their game! I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together so far, and I am particularly proud of my Nichols Lions! Let's continue to work as a team and build a school year that is filled with learning, growth, and shared success.
Parking Lot Safety Alert
The majority of our students walk, or ride their bikes or scooters to school. We also have a number of staff members who walk to Nichols from the train station as well. It is incredibly important that the adults who drive consider the safety of all children and adults on our sidewalks, road and parking lot. I have noticed a number of drivers entering the parking lot to drop of children. This is a gentle reminder that no one should be entering the parking lot to drop off students- this is incredibly dangerous. Additionally, please be mindful, that if you must drop students off on the opposite side of the road. as they cross, remind them to look both ways before they do. Also, if you are driving please look out for students walking across the street. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Community Alert
Community Alert: Email Scam
We have been made aware of a fraudulent email being sent to some families using a school leaderβs name from a fake email address.
Please know that our staff will never directly solicit families for gift cards, money, or other personal favors. All official communication will come from a District 65 email address. The Technology Services team is aware of this issue, but they are unable to block these emails as they do not originate from our system.
If you receive one of these emails, please do not respond. Instead, please report. Thank you for your support and vigilance in keeping our community safe from scams. Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.
Climate Club
Nichols Climate Club needs your help! Our beautiful pollinator gardens are in need of weeding. We will have a work day on Sunday, September 14th from 9 am to noon. Gardening gloves and any weeding tools are helpful but not required--just bring yourselves! All are welcome--caregivers, siblings, and of course Nichols students, too. This is a great way to meet other Nichols families and help make our school more beautiful and sustainable. Contact Ms. Sorock at sorocka@district65.net with any questions.

This week students continued to work on lessons from the ratios and proportions unit. They also completed their iReady Diagnostic test. We will review results with students next week, as well as set goals for the next time they take the diagnostic.

This week, we dove into Gary Soto's "Seventh Grade", practicing annotations and summarizing. Remember that STAR testing is next Tuesday!
Science:
This week, 7th grade scientists have been exploring the phenomenon of bath bombs. We observed a store bought bath bomb to see how it reacted when placed in water. We also observed 4 different samples of homemade bath bombs. We modeled our observations and will investigate these bath bombs more next week.
